I'm sure 3rd party solutions will make their way to the market soon, supporting all iDevices...

The iPad Air 2 has a different touch screen sensor in it that prevents most Bluetooth stylus from working with it. I bought a Wacomb stylus with 2000+ levels of pressure and it isn't compatible at all. Works on literally every other iPad but the Air 2. Maybe the touch screen sensor is similar to the iPad Pro and they'll eventually enable the iPad Air 2 to support the Pencil. I guess only time will tell.

Let's be honest, the pencil is the main reason most of us buying the iPad Pro.

Heck, I'd rather buy the iPad Mini if it had pencil support but it doesn't.

Also, unlike Tim Cook, I'm not pretending that it will replace my MacBook, and I will end up carrying both.

Wait a minute...This does not come with the iPad Pro? Wow!
What wizardry exists in the pencil that it costs as much as the old Apple TV?
well . . .
  • lightning-fast responsiveness - the subsystem scans its signal at an astounding 240 times per second, giving it twice the data points it normally collects with your finger.
  • Force Touch like Feature - The carefully positioned sensor determines precisely how hard the tip of Apple Pencil is being pressed down. Press harder to draw thicker lines. Or use a gentle touch for wispy hairlines.
  • Shading - Two tilt sensors built within the tip of Apple Pencil calculate the exact orientation and angle of your hand. . . So you can create shading effects simply by tilting Apple Pencil the way you would a charcoal or conventional pencil.
  • 12 Hours of Battery Life - 15 seconds of charging = 30 minutes of use.
  • Weight side - Keeps it from rolling (. . .wow. Even today Apple pays attention to these little stuff)
Basically it's a cool stylus with an Apple logo on it. I'll take 3 of them .

What a terrible launch

Launch an iPad pro with no available pen or keyboard

Normally problematic if you only wanted it for the pencil and 3 weeks later realize you hate the pencil.
BUT holiday return policy started the same day the iPad came out, so (in the US) you should have until early January to return it, lots of time to play with the pencil and the iPad.

Kind of nice how that worked out. It's all nice and shiny and awesome now, but in 6 weeks if you aren't thrilled with it, you can get your $1000 back!

Though the iPad Pro has been widely available in Apple retail stores since its launch last Wednesday, supplies of the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard have been much more limited. At launch, there were no Apple Pencils or Smart Keyboards available for purchase in the U.S. with in-store pickup, and the first online orders listed delivery dates of November 19 at the earliest, more than a week after the iPad Pro became available.

As of today, pre-order customers with some of the earliest upcoming estimated delivery dates are seeing some movement with their orders, receiving notifications that their Apple Pencils are now preparing for shipment. MacRumors reader Jose's Apple Pencil is preparing to ship with an estimated delivery date of November 20 to November 24, and there are a few other reports of Apple Pencil shipment changes on Twitter.

applepencilshipment.jpg

With orders already preparing for shipment, it's likely customers who managed to pre-order right around midnight on November 11 will start receiving their shipments later this week. A few customers in the United Kingdom have already received their Apple Pencil orders.

Customers who order an Apple Pencil online right now will not be able to receive the device until mid-to-late December, and the same goes for the Smart Keyboard, which is equally scarce. After the iPad Pro's midnight launch, delivery estimates for the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard quickly slipped from late November into December.

Some Apple retail stores around the country have been receiving small Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard shipments on a daily basis, but as Apple is not allowing in-store pickup for the Apple Pencil, it's not possible to use Apple's website or app to determine which stores have stock. Instead, customers hoping to get an Apple Pencil before December are having to visit their local Apple Stores on a daily basis hoping to get lucky with shipment timing.

The Apple Pencil, which enables pressure sensitive drawing on the iPad Pro, retails for $99. The Smart Keyboard is priced at $169.

I ordered one its processing I think the pencil should I been priced at $49.99 I think $99.99 is steep!

So, I went to the Apple store tonight and fiddled around with the Pro and Pencil. I tried to use it in Pages to annotate a passage, and found out it doesn't work. I asked and was told it only works on drawing and note apps. This surprised me. It seems like one of the obvious uses of this pencil would be to annotate PDFs and other documents.

I must have misunderstood??

it must be popular because with shipping dates of 4 to 5 weeks. I'm going to try macmall or amazon if they have them in stock

Isn't this in line with other similar stylii from third parties with the same feature set?
According to the reviews I've read and watched, this isn't your run of the mill active digitizer stylus... it's a pretty big leap in stylus technology because of its low latency, accuracy and very natural feel.

lol $99

No idea how I missed that at the announcement.. sometimes Apple is too embarrassing

The Apple Pencil should've been included with every iPad Pro purchase. $99 for a glorified stylus is a ripoff!
If the palm rejection actually works this will be more than a "glorified stylus". I have used a capacitive stylus (iPads and Androids), wacom pen with surface pro 2, and whatever tech the surface pro 3 used. I also used the resistive stylii back in the day, and nothing has yet done a great job replacing the pencil or pen.

Surfaces are close, though the palm rejection got worse with the SP3 as it disconnects from the screen at a much closer distance, the distance I lift my hand when moving around the screen and try as I might I can't find a way to consistently get my pen to get close enough to the screen before my palm hits something.

If the iPad Pro wakes as fast as other iOS devices, and the pencil palm rejects, than this 99$ pen will be worth every penny. The wake speed is something none of the previous pens had (maybe the Note but I never used that) because they were on full laptops, and it was quite frustrating to start writing only to realize you opened that calendar or something on accident, and sometimes the damn thing didn't want to close.

That said, while I understand their reason for keeping the pencil separate, I don't find it appropriate that there is disparity in production between the devices. It seems that even if every iPad Pro owner buys a Pencil right away there should be a pencil shipping the same time as every iPad.

Pencil and Keyboard (only US version) is expected to ship in 4-5 weeks in Austria (and Germany too) and we don't even have a local Apple Store in Austria. But I am not interested in any kind of iPad/Tablet.

I do like the surface pen that is magnetically latches on the side, and how their keyboard cover has the flimsy pen holder slot if you want to hold it there (it's a bit too flimsy though). The surface pen also has a clip, and can be turned upside down to erase. I think all these features will eventually show up with the Apple Pen.

What I don't like about the Apple pen is that it has a lid that you can lose, and no clip to the device. I think these are valid criticisms but nothing major, third parties will fill in the gaps. It has the technical specs which is the most important.

As I said to someone at work, you can carry the pen with the adapters you will need. :)
