It is really important that the folded experience not differ too dramatically from any other iPhone. Despite people's desire for phone and tablet in one device, the phone part is way more important, and needs to be a close to what using an iPhone is already like. If this part is heavily compromised just to achieve the unfolded experience, it will turn off a lot of users and lead to returns.

All that AI image generation technology out there...and Macrumors runs an article about what the device looks like in detail...with an ancient mockup that looks nothing like the description.

The volume buttons will be located on the top edge of the device […] The Touch ID power button [continues] to be located on the right edge of the device
This is stupid. Since the iPhold is so short, they should relocate the power button back to the top, where it was until the 5S/SE, and place the volume buttons on the side where they make more sense.

Think it will not have a telephoto lens and that will be truly disappointing. Also as far as colors go, think it will be white/silver and black just like how it was when the iPhone X was released. That too is disappointing. Don't know why Apple cannot bring actual colors and not black/white to their Pro/flagship devices. Hopefully the Orange for the 17 Pro is not going to be the only bright colored option.

So maybe I missed it, but the inner display camera is under the screen but the outer display is a hole punch?

Why not make them both under displays? (Wonder if its cost, if it is, why make one over the other?)
The outer screen has less space beneath it than the (left side of the) inner screen.

I’m so used to a Pro Max screen that the smaller outer screen of current foldables feels too confining.
The outer screen will be wider than the Pro Max, but shorter than the mini, so it’s a bit difficult to compare.

It makes financial sense, and some engineering sense to figure some stuff out in other generations and build with those (or maybe they have a end game and they are working backwards to get costs ironed out).

I'd probably say that the iPhone Air is a hint of where the fold panels are heading. Tim's Apple waits and copies and makes tiny improvements, so I'm looking at the Samsung Edge to Fold 7 situation, as well as Google's Pixel to Fold situation, which leveraged their candy bar phones to move towards the folds.

Also a guess...Apple will tweak the software to avoid overlaps on the crease, to avoid you looking at it. Then say "Only with our combined teams..."

Apple will want the buttons to stay on the same side of the phone regardless of whether the phone is open or closed. Thus everything must be on the right side.
But it’s not the same side open or closed. The left side when closed becomes the right side when open.

I bet the volume buttons at the top will change which of them is up and down depending on whether it is open or closed, so that the left one is always down and the right one is always up.

I am very interested to see how invisible the hinge crease is. However I am vey excited, if they nail that, of a foldable iPad Pro coming soon. It would be so cool to have a full sized iPad Pro that could fold and side into a coat pocket or small bag.

It's not about the number of cameras. It's the quality of photos the lenses take.
Exactly. Plus skill level. I would bet my life savings I could take a better photo with an iPhone Air than most can take with their Pro. The Pro is like the F-150 of smart phones. The vast majority don't know/don't use what it's capable of. But it's the best seller that everyone seems to have. It's kind of laughable.

Interesting if they actually manage to achieve a durable scratch resistant 'crease-free' display. I'm skeptical.

I personally don't like folding screens anyway. To me a phone is for accessing quick information in a compact discrete form factor. Having to unfold the damn thing every time you use it is just adding an annoying extra step. I don't like wallet cases for the same reason. I don't want my phone to be a mini tablet, even if it can fold up and fit in my pocket.

To be honest we are all stuck to our phones too much as it is. If Apple really cared about the world in the way they pretend to, they would invent 'methaphone' to treat the addiction and bring socialising back into fashion.
I have seen this type of comment many times. When closed, it's a phone. Use it like a phone. There is no need or reason to open it to take a call, send an email or text, or to do anything that you can do with a phone. You open it when you want a larger screen for viewing websites, photos, videos, etc. When closed it's just like any other phone.

Isn’t that the whole point of the outer screen??

Everyone here is forgetting that Apple compromises on version 1.0 products on purpose.

V2 - Three cameras!
V3 - Now with Face ID!
V4 - LIDAR sensor!

They do this because we’re all suckers and it works.

Samsung and others jam as much in as they can because that’s what they have to do to have marketing advantages against Apple.
