No one cares. 5G is going to be a thing in 3 years the earliest, until then its just marketing. Also, this Qualcomm chip inside is a powerhog. I'll wait this out as there is no point getting 5G now.
I think you missed the point that I was making. The point is, apple said the phrase “5G” over, and over, and over, and over, and over again at the event, and no one cares about it in their actual usage.

Get ready for some type of antennae-gate in the next few days.

You heard it hear first.
Why? The reason for the antenna gate on the iPhone 4 was because of where the two antennas were placed. If your hand bridged the gap between the two antennas, they canceled each other out. That was changed with the CDMA iPhone 4, and the iPhone 4S, which eliminated the problem.
I highly doubt that Apple did the same thing with the iPhone 12. I guarantee that they put the antenna lines in very specific places, that way there’s no way that any type of skin contact messes with connection.
As for the MMWave window on the side, it’s not an antenna. It’s a window. And you’re more likely to lose MMWave Signal by other forces like wind, rain, or distance than you are by your hand covering up the window.

I did think they over-did the 5G thing. Yes, it's important (or will be going forward) but here in the UK (for instance), EE who are the main driver for 5G only have coverage in the major cities and even there it's spotty.

Obviously countries are different but I don't believe people in the UK will rush to add that shiny new phone to their shopping cart (even on contracts/extended credit - which is, let's be honest the only way Apple can sell these phones nowadays) just because it's faster. Most people will still be happy with LTE and (during the huge economic uncertainty) just be glad they can keep their jobs, put food on the table and pay their electric/gas bills.

Is it me or are these first impression comments a little underwhelming? Maybe it’s because I’m sitting on the fence now between an 11 pro max for a 12 pro or 12 pro max
I have X and thinking really hard about Max this time. Wife has 8 plus and was giving that a good workout. The new max is about that size minus the bezel.

I'm sure you're right. I just get a hunch there will be something related to reception. No proof or evidence whatsoever.

I have a XS and feel exactly the same. This is a definite pass for me and I always upgrade every 2 years.

That said, very excited for everyone who does upgrade! Nothing else quite like a new Apple product!

Okay. You obviously know a lot more about it than I do. I'm not a cellular phone engineer.
Admit it. All you did was post a meaningless guess. The fact that you are a cell phone engineer means nothing given your prior statement.

You said “ I just get a hunch there will be something related to reception. No proof or evidence whatsoever.”

If you want to throw around your job title as some kind of way to silence me, you are going to have to post more than a shot in the dark guess.

This is the first year out of the last 6 easy that I did not upgrade. My 11 Pro Max seriously does everything I could think of asking it to do. 5G means nothing to me given where I live. The new form factor looks nice, but I’ve never gone without a case for any of my phones; phones drop, and drops are bad. So once I wrap it in a Otterbox Commuter, it all looks the same.

For the first time in a long time, I’m sitting pat and I really don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything.

The 12 and 12 Pro will be (and should be) underwhelming upgrades from an 11 Pro, to be fair. Even The Verge review of the 12 Pro said as much, basically. And the camera comparisons between 11 Pro and 12/12 Pro are very incremental. They’ve just added night mode on all lenses. The 12 and 12 Pro look great, but are very small upgrades over the 11 Pros. 11 to 12 is a different story since you’re going LCD to OLED, slight smaller form, and much smaller bezels.

Damn, I have to wait at least another week since our employee who orders phones waited until late night to order them the first day they went on sale.
