I think Apple has deliberately removed the generic AirPrint proxy from OS X to prevent that lazy printer manufactures get away with just letting their users use the proxy. Now printer manufacturers are forced (hopefully) to add AirPrint support to their printers and users will be happy. Proxyless printing is the only viable way to achieve standalone iDevice usage. Else we'd be forever needing a powered-on PC or Mac in the network to be able to print from iOS.

Yeah more it says FU to the manufactures add they are not going to bother with it. Printers generally out live computers so this is forcing people to buy new printers which they are not going to do. Big time if they have a older Laser printer.

Apple system is nothing more than what I could call a fancy generic driver.

Buy a new printer because of an iPad that won't print directly? Huh? What about printing the document in the regular way?

My Officejet Pro 8500 is barely 4 months old (I'm sure it's been around longer than that), but I paid a premium for it. You would think functionality would be easily added since it supports wifi printing.

So, does AirPrint requrie Wi-Fi internet? Or can you print stuff directly from your iPad without Wi-Fi?

Can anyone recommend to me a great printer to get, regardless of its native AirPrint support? One that has non-outrageous ink refill prices.

mmm ... You can print to connected printers ...

it's a total bust except for the :apple: fanboys

I paid less than 10 bucks for printopia and I can print to my connected printers. Who knows why apple pulled it, but it works really well. On the other hand, for me, the point of the ipad is to not have to be printing as much ...

Printing Pcitures

Curious what does everyone use to print pictures? Do you have two printers? A laserjet printer for printing pages & an inkjet printer for pictures? Or do you print from some online company? My inkjet died months ago and trying to decide what to do.

Gotta love the sense of entitlement here. This is the part where I wish Apple would go away and leave the complainers to a world of Microsoft and companies that can't innovate since there's no one to follow anymore.
The iPad wasn't advertised to print from the get go, it was a feature offered in the latest iOS update that didn't cost anyone one red cent, yet the usuals are stomping their feet like Apple owes them something.
If Apple can't do it for you, go get one of the competitor's tablets. Oh wait, they don't do much of anything, until Apple does it first. :p

I don't really want that many printed photos, so I use an online service. It's not that expensive and it's a lot less hassle.

I have a LaserJet printer for anything else.

Anyone know what the cheapest AirPrint printer is?

Yes.... Try "Printopia". For $10 any printer can be an AirPrint printer.

I think some folks decided to finally purchase an iPad because of the AirPrint feature which was originally advertised to print to shared printers on Mac or PC. Those folks who made their purchase based off the announcement from Steve Jobs on iOS 4.2 have every right to feel a bit cheated. Everybody else can be disappointed that Apple did not hold to their word, but they don't have any grounds for whining.

Technically, the original press release from Apple said "Available First on HP ePrint Printers" as a sub-title to the press release. So Apple probably feels they are still within the bounds of their announcement even if it was a little vague. It could just be that there is a defined period of exclusivity that Apple was not entirely forthcoming about.

Your iPad needs WiFi to connect to the network so it can print. The printer need not have WiFi from what I understand, but needs to be on the same network or shared out using Printopia.

I have a Canon 7-color multifunction printer at home. I use it print 8 1/2 x 11" samples from time to time. Anything I want to frame and/or sell I have printed by Adorama. I have had several 20 x 30" prints produced by them. Their service is outstanding.

Generally I don't print non-photo pages at home so it isn't a big deal for me. The occasional recipe or map doesn't eat up much ink. I'm actually impressed at how long the ink tanks last. In the office it is another matter but we have lots of lasers around the building.

Here's hoping the rollout continues. Whatever Apple's reasons for withdrawing full support at launch (I'm suspecting litigation/patent issues) if the roll outs continue then it's a good thing. Be nice to see Epson and Canon start to provide some supported printers and firmware updates soon...

This would would make my day. But untill then I will keep using the little program I purchased, which has been working without a hitch since day one!

Hmm. So Microsoft aren't to be followed? Yet here you are in the Blu-ray thread yesterday...

Drinking the Kool-aid?? I don't think so. Microsoft even agreed with Apple that BR is a dying platform.

So what if they did? According to the top post we shouldn't listen to MS as they lack innovation. But if they happen to agree with you (and Apple), then it's time to swallow your pride and perform a drastic U-turn.

Printopia... $10 + the printer you already have! (sorry, big fan)

Airport Hacktivator...$0 + the printer you already have!

AirPrintHacktivator (if I remember the name correctly) works fine with my Brother MFC-465CN which is plugged into my router and shared from my iMac.

I find HP printers to be unreliable. (YMMV)

I don't have any experience with Brother printers, but my family's Laserjet 6MP is the oldest piece of electronics in the house. 13 years old and works flawlessly. I've had an HP 1022 for about 5 and it's been great. Works with Airprint via Airport Hacktivator.

It's been my experience that all inkjets (at least HP and Epson) suck.

Can someone explain to me what Airprint supposedly does that HP iPrint free app (by HP) cant do? I can already print to older HP printers, like my Photosmart C6280 and I dont need a mac to be switched on or shared.

I just hit print and it wirelessly prints, like magic...

I agree. ONLY SUCKERS buy inkjets. And we have LOTS OF THEM.

Have you not seen some of the numbers of pages these printers get? In Canadian dollars:

6500a/6500a plus/7500a wide format; use the 920XL cartridge, which is $38 CAD and goes for 1200 sheets, the colours are $30/each and go for 800 sheets.

8500a/8500a plus use the 940XL cartridge, which is $44 and goes for 2200 sheets, and the colours are $38/each and go for 1400 sheets, now if its not just me that seems ON PAR if not BETTER than a laser.

Just sayin.
