Too bad pixel response time of these new screens is awful. It's similar to iPad Pro 11, response times are in the range of 28-52ms. There's so much trailing/ghosting going on it's crazy. AnandTech reviewer posted a video of it in action.

EDIT: forgot to add video:
It's shot in slow mo because it's much harder to capture it on camera than when looking with your own eyes.

Captured in slow motion at a high rate? And played back normal? Seriously?

I'm an IT Manager and worked at Apple Corporate for 5 years. I've had my hands on a lot of Macs and usually have a new model every year to play with. The 16" Max blew me away.
  • Holding the Mac is a pleasure, it feels so futuristic yet so familiar from past Macs.
  • The display is awesome. ProMotion isn't too noticeable for me yet, I only noticed the difference when I was swiping along the dock.
  • Production is great. I've played with SAP, some web services and did a quick iMovie project of my newborn and it was all so smooth.
  • MagSafe is nice, I'm glad my millions of usb-c power setups around the house work fine.
I have only one complaint, the notch size vs the menu bar. My OCD is itching a bit seeing the extra menu space below the notch. I'm sure either resolution changes or a utility in the future will adjust this.

Overall, what a great Mac.

The 16-inch is heavy? My 17-inch 2011 MBP is 6.6 pounds. It is well worth lugging around.

Congratulations to all the new owners. It is the beginning of a wondrous journey for you as you explore and enjoy the depths of your new machine. Hopefully it is powerful enough to pass to someone younger in your family many years later. Even though my MBP is very much outdated now, I still enjoy using it for basic tasks.

So why buy a laptop instead of an iMac or a Mini, then? I travel 40% of the year for work, and my MBA is with me anywhere I go. Even when it's not in my hands it is in my bag on my shoulder, and after crossing major airports, traversing hotels, walking down streets etc for 140+ days out of the year ever. ounce. counts.
Generally people who buy portable equipment like a laptop do so because they NEED them to be portable, and in that regard the smaller and lighter something can be, the better.
So when you're looking at comments that mention the size and weight of these new models, understand your reaction is in the minority.

I buy a laptop because of portability. To use a computer anywhere, which I use on the go all the time.

I understand the smaller and lighter the better.

These are powerful pro machines designed and manufactured to be portable.

Why complain? Just stick with the Air.

I’m curious why all the pros that have been asking for an HDMI port and SD card reader are totally cool with the inferior HDMI 2.0 vs 2.1, and having a slow SD card port on a $6K machine? The current Apple TV has HDMI 2.1. I find it impossible to believe that the hardware in these machines are incapable of making this work.

Exactly. They are still light and portable enough, for what you get in return. Dell XPS 15 and 17 have similar wights (the 17 is quite heavier actually). And as I said multiple times: The first generation Retinas were never considered as "too heavy". The new 14" weights like the older 13" and the 16" is just slightly above the old 15". You get more screen on both, too. No reason to complain. These are very capable Pro devices.

This had been explained numerous times as well, but I will do it again:
  • It's just 'inferior' to something which barely anyone needs (120Hz on a TV at home / hotel, or business monitor / projector is overkill nonsense. For that you can still use your three TB4)
  • UHS-II (300Mb/s) is not slow. UHS-III cards don't even exist, and even if so they would be ridiculously priced
  • The hardware is indeed limited because the lanes' bandwidth is limited to 40Gbit/s (and HDMI 2.1 is 48Gbit)
  • Return of 'legacy' is about the convenience of plug & play without error-prone dongles. USB-C only was silly.
  • Stop this "$6k machine" argumentation. Starting price is $2k. Barely anyone goes fully max with 8TB SSD

I also found a lot of ghosting which surprised me: wasn't Promotion suppose to resolve that issue? I honestly couldn't tell the difference between 120hz on these panels vs the old ones

Not complaining, I'm answering your implied question in regards to why anyone would bring up weight as a consideration.

The R23 score is mildly disappointing. About on par with a 5900HX.

I suppose I was expecting around the 15-16k mark.

Ah well, 5900HX performance with zero/very low fan noise sounds good to me. I had a 5900HX RB14 and I had to gimp it by disabling boost because it was constantly trying to levitate off my desk.

Surprised at all these posts looking for flaws.

Best laptop I've ever owned. Reminds me of my 2013 MBP - although possibly slightly heavier (14").

Keyboard is fantastic. Screen is outstanding. Can't say I've noticed any of these stutter / flicker issues others are posting about.

This is one of those laptops that nails virtually everything. Its literally unbeatable.

I have literally never in my life seen a community of people so obsessively driven to find anything to complain about. It's bordering on pathological.
Yeah, and the thing is all their bitching makes Macs cost more!
I could do without the mini LED, and the 120 hz screen. And people complain about the notch.
Please help me baby Jesus.

well It makes sense doesn't it? Why don't people that are concerned with weight buy the M1 air?
I have it and its super fast. I suppose it you are doing heavy video stuff.
Oh well there are always some that will complain.

Battery life should be better too?

Can't wait for my MAX 16". Middle of November because of the BTO 64GB RAM.
It looks like Apple nailed on this one. I only hope I could afford an XDR display, but I don't feel paying the price of two MBPs for it. Please bring a cheaper version.

I feel that.

I wish they would sell just the 4.5K monitor aspect of the M1 iMac. I’d buy a silver one in a second.

I feel you. It's really bad when you have to wait the whole day for the courier. If you have an AppleStore near, then it's always better to just buy with AppleStore pick up. If of course you don't have the option, then you are stuck. Apple also doesn't allow for others to receive the package. You have to sign the delivery..
Exactly, it's now almost 8 PM, UPS was supposed to have delivered it at the latest at 7 PM. I do have an Apple store near me but it wasn't an option. I know it's a very first world problem but specifying some sort of delivery window of say 2 hours is entirely feasible. UPS suck and I live in one of the wealthiest places in the US, yet their deliveries are always late. I never have this problem with Fedex or USPS. I guess I should be more grateful for the fact I can afford to buy expensive Apple products and I get to live where I do and gripe less about UPS sucking.

Does Apple not have local currier from stores everywhere?

I didn’t actually know about this until today myself. I had my SO’s father receive my 16” as he lives somewhere with lower much tax than us. I was able to schedule same day delivery to him within a 3 hour window from the Apple store.

It was actually delivered by Uber Eats, lol.
