All of this new tech (including the iPhone Air) just proves Apple was TOO EARLY with the iPhone mini. Today they could easily make a smaller iPhone that's thin and light and gets all day battery!
The issue is that for the most part, people moved away from smaller phones, the average user thinks bigger is better.

It’s an iPad Mini fold. Take an iPad mini. Remove the bezel. Fold it in half. Add another camera in back, a screen in front and bingo you have the new device. It’s even the same screen size as the iPad mini. I expect a full blown full power iPad Mini Fold. It justifies the price. It fits in your front shirt pocket. It runs the Creative suite.
Definitely iPad mini with iPhone capability so an evolution of iPad mini and iPhone with transformative experience!!! So great!!! ❤️❤️❤️

For any doubters about foldable phones, I recently changed my Pixel 9 Pro for a Pixel 10 Pro Fold and I love it.

I travel with work and spend time in hotels, and the ability to open it up and watch movies on a larger screen is so useful.
You can see the crease if you look, especially when the screen is off, but once it's on and you're watching a movie you don't notice it.

I love it so far and I'm absolutely certain Apple's implementation will be an improvement.

It'll come down to cost, I managed to get mine for £875 which was too good a deal to miss.
Most hotel rooms, have a screen that is orders of magnitude bigger and brighter than any phone or tablet, in reality they are not really useful, i had a foldable before, however, i do understand you, a lot of people like them, i understand.

TouchID has never worked for me, I’m hoping it’ll have FaceID otherwise I’ll have to stick with the Pro Max.
Too many times, that has been the exact opposite for me. What kills me is when I, for example, sign in to my email provider, Face ID works but does not when I subsequently log in to my newspaper. Both logins without changing location, same lighting, same posture. Never a problem with Touch ID.

now that i’m out of school i’m finding my ipad rather useless. not sure i’m gonna need that iphone fold after all. kindle has reading covered, or laptop for real work, or iphone pro max ….. the max is the largest screen i’m willing to doom scroll on, any larger screen is unsafe and unhealthy. social media needs black box warnings.

My primary wish is for a reasonable price point. My secondary wish is for a telephoto camera in place of ultra wide. How many people actually zoom out more than they zoom in? Might be a physics limitation, though.

If I get one final wish, it would be for a longer iPhone Upgrade Program for such a device, say three years? It’s gonna be expensive even if they go with lower end pricing, which I doubt. Might need four years!

I’m super excited about foldable from Apple. I hope the rumor is regarding the 5.5 inch display our wrong is that seems a bit small. 6 inch book style fold would be great!
After having a great experience with my Z Fold7, I’m eager to acquire a foldable iPhone.

What I’ve learned is the 6.5” outer and 8.0” inner Z Fold7 displays are the minimum acceptable sizes.

The displays rumored to be smaller on the iPhone fold is a deal breaker. Hopefully that rumor is wrong.

What if this won't be marketed as an iPhone, but a foldable iPad? Without a cover screen it would work as a protection for the display inside. And if there is a cover screen that could run iOS, when you open it, boom, there's iPadOS. (I kid, I kid.)

Correct, most do, but you can't really scroll your TikTok feed, Facebook, or YouTube on them 🙂

Recently. How about durability with those things?
A Pro Max can take anything thrown at it and keep on ticking.
I’m not babysitting a stupid phone.
Well, I haven't had it long, but I never put cases on my phones and I never treat it with any form of consideration, but time will tell I suppose

pointless, never took off with samsung and others. but good to have a new design that wont sell. will be crazy expensive. will sell in UAE when put some gold on it and 1-2 zeros to the price tag. i want someting i know its a big ask but just a working software. i dont want bugs i dont want silly things. and i love to have a good battery life. working software updates.

I had three folding phones in the past. Including an Oppo find n for its more comfortable form factor.

They aren’t worth it. You don’t get enough benefit. You will get more benefit from a folding device as you approach something larger - like a laptop.

In any foldable, the internal screen glass must be soft to allow bending. Thus it wont be scratch resistant.

That might be totally ok — scratches in a non-fordable phone are often created when people lay out the phone on a surface screen down and the phone slides a little bit. One would never need to do that with the internal screen: while small particles (sand) gathers there, it is not rubbed against the screen. Also, keys etc do not rub against the phone's internal screen when the phone is in pocket or purse.
Yup, just like the Samsung foldables. I carved a dick and balls into the display model at my local store, pmsl. Was super easy to do with my fingernail.

Then I just don’t see it working.

I think Apple has a unique form factor here which is smaller than the competition. And value wise you’ll be getting a ‘regular’ iPhone (2 cameras, non-pro chip etc) and unfolded a smaller iPad mini. Combining the cost of purchasing the devices separately you end up around the £1300 price point.

To me this seems to be the perfect way to enter this market in a big way.

If it’s £2000 then you’ll have another Vison Pro style niche device, heck for that price I could almost get a regular iPhone, iPad mini and a MacBook.
put it this way id be shocked if it was much under £2000.

I think they will certainly be under £2000 for the base model with storage upgrades pushing it well above £2000 but anyone hoping for it to be more like £1200 will be disappointed.

And yes, it will be pushed into the realms of un-affordability for a lot of customers but the same can be said for a lot of the more premium Apple products.

I’ve been waiting on this, but no Face ID, less cameras, and a regular chip versus approach chip, I guess I’ve been assuming all this time that it would be just a foldable pro version

Or you
I was about to post something very similar to this. You are so right! That's why I usually refrain from buying first gen anything. The only time I did buy something first gen was the iPad because it was just a giant iPhone lol
Or can keep it in a box for 20 years and sell for a huge profit at auction. 😆
Everyone here is forgetting that Apple compromises on version 1.0 products on purpose.

V2 - Three cameras!
V3 - Now with Face ID!
V4 - LIDAR sensor!

They do this because we’re all suckers and it works.

Samsung and others jam as much in as they can because that’s what they have to do to have marketing advantages against Apple.

Samsung foldables internal screen has a _plastic_ screen "protector" installed by default. What you scratched was not glass (under the protector). It can only be replaced by their service center.

I hope Apple will have a better solution. That said, they seemed to have already experimented with plastic covered glass: Vision Pro front panel is exactly that.

I did have a original pixel fold, i never had any issues for the 3 years i used it, i still keep it as a back up, just in case any thing happens to my 17 PM.

I still find it highly unlikely there won’t be Face ID. Rivals have it so taking a step back is something very unApple like.
I want Face ID as well, but how would that work with a foldable? On the outside or inside? Maybe outside, then it unlocks and you open, and it it locks while open it, requires a pin?

Apple's first foldable iPhone will feature relocated volume buttons, an all-black camera plateau, a smaller Dynamic Island, and more, according to design leaks from a known Weibo leaker.

Apple-Foldable-Thumb.jpg

The user known as "Instant Digital" today claimed to share several key details about the design of the foldable iPhone:

  • The volume buttons will be located on the top edge of the device, aligned to the right, similar to the iPad mini.
  • The Touch ID power button and Camera Control continue to be located on the right edge of the device, just like other recent iPhones.
  • The left side of the device is smooth and does not have any buttons.
  • The front-facing cameras feature a single punch-hole design, resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island.
  • The back left of the device features an iPhone Air-style camera plateau, containing two horizontally arranged cameras, the microphone, and the flash. Unlike the iPhone Air, the camera plateau appears to be completely black and not match the color of the device's body.
  • The only "confirmed" color option is said to be white, but a single additional color is expected to be available upon launch, giving customers just two choices.

The motherboard is apparently located on the right side of the device. As to not run cables across the screen to the left side for the volume buttons (where they are located on all other iPhone models), Apple is said to have decided to run them directly upwards, which maximizes internal space.

The internal structure purportedly features an innovative stacked design, with the space being almost entirely dedicated to the display and battery. It is also said to feature the biggest battery ever used in an iPhone.

Instant Digital has a good track record for Apple rumors and has provided some strikingly accurate information, such as the imminent launch of 2023's Yellow iPhone 14, the frosted back glass of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, the Apple Watch Series 9 as a minor refresh, spatial video capture on the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPad Air and iPad Pro's move to a landscape front-facing camera, the M4 iPad Pro's nano-texture display option, the iPhone 16 Pro's battery capacities, and continued Apple Watch band compatibility through the Apple Watch Series 10.

For the iPhone 17 Pro alone, the leaker reported the device's 256GB base storage configuration and its improved telephoto camera, as well as its improved battery life, thermal design, and display brightness. As a result, their reports are worth taking seriously.

Other rumors suggest that Apple's first foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch crease-free inner display, a 5.5-inch cover display, Touch ID, two rear cameras, the A20 chip, and the "C2" modem. It is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max later this year.

I don’t understand the reference to the volume buttons being on the top right as on the iPad mini. On my iPad mini the volume buttons are aligned to the top left. 🤷‍♂️
