Camera bump is atrocious. Their hard-on for all things and design 'thin' has entirely ruined the aesthetic from the 4/5 iPhone days. Remember the flush camera, how nicely it looked against the back? How you could sit your phone down flat, without having it rest on one of the most important, breakable parts of your phone?

I really don't get the thinking behind the super sleek device with the huge bump in the back. The S8 looks gross from the back and it's the only reason I haven't thought of getting one...

The thinking is to make it as light as possible. The 4 was a great design but it felt like a brick. Aesthetically it's my favorite design but my overall favorite design is the 6-7 series because it feels great in the hand and is light for its size.

Hopefully this new iPhone 8 re-design means we have a new re-design coming to the iPad's. I know we have just had a refresh with the 10.5" iPP, but an iPP using this design language would be killer :D!

Let me see if this will clear this up. Current iPhone 7+ for landscape video you have to hold phone landscape mode where the current camera is vertical. New phone already vertical camera=landscape mode video?

wow... again... no...all that depth stuff is done in software... doesn't matter where the 2 lenses are.

Jokes on you! There is no touch id at all! :D

Gosh... I was just thinking about what the iPhone was like before TouchID.

I never used a passcode because I hated typing it in a zillion times a day. I just used "Slide to Unlock" which was clever... but somewhat annoying in hindsight.

And those who did have a passcode had to "Slide" and then tap out their passcode.

We were living like animals back then!

Now I just press my finger and it's unlocked and opened in half-a-second.

Yup, every year. This is definitely it. I'm not sure who would buy an iPhone 7S Plus if this thing has a bigger screen in a smaller enclosure, plus dual cameras.

The plus model will still be quite a bit wider, which is going to make the screen feel much bigger. Having a taller screen doesn't add much to the phone experience.

At the same time, you don't want the phone to be too wide, because that makes it harder to handle while using.

It's not a cut and dry perfect-choice scenario.

So many complainers ITT. Then when it is announced everyone will say Apple is doomed. Then they'll sell millions and the stock price will shoot up.

Just another day on Macrumors. :)

Suckers. Stop your (ill-placed) gushing.

These are fake parts based on completely made-up renderings.

Tbh, I never have my phone in a spot where other people can see/use it without me being there. It's true though, for those who felt a passcode was necessary, that must have sucked big time!

Although they had the pretty iOS6 back then. Now we have flatzo iOS design.

What's shocking to me is that I've seen several people explain the front bump for portrait but one person had the wherewithal to question what happens in landscape view?

Does that space shut off? Is it blank? If it's white for a white phone does it remain white? That's quite the UX conundrum.

There are definitely people that say it's ugly and then end up buying. I've seen quotes get pulled up of people not in favor of a leak, but then talk about how they are now owners of said phone.

I just think it's funny how people say how much they dislike a leak. It's like people don't understand that the finished polished product is going to look great. People will change their minds once we have that trailer reveal.
Yep that would be me. I complained endlessly about the missing headphone jack and joked about the resemblance of the iPhone 7 Plus to Bender the Robot from Futurama. Guess what I'm typing this post on! :D

I think the leaks and mock ups look very encouraging. I think IPhone 8 is going to be really cool. Maybe it will turn out a bit quirky looking, but definitely cool (according to my tastes of course--I don't presume to speak for others). Unfortunately I won't be getting one, but I will envy those who do. It's just not in the 2017 budget and would probably be a massive pain to get a hold of in 2017 anyway. I shall enjoy spending time with them at the Apple Store and Best Buy.

To me it's still the same design on the iPhone 6/6s and 7.
4 years and we can't get a different look. No bueno.
...
That's not worth me coming out again for another 1k for a phone that is still basically like my iPhone 7 plus jet black.
...
With the flash in the middle of both cameras won't we have glare issue if we use the flash that I never use on people.

And that UGLY silver rim around the camera. That is so samsung.
What's the importance in having it look different? Are you worried people won't know you bought the latest phone?

I don't think they're expecting every customer to buy a new phone every year, they're simply working on iterative improvements to a design they think is pretty great.

Call me crazy, but Apple seems to know a thing or two about cameras, having built hundreds of millions of them - I expect they've got the flash under control.

And I expect that separate camera piece fits in from the other side, ending up flush or nearly so, with no silver ring showing. I'm not sure why it's a separate piece - assuming these photos are non-fake and close to what will go into production.

While I like your thinking (why why WHY camera bump?!?), it appears (to me) to be the reflection of [say] a book case or something tall that would be standing out of frame to the right.

YES! Thanks for finally helping me understand what I'm seeing. A reflection of a bookshelf!

sorry to say but apple is still way behind samsung :(
As an owner of an S8+ and an IPhone 7Plus I have to ask you...in what way?

I switch between the two phones pretty much all day long. I find them very comparable in capability and battery life and in other points of comparison. I have to say I tend to favor the iPhone 7 Plus camera more--the zoom comes in handy so often. Samsung needs to catch up with a dual camera.

When I am watching videos I do actually prefer the display on the iPhone 7 Plus, oddly enough, because the one on the S8+ is too shiny and curvy so reflections are a bit of a bother. If the iPhone 8 has an OLED display with Apple's current high standards of color calibration and with a nice FLAT glass, I think that will be a point in Apple's favor. Curved displays look cool but when actually trying to live with them there are a few small annoyances to deal with.

I do quite like both of my phones. I don't see the current iPhone 7 Plus as so terribly behind the S8+ so I think the IPhone 8 should compare favorably. That's just my opinion of course. I am very interested in yours. I'll have to read through the thread and see if you already elaborate on this.

Oh I almost forgot to mention that my Samsungs past and present do far out perform my iPhones as actual phones. I do wonder if going to a glass chassis for wireless charging purposes (if that does happen) will help the iPhone perform better as a phone.

The "cutout" will house the status bar, which has been pointed out many times. I'm not sure why there is a bunch of negativity surrounding this, as Apple will make it "blend" in quite nicely.

Which leads me to think that we won't be seeing a white iPhone 8.

Do you have any links to mockups of this? Or discussion threads? I seem to have missed them. All the photos show the heinous cutout.

I am surprised how many people can't see that t his is flush... that's a bevelled edge lip it slots in from behind.

you need to see the full size image I think...

That's not flush bro
[doublepost=1497310288][/doublepost]It appears the black part of the camera piece is the only part that sits into the hole on the back shell. Which means the entire depth of the metal camera module surrounding, equates to ugly camera bump goodness :p

Yeah...I think this is believable but what annoys me is that this is a design change that everybody should be getting this year, not just a selective group of customers willing to pay the absurd price of this new device. It should be Apple's standard offering this year and not some magic lamp of an iPhone. Usual Apple tactics though - make people pay more for something new, something that should have come out a couple years ago.

While I agree completely with you that this should be available to everyone this year, is it even possible for Apple to make enough of this though? With a new design, it takes a while to perfect the production line and leak indicate that this has very low yield rate at the moment. I'd rather have it released this year in limited quantity than wait another year for production to catch up to demand

There basically could be two potential solutions:

1) https://cdn.macrumors.com/article-new/2017/06/iphone-8-renders-ios-11.jpg

iphone-8-renders-ios-11.jpg

2) https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com...y=82&strip=all&w=1000&strip=all&w=1600&h=1000

iphone-8-iphone-edition.jpg

Top one includes background bleed into corners next to sensor bar.

Bottom one includes artificially blacked out status area (not currently in iOS) in order to make the top of phone look more even

If this is legit, what we are getting in September, I will retire my 6+. If all we get is 6sss then I will push it another year.
