So this would imply that the new iPod touch would be released at or after firmware 2.1 and before the next version.

Anyone have an estimated release date of 2.1?

I'm thinking that the new iPods could come before the new notebooks.

Well, no release date on 2.1, but background notifications are in it, and that was promised by....

September (Dun dun dun... <scary music>)

I could definitely see camera and GPS (since tons of the apps use the two) but bluetooth? What purpose would that serve on an iPod Touch?

i think the only iphone featuers youd may see is a mic "that be perfect for college kids who want to take notes etc" maybe bluetooth but i wont get my hopes on that i think the mic is more a possiblty

Dave

PS

A larger screen coupled with a state of the art GPS system would sell like hot cakes to the boating crowd if the software comes on line to make it viable there. More so if Apple where to come up with a version that is optimized for the environment. Maybe a rough duty model.

Dave

Apple and AT&T better get the current GPS figured out right first. My iPhone keeps showing me in Houston Texas.

I really can't see where they'd go with this. Camera and GPS are possibilities; but I don't see them adding them really. 3G Data would just be absolutely no go. Can't see them doing that at all. Maybe Apple really does have something up its sleeve.

Thinner maybe? But if it gets more thinner, I'd worry it'd snap. PLEASE get rid of the chrome backing. It's so easy to scratch, and it looks tacky these days I think. Plus, then you'd get rid of that silly black antenna patch. Major plus :)

Yeah, don't see much potential, but maybe Apple will surprise us all :)

I am interested in seeing what they will have to add to it, I do not see them adding features like GPS or Bluetooth because they would probably interfere with the sales of the iPhone somewhat. The only feature that I see them adding that wouldn't hurt the iPhone as much as others would be an external speaker. This would be great for apps like Super Monkey Ball that have sound, but don't have sound that would make me need to have my headphones. Otherwise, the changes that I see are maybe a slight redesign in it's looks, and maybe them dropping the 8GB model, pricing the 16GB model at $299 and the 32GB model at $399. I do not however see them adding a 64GB model at this time, maybe that more like around Macworld or in February.

It's hard to imagine they'll add much more to the Touch than the iPhone has, since it would fragment their development platform.

So bluetooth, gps, camera, microphone all seem like possibilities.

arn

If they add everything from the 3G, minus the phone (so BT, GPS, cam, mic, as you say) I'd sell my touch and get a new one, even if it meant going down to 8gb (from the current 16gb I have). Tethering a touch to my Palm Centro with unlimited data for $30/month (Sprint) would be better than an iPhone (cheaper, and two batteries - one in the phone and one in the iPod).

I doubt they will do that though. At best it'll be one feature - a camera, or BT (if Apple is planning to use the BT for something other than headsets and could monetize the addition through accessories sales)... but it would be great if it was all of them.

I hope to see...

  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • Camera
  • Speakers

This is now getting me excited! September can't come fast enough.
I'll sell my iPod Touch on eBay for this new one.

iPod2,1 suggests to me that it will be a whole new iPod, and not just a features upgrade (considering that the move from iPhone 1 to iPhone 3G only changes the second digit).

Could this be signalling the Mac tablet that's been rumored for so long?

No Bluetooth. Don't need it for phone, so they're not gonna add it for anything else.

GPS would be cool, but how will it download the Google Maps when you are outside without WiFi?

You buy a mapping program with maps stored locally from the app store for $49.99. You can get the entire US into a gig or two if I recall. Would be better than using an online map, imo, since it would be faster and available all the time.

...Could this be signalling the Mac tablet that's been rumored for so long?
I would think not, I would think that if Apple were to follow through with this Mac tablet, then they would not advertise it as an iPod touch or any iPod of the sort, they would probably advertise it as a computer, not an iPod.

The problem lays in the fact that no matter what you do to the product you can't ever make it outshine the iPhone. And price wise, it can't compete, you have AT&T subsidizing the price of the iPhone, the iPod touch even without the cell-phone radio is only ever going to be the same price or more then the iPhone.

There are a lot of people who wouldn't mind paying a little extra to get an iPhone without the pesky phone contract. I already have a cell phone through Verizon and am happy with my Razr. I also love my iPod touch and wouldn't trade it for an iPhone if I had the choice.

I think Apple should diverge the iPhone and iPod touch lines otherwise the touch will always be the bastard child of the iPhone. I'd like to see it more focused on being the new Newton for Apple. GPS might be nice since you can't triangulate with cell towers. But forget the camera. Bluetooth would be nice to sync without those pesky cords. But lets see some iPod only features. Come on Apple, let's see some more innovation.

The one thing I want to see them do is get the iPod touch OS stable and crash-free. Though it is better than the 1.0 version, Safari still bombs on me a lot as do a number of apps. Also faster processors would be welcome.

I imagine so; and if it had all iPhone features minus the phone part Apple would have to take a large cut off the cost for the buyer. Think of an iPod Touch that cost more than an iPhone because of the iPhone subsidy. As if we already ***** and moan enough.

No Bluetooth. Don't need it for phone, so they're not gonna add it for anything else.

Well, here's how I see it. The iPhone now nets Apple a fixed up front sale - they get $199 from you and some other amount, rumored at $300, from ATT - rather than a monthly payment from ATT like they used to get. I they make a new iPod with BT, cam, GPS, etc (basically an iPhone minus the phone) it would cost about the same, but be a little cheaper (no phone parts). Selling it for $449, say, would earn Apple the same amount.

Now, to get back to what you're talking about, BT would be useful to tether your cell to your iPod and if the two options (iPhone or iPod touch) earned the same amount for Apple, I can't see them caring which one you buy.

Really think about it guys if the 3G iPhone only ranks a 1,2 then this has to be an entirely new device, something that is likely to supplement the IPod Touch not replace it. My money is on a larger screen model that solves some of the demands that people have when it comes to viewing multimedia.

The bigger issues is this, is there any references to a 1,2 Touch? I just don't think it is the end of the line yet for the current Touch. If nothing else we might see a revision to lower costs on Touch but that is about it.
Didn't the MacBook Pro go 3,1 -> 4,1? So a first-digit change is a small update, while a second-digit change is a bigger revamp?

Somebody please clue me in on this.

Could this be signalling the Mac tablet that's been rumored for so long?
More like the rumored mini-tablet running iPhone OS.

Wow the rumors will not end this week. GPS on a touch would be so nice!
I thought I'd never say this, but...

TOO MANY RUMORS!!

:eek::p:D

Camera would be nice if it was a GOOD one. Better than the iPhone. Maybe this is a new product, the Mac touch... 4.5-5.5" multitouch screen, wifi, BT, GPS, 4mp cam w/ video, flash, optical zoom, 32mb flash, optional 3G data via add on card card, maybe some ports for docking or using other inputs/devices.

I think the iPod touch is near perfection (it's taken me a while to get to love it, as I was so used to the scroll wheel), but with the App Store it's just amazing (the games alone...well it is the games alone for me, I have no need for any other type of app ;) )
I have two minor suggestions:

1)On all other iPods pressing Menu takes you back one step. On the iPod touch pressing Home brings you alllllllllll the way back. Usually the cancel button to bring you back one step is kind of small, and I still keep instinctively hitting Home to go back one step. The option to change this or maybe by default have Home go back one step and holding it a second longer goes back all the way would be nice.

2) A volume rocker.

Finally a question as this may already be possible. I have an 8 GB iPod touch, which I have synced to my playlists. But I have lots of room left for more music. But I can't find the autofill feature to fill the rest with music from my library and I can't drag additional albums on without turning the albums into playlists unless I turn on manually manage music, but from what I understand if I turn on manually manage music I will disable syncing of my playlists correct?

If there isn't a way to do that, they should add that as my third suggested feature for the new iPod touch.

I thought these prefixes i.e 'iPod1,15A347.ipsw' stood for a firmware using 1.1.X as a base?

And therefore, iPod2,2 would mean Apple have switched from the 1.1.X base to 2.0.X?

Just a thought.

I'm surprised here Arn that you don't have a more optimistic attitude toward Touch based devices. Especially considering that Apple only has what amounts to one model at the moment. With one sweep of the hand Jobs could give the go ahead that would effectively whip out half the GPS manufactures out there. All the need to do is to implement a number of models from portable to stationary that offer up more than the conventional GPS system used by navigators. Long term they may have to address the multitasking issues but I see the current limitations as only minor delay to a more robust Mobile OS/X.

Now that paragraph was about navigation how about any number of specialized industries. In many ways Apple Touch based devices already exceed what is available to the utility industries. All Apple needs to do to grab a large segment of that business is to wrap a Touch based device into a package that is rugged and has a really big battery and maybe a few options suitable to field use. Here I'm thinking utility workers, hospital workers and others that travel a long way from their normal work stations if they even have one. That would be for devices with the current feature sets of WiFi and cell networking.

Now imagine what Apple could do if it came up with a Touch based device with a solid expansion port. The could conceivably take on the likes of Fluke, Agilent and the like when it comes to portable instrumentation. Imagine a multimeter with a Touch based user interface and a gorgeous high resolution screen. If they where smart they would have already started work on the correct types of partnerships to get the work done.

I could go on an on here and frankly I'm not even sure Apple grasps the potential here. But every time I look at my 3G I see huge potential for the right sort of apps. Many times those apps require alternative hardware too. The point is Apple has unlimited opportunity to take Touch based device in multiple directions.

More frustrating is that the current iPhone still has a lot of untapped potential already. The biggest boner here being the lack of a fully implemented BlueTooth stack. BlueTooth in and of its self offers up many possibilities with respect to interfacing to hardware. Everything from bar code readers to automation controllers.

Frankly I wish Apple was moving a little faster here.

Good news!

This is great news since I'm wanting to buy one soon. Comet have the 32GB model for only £309 with V2 software. I was wanting to go for the iPhone3G but no PAYG option in the UK yet. Plus the specs do not meet my needs. New iPod Touch means that I can stick with my trusty old K800i for now.

Oh and by the way Apple, if you are going to introduce a 2MP camera to the Ipod T, don't bother. It's simply not worth it. Can't see it happening anyway.
