Received my 14" today and honestly super happy I upgraded (from a 2020 13" i7)

The screen is stunning, the extra space makes such a difference. The thickness of the body really isn't as bad as I thought it would be, a few hours in and its already grown on me.

Ive been running/installing programs, moving files all day and not even a hint of the fan so far. Its handling it all in its stride......and the notch? Its really not so bad, you stop noticing it very quickly. It's a good compromise for a much crisper camera.

If you're still deciding whether to take the jump or not, DO IT.....You won't regret it.

Where I live must be at the end of the UPS driver's run because they always deliver at 7 PM.

Nah he's just playing with your new MBpro... probably has the location tracker around his dog's or cat's neck to look like he's making deliveries all over the area. Apple needs to put a useometer on these things to catch delivery-driver, launch-day fun. ;)

How does it compare to previous MacBook Pros?
My last Pro is a 2015 so overall is a massive jump, but I had really big expectations for this screen and of all the possible “defects”, I think ghosting is personally the worst that could happen lol
I’ll get over it soon, it’s just disappointing on such an expensive machine

Sounds like it's about the same as the outgoing model then:

From above: 52.4ms Grey/Grey, 34.9ms Black/White. It's probably more noticeable now due to the higher refresh rate.

It shouldn't be a problem unless you are trying to play fast-paced games. But this is a professional tool. I haven't seen too many colour accurate screens out there also have excellent response times. Maybe next-gen OLED?
I notice it every time I scroll, swipe, etc., that's how bad it is. iPhone 13 Pro is perfect though. I also have IPS DCI-P3 monitor with 165Hz with 1-4ms response time. I actually stop to think if I really want to use iPad or Mac because of these slow screens. It's just sad.

with all the marketing and other products on the market, it seems that Apple missed the mark on this promotion mini-led IMHO.

its a pro machine. Their users own monitors and devices that deliver superior performance. I'll pass on this 2021 model and wait for 2022.

Oops my bad, forgot to edit my post:
It's shot in slow mo because it's much harder to capture it on camera than when looking with your own eyes.
My guess is that the screen reduced the refresh rate because this is a relatively static screen. I'm curious if there were a running video in another window, if this would still happen.

If there's movement on screen refresh rate jumps up, he's moving the window so refresh rate should be at least 90Hz and there's a difference between low refresh rate and slow response time. Low refresh rate would make text in that video choppy and now it is showing a smudge trail, that's slow pixel response time.

The Safari scrolling issue is real. In fact, I went to the ufo framerate test website and it appears that on the new machines that Safari is locked at 60hz, which is interesting, as Chrome was at 120.
Oh is chome 120 scrolling, why did apple not add 120 to safari

No keyboard backlight control?

Tried adding a control, fn, option, command with the brightness keys, but nothing…

some people can't even notice the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz refresh rate.
vision scientists here, I can contribute to that ?

Flicker fusion frequency for foveal vision (that is the part of the retina where you see something sharp) is on average about 25 frame/pictures per second (25 Hz).

For peripheral vision this is dfferent, many people can see the 50 or 60 Hz flickering of light tube “in the corner of their eye” (aka “peripheral visual field”)

And then there is the difference in colour/day light and greyscale/night vision. Flicker fusion frequency lowers in darkness - that’s why cinemas dim the lights before starting the movie - but visual acuity increases… which brings us to a few observations:

- the photoreceptors in the human eye detect a lot of things the human brain might or might not filter out.

- in the right “environmental” condition your brain will ”recognize” things or not (here and here - yep, that’s the same colors in the picture, but your brain does not agree ?).

And that’s why some people sensitive/receptive to e.g. PWM by the way.

gotchu fam.

I hope it works with Monterrey. Works beautifully with my M1 Air to restore F5+F6 keys to key brightness up and down. At least on Big Sur. havent leapt to Monterrey so cant test

Screw Dictation and DND.

Thanks, I’ll give it a shot after the migration assistant is all done.

Maybe Apple could release a future firmware update to enable a modifier key + brightness to control.

Seems like a miss. I bet Jony Ive is laughing in a pub somewhere about it.

I’m transferring my data from a 13” 2020 i7 as we speak — I’m so excited to be free from The Lapburner! I bought the 2020 to get a keyboard that works, and have not been very happy with the machine overall. I am ready to fall in love with the 14” M1 Pro. The keyboard even feels improved over the 2020, yay! Maybe it’s from being used to it on the iPhone, but the notch seems like a non-issue.

I have literally never in my life seen a community of people so obsessively driven to find anything to complain about. It's bordering on pathological.
Believe me, I thought this was THE perfect laptop before info about these screens surfaced. I WANTED it to be perfect and I hate complaining BUT using +20ms response time screens in >$2000 computers is just wrong. To me, it's literally the only negative aspect of this laptop.

P.S iPad Pro has up to 58ms response time, it's insane.
