There's a saying in business called "the quick and the dead". Nokia was too slow to react. But don't say they didn't have the resources to produce a valid touch screen smart device. They were stubborn and sat on their hands too long.
The Quick and the Dead is an English phrase originating in the Christian Bible and popularized by the Apostles' Creed, one of the earliest statements of faith in the Christian religion and still one of the most widely used in worship. It's since mainly known from Western movies, not business.

Bad Apple, baaad. You should be ashamed.

Finland just needs to lower their taxes, cancel half their social programs and they will bounce back quickly.

Tomāto / tomäto, same dif. The saying applies regardless.

Nokia, like Microsoft, stood still when both the iPhone and iPad were released.

That is not Apple's problem; as far as I'm concerned, companies of their size and experience should have known better.
Exactly! Resting on their laurels. In fact, how about invent something original to stay ahead of the game instead of keeping up by imitation? There's only room for so many Samsungs in the marketplace.

imagine...

that Nokia would introduce first smart phone. Unfortunately every nokia telephone was complete .... that icon is missing. :p

Thank you! That makes two of us who actually bothered clicking the link and listening to the Finnish PM deliver his comments. He was clearly jabbing Finnish industry.

Yep, that is quite obvious.

Always fun to see people being way off by just grabbing the tabloid headlines as a truth though :D

Nokia had huge brand loyalty which they threw in the rubbish bin by becoming a Windows Phone outfit.

They should have ditched Symbian sooner and really gone for Maemo - the N900 and N9 were decent and they should have slugged it out. The N9 showed how someone other than Apple could do a 'slick' mobile OS. Even now Jolla (which will, sadly, probably ultimately fail) gives a frustrating 'what might have been' for one-time Nokia fans.

Starting to sound like blackberry. Didn't innovate and died.

Oh they innovated like hell. But they didn't market the innovations with any conviction. They ditched the N9 in a hurry because it embarrassed Windows Phone, which they'd just adopted.

I suspect this goes a lot deeper than just Nokia / Apple....

For example:

Suunto. I do a fair bit of diving, and bought my first Suunto dive computer back in 1991. At the time it felt like something out of the space shuttle. Fast forward to 2014, and the Suunto dive computer has hardly changed. Now brand new ones look like the sort of thing you've had for years and they're being outcompeted by small start up companies. Surprisingly quickly they've gone from being an expensive 'must have' to a somewhat unappealing budget / starter choice.

Polar: Recently bought a Polar heart rate monitor (again having had one years ago) - have been surprised at how little they've changed too. If anything I think I preferred my previous 1990's one!

It appears the Finns are complaining Nokia has managed its business to emphasize licensing, a capital asset, rather than manufacturing, a labor intensive old world industry.

Perhaps they should onshore their manufacturing as a response? Lower the minimum wage for Nokia in particular?

Rocketman

No way Apple is to blame for their woes. Just today I received an email from Citibank exhorting me to go paperless. Same for all other business or non-profit entities that frequently bill or inform. Even emails from business contacts contains phrase as to please do not print this email.

Worst article I've seen on here. Pure click bait. There wasn't blame, he was just talking about the reality. This site is going down the toilet lately.

that however dosent excuse that lack of reading prior to replying to the thread

you from finland or have you been studying finland and its economics particularly?

Your reply adds nothing to the discussion. Headline is click bait. Commentary is click bait.

someone is touchy.

all i was saying is that people should take the time to read before commenting and realize that world is not anti apple.

but i am interested in seeing how a post critizing a poor headline and article is worthwhile and adds something while one that criticize a posts for not reading is not.
