Im guessing it will add/subtract features to differentiate it from the iphone, which is surely cannibalizing some sales of the ipod touch at the lower price point. Although I'm sure Apple doesn't mind cannibalizing one of their products with another, it makes sense to try to push the two devices in slightly different directions...

it has to be iPod1,2, hasnt it?

nevertheless, gps would be useless most of the time without stored maps on the ipod and so google maps must be changed.
i also didnt think there will be a mic nor bluetooth. adding a real bluetooth for pairing with other devices than a headset would make that thing better than the one in the iphone and we all know that apple will never let it happen that an ipod is being better than the iphone ;)

i think camera and speakers are possible, but i never needed a camera on my ipod touch

GPS would be cool, but how will it download the Google Maps when you are outside without WiFi?

You DO realize that GPS doesn't require Google maps in order to function... right?

I think having regular, good old GPS in an iPod touch is a good idea. Think about it, if you can detach your car's GPS (which most are no bigger than an iPod Touch anyway) and walk around with it, why not make the feature available?

Mic is a high probability, I think, even across all iPod lines. Wasn't there something about Apple wanting to beef up its Pod-cast functionality and user base?

Blue Tooth is a maybe. I really don't see a purpose for this at this time.

Camera is iffy at best, I think. Its one thing to include a camera in a phone, as its expected nowadays, but for a device thats primarily a media player? Maybe not so much.

personally, i'd love a newer version. im planning on selling mine (for the new ones price of course)) to dad and getting me a new one, when one comes out.

here's a bit of speculation: last night, when my ipod was having its daily (if not bi-daily) 2.0-freakout/crash, it displayed the volume pop-up. [the one the iphone has when you hit the side buttons] i wonder if they accidently added it in preparation for a newer version with physical buttons?

here's hoping!

Come on external speakers!

What a gaming machine the iPod touch will become, with external speakers :D

Microphone
Camera
GPS
Bluetooth
Speaker

I would like at least two of those features to be included but the more the better. I really think they need to add the mic and camera first. GPS would be great but it doesn't really matter very much until there is an application available to take advantage of it. Bluetooth would be nice to connect a Bluetooth headset for a microphone if they don't include one. I'd like the speaker because I'd like to hear some sounds without always plugging in my headphones.

GPS & 64 GB wanted on iPod Touch

I would love to see GPS added to the iPod Touch and a 64 GB size. I have been holding off getting a portable GPS unit for my car in the hopes that one of the new iPods might have them. I can't afford to pay the high subscription prices for the iPhone cell & data plansh. An iPod with wifi, web browser, email access & regular GPS would be great!

Dave are your serious here.

I could definitely see camera and GPS (since tons of the apps use the two) but bluetooth? What purpose would that serve on an iPod Touch?

Bluetooth offers up a number of possibilities some already common. Please check the list below:

  1. The ability to listen to music via Bluetooth stereo head sets.
  2. The ability to establish two way comunications via BlueTooth headsests with mics.
  3. The ability to interface to a number of Bluetooth serial devices such as GPS.
  4. File Transfers.
  5. Human I/O devices such as keyboards and mice. yeah yeah I know about Touch and how handy it is but sometimes a keyboard would really be nice.
  6. Any of the large number of "profiles" that Bluetooth supports. Frankly I forget how many profiles now exist but there is more than a few. The point is that current implementations of BlueTooth in iPhone is extremely limited and thus limits the sort of hardware the iPhne can hook up to.
  7. Ad Hoc communications with other iPhones and Touch devices.

Notably this is a quick list thrown together in 5 minutes time. BlueTooth should be looked at as the modern alternative to the serial port. The more devices that support it the more hardware we will see making use of it. It really can be a good thing.

Wouldn't it be great if they did introduce bluetooth? Then with the iphone 2.1 software enable bluetooth music/video syncing??!?! I can dream, can't I?

A new iPod Touch may be an option for me.

I would prefer an iPhone, but I'm holding off due to Rogers.

Either way, keep the new stuff rollin.......

Same position here, although I can't get the iPhone 3G at a sub-sized price until November, at which point data plans will sky rocket again.

With everything happen to Canadian Cell Providers and the government, I'm probably go to play it safe, get a new iPod Touch with GPS (and hopefully a camera, that's all I ask) and wait for the iPhone next year when I can get it at a lower price and hopefully the data plans will be reasonable by then.

Finally - iPod touch rumors

So bluetooth, gps, camera, microphone all seem like possibilities.

An iPhone doesn't appear to be in my near future at this point, so I've been keeping an eye out for iPod touch updates. If it includes GPS, that would be the clincher for me, since that was the killer feature on the iPhone 3G that sold me...except AT&T wouldn't sell one to me (*grumble, grumble*).

A camera would also be nice. Wouldn't care too much about BlueTooth, but I can imagine some people might want BlueTooth headphones.

So, if they can raise the amount of flash space to 64GB, lower the price on some of the other models, and add GPS, I'd be very, very happy with that. And adding a camera would just be icing on the cake.

Maybe this one will TRULY be an iPhone without the phone part. Have the exact same dimensions, and use the same cases, but no phone part. Bluetooth, GPS, camera, WiFi - everything else is there.

They can use the area that was the phone chips for added storage (64 Gig?).

how about they cover the whole thing in black aluminium the same as the nano but with no nasty back:) just a thought then they could have them in differnt colours and make it cost the same as the iPhone :)

Multiple colored plastic backs, similar to Nano colors.

The iPhone is the serious, phone part of the iPhone family. Pick Black or White and get down to business.

But iPods have always been about fun and kids and music and exciting colors. If they want the touch to become more popular than the nano (and why wouldn't they?) they to start offering them in multiple colors.

Plus, it will help differentiate the iPods from the iPhones.

Interesting point =)

Other possibilities are a touchscreen iPod nano or a hard-drive based iPod touch...

Frankly, I'd like to see a camera, speakers, volume rocker, and microphone on the iPod touch and the ability to record video and audio, not just take still pictures.

Damn you Apple, you're making it harder and harder to resist buying one of these things! ;) I still don't really need one, but if this next update is indeed going to be more than just a capacity increase I'm going to have to do some more thinking...

Microphone
Camera
GPS
Bluetooth

If Apple are looking to grow the Touch into a pure offline PDA version of the iPhone, then Bluetooth and a decent external speaker are essentials. GPS would be gravy. They'd easily be able to keep the price stable with the current model with those features, paving the way for a memory bump in Feb of next year.

If I could brainwash El Jobso to do something utterly out of character, I'd convince him to:

Partner up with Amazon/Sprint and put a EVDO card in it. Access could be free/very cheap .... say with a mobileme subscription (subsidized by Amazon/Sprint of course). To avoid atrophying iPhone sales, still no audio support (but that's fixable). This keeps AT&T and Apple's other worldwide partners off their backs re: their exclusivity deals.

Nonetheless, it would also give Apple limited presence in the the EVDO/CDMAAmerican market (anybody else besides Sprint & Veizon?), not to mention China and other markets.

Call me naive, but I think Bezos could be convinced to do this, and think it would make a few dollars for both companies. Depends on how in love he is with the Kindle hardware vs the potential to sell a silly amount of stuff.

can't wait

Yeah it's definitely coming in October/2 weeks after the B2S promotion ends.

The promotion, refurbished ones are up on the Apple store -- I can't wait to get me one of these.

And GPS? With just Wi-Fi? I find that very unlikely.

I don't really understand, I mean it's not perfect but what else do you do to the iPod touch. I mean, get rid of the lame back peice and what. Do you add GPS? I don't think it's really something you need in the device. Maybe a camera?

Once it has GPS, it is the perfect carrier for GPS software from TomTom or some other company. These companies would love it. Mostly because people wouldn't buy their software once only, but they would actually _buy_ upgrades with new road maps every year because it would go through the iTunes store and customers would _know_ that the upgrade will work.
