Well I have to say $100 for the Pencil is ridiculously high priced, but then again for a good 35mm DSLR or Mirrorless camera it can be upwards of $3000 for the camera body only and you have to spend about another $1000+ on the lens since it's not included. At least you can still use the iPad Pro without the Pencil. Camera is useless without the lens.

Well Pencil by 53 retails for 50-60 bucks so naturally Apple has put their premium pricing on their version.

Apples pricing is really getting ridiculous

Can't agree more with this. I was tempted to upgrade my 6 Plus to the 6S Plus, but found that the same RAM in the 6S Plus model would set me back almost $1100 - I don't like the installment plans... I think they make great mobile devices, but cost is just way too much. Wish they would drop a bit and make it easier to stick with them rather than search for alternatives.

Love my Apple Devices, but I have been paying Apple Tax to Apple for the past 26 years.

Here in the uk, my iPad pro arrived last Thursday, the smart keyboard and pencil arrived on Saturday. Doodling has commenced. I'm no artist but it's good

I would love to go back to about 2000 and tell everyone '...and in 2015, Apple shall sell a pencil. And it shall cost $99!'.

With that in mind, I would like to say that in about 2030, Apple shall sell a piece of string. And it shall cost $500.
The Apple String will have the processing power of IBM's Watson.

The Apple Pencil should've been included with every iPad Pro purchase. $99 for a glorified stylus is a ripoff!
You can buy a third party capacitive stylus for a buck. If you don't need what the Apple Pencil brings to the table(t), then just get any old stylus. You won't even know the difference.

The thing is, Apple promotes the Pencil as an almost necessary peripheral like a keyboard or mouse/trackpad so why not include the Pencil with every iPad Pro the same way every iMac comes with a bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse?

I'm sorry but the Apple Pencil alone doesn't seem to justify the steep $99 price tag.

Just don't get it if you can't justify paying for it. No need to apologize.

it's not a pencil though.. that's just the name of the product. so of course you would confuse the crap out of people in 2000.

I want one sooo badly and have to wait another three weeks. Apple, that's a major screw up!
And all the people that complain about the price should look up how much a comparable stylus costs. (eg Adonit Jot Touch or Adobe Ink) It's not a big difference and you have to consider that the Pencil has a tilt sensor.

Because they wouldn't make as much money and people who don't want the pencil would still have to indirectly pay for it if packaged together. £79 really is not expensive - one or two hours work for most designers/art directors.

OMG Apple String!?? What does it do? Is it Magic? I don't know what it is, but I want some! Also put me down for a neoprene string case so it doesn't get dented.

I think that Apple display sensors, pencil and keyboard will gradually be released for all iPads, in 2016-2017. The technology already proved to be a hit with iPad pro, so it will go down to lower iPads. Maybe also iPhone 7 Plus.
The next year's Pro will have another technology feature to make it stand out, maybe RAM or even higher sensitivity.

I was in my local Apple Store yesterday and finally got to play with the Pencil. It's definitely needed for the new Photoshop app, where adjustment areas are so fine that a finger wouldn't really work. (That app is really amazing, BTW.)

For drawing, there was a noticeable lag when I moved the Pencil quickly. It isn't nearly as responsive as Apple claims. But when slowly sketching, it does feel very natural.

Normally problematic if you only wanted it for the pencil and 3 weeks later realize you hate the pencil.
BUT holiday return policy started the same day the iPad came out, so (in the US) you should have until early January to return it, lots of time to play with the pencil and the iPad.

Kind of nice how that worked out. It's all nice and shiny and awesome now, but in 6 weeks if you aren't thrilled with it, you can get your $1000 back!

Gary

What is the return policy for 2015 holiday season? I heard from several agents that it started on November 1st. But I still don't see anything on their website.

Then you're clearly not familiar with the difference in performance and precision between a stylus and a professional drawing tool. It is tantamount to saying a Wacom tablet is just a glorified trackpad.

$99 not only provides you a professional drawing tool, it is rechargeable (in merely seconds) and won't feel like a flimsy piece of plastic. Clearly, not many of you have ever bought any accessories in the PC market. Battery $80, Keyboard $100, Docking Station $200, Mouse $80, Webcam $150, Generic USB cable $30 and this is probably being overly kind on the pricing. Sure you can buy nameless low-grade peripherals that'll set your house on fire or last a week, but generally speaking $99 for the Apple Pencil is hardly out of control.
