What is Apple Pages? Numbers? Keynote? FreeForm?

What is Apple Logic Pro? What is Final Cut Pro? Are these not so-called "desktop" software?

You're trying so hard to discredit a product you don't like and won't buy. Why? Move on.

You’re making ridiculous claims. Can Vision Pro run the full version of Adobe’s Creative Suite? Just one example. It is NOT a Mac. It’s basically an iPad.

God, the constant dilemma if I'm going to capture the moment with 1080p spatial video or plain 4k 60.

Can't we have an option to capture the current best of both modes?
I don't care if there will be a long background processing after the capture

Yeah I agree, imagine one of your memories as a kid being your dad staring at you with a black mask and a wide grin…
My guess is that anyone who has a lot of pictures/vidoes of themselves when they were younger, have memories of dad pointing random sized rectangles at them, some with big circles/bright lights with a wide grin! And, it’ll just be a part of what they remember.

The first version doesn’t have to become a commonplace device for the platform to ultimately end up being successful. Look at the iPhone or Apple Watch. Successful product lines always start relatively small.
Heck, look at the Mac, it’s STILL relatively small compared to the non-Mac world, even compared to recently released products like the iPad.

They "become" a shared experience; but taking photos, browsing photos, editing photos, choosing photos...that all happens individually. But I could use AVP to take and edit videos, and then show them, in 2D for those who don't have AVP. As this article explains, you can still share the videos and photos in 2D.

Again and again, you're trying so hard to discredit this product that you simply ignore those of us who have use for it. It's obsessive for a product you don't like and won't buy. Why do you care if others like it?

It isn’t about me personally.

Photos and videos are a shared experience. You’re welcome to try and rationalize that away but it’s a fact.

Photoshop on iPad

Is the full suite available today? No. But in two years? I'd bet it is.

I’m a graphic artist. From personal experience I can tell you with absolutely no reservations that the Creative Suite on iPad is nowhere near the same on Mac. If I had to use my iPad exclusively for design work I’d be out of a job ASAP.

So no, the full Creative Suite does not run on VP.

Apple is leaving billions on the table by not releasing their own standalone 2D/3D video/still camera. They are also leaving out all of those professional creatives that they still seem very eager to engage with.
Nah, the way to capture vidoes/stills such that they become usdz files capable of viewing on Vision Pro in 3D is already well defined with a lot of companies already supporting the format. By leaving money on the table for others, it guarantees a wide range of capture devices with varying feature sets and price points. Plus, everyone knows if Apple releases a device it’s VERY likely that the EU will label it as a gatekeeper device and yank all the profits out of the endeavor. :)

But, I guess that’s only IF Apple decides to release the Vision Pro and it’s App Store in the EU.

As a 3D (film) photographer myself, I can tell you the key words here are “foot and a half away” and “back of an RV”. Real 3D cameras space their lenses to match the human pupillary distance, about 3in - but the iPhone lenses are <1in. They might work well close up, but they dont have the separation to maintain it with subjects further away and the effect will be minimal.

Furthermore, the horizontal orientation will compete with the vertical that aligns with social media. Aside from a few influencers who dive in, no one who cares about sharing on social is going to give that up.

"It was so lifelike and cozy that it almost creeped me out. Why am I spying on this random family?"
Oh, Joanna. That's just you. If you can't think beyond a demo... And the "stunt" attempted at the Fall event with your handful of lightning cables you wanted to give Tim was cringe. Kudos for security blocking you from access to Tim.

What I'd like to know, if the resolution is 1080p and 30fps (presumably because of battery life, or processing power, or both), is it noticeable that it's lower-res while viewing on AVP? And then as far as the 3D, is it like the first-gen Portrait mode where it's not really that great (but eventually would get there), or is the combo of camera data from the two lenses to produce the effect more polished? (another example are Facebook 3D photos where it uses blur, but after only looking at a few, the blur becomes more distracting... which is probably why we don't see the feature being used all that much).

I’m sure this will do well, however I’m noticing something here.

We’re approaching the technology that messes with perception of reality. This product, the Vision Pro, and Google’s weird camera AI that takes pictures of moments that never happened, doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Between the two, however, Google’s is MUCH more creepy.
What is Google’s camera AI? You mean how it can remove unwanted objects from a picture?

Not sure how that is grouped with spatial video recording. I agree removing objects messes with the memory of what actually was. But spatial videos don’t do any kind of messing. It’s actually a more accurate representation of real past events than a 2D video.

So I have to wonder about the resulting video files. Do they have a complete video stream for the "left eye" and "right eye", or is it just a normal video file with depth metadata attached?
I was assuming it was like the 3DS in which there is a video stream for each eye. Since it only records in 1080p that gives the wide angle lens room to crop to roughly the same size as the normal lens.

The notions that the Vision Pro isn’t a computer are a bit farfetched. The only real thing differentiating Macs from other platforms are root access and arbitrary code execution. The industry has been gravitating away from those things for a while. The only reason Mac’s let you get deep in the nuts and bolts is that you need at least one platform to develop for all the others.

I firmly believe people are deriding this product’s technology and features as a way to express discontent with the price. This is the first computing platform in a looong time that is inaccessible to most people. Apple products are expensive, but the Vision Pro is unique that the platform is prohibitively expensive. I can’t afford a Mac Studio, but my trusty M1 MacBook Air gives me full access to the Mac platform. The disparity between people who love the Vision Pro and hate the Vision Pro is something I’ve not seen in 15 years of following the Apple ecosystem. iPhone was nowhere near this bad.

There are real reasons to criticize Apple for the Vision Pro. Specifically, it is a risky use of money and, more importantly, time. It’s not a guaranteed success. If it goes the way of touchbar, this is a massive failure with deep consequences. But vilifying Apple that spatial video is only 1080p is silly. What is your litmus test? Saying it isn’t a computer is silly. Do you really want to run a terminal in 3d. And saying it isn’t a good replacement for multiple monitors is silly. Karl Gutag of kgontech made that argument, and he knows what he’s talking about. But why put a desktop in 3d space when each app can occupy its own space?

MV-HEVC is (finally) a smart stereo video format. The second eye stream is compressed in relation to the first. Details were released at WWDC: https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2023/10071/

Agreed, but it seems like the spatial videos are just two 1080p30 streams stacked together since one stream is 65mb/sec and spatial is 130. There’s a lot of ability to compress the second stream as a delta of the first, but it doesn’t look like they’re doing that here. One of the demo attendees from this week seemed to confirm that the depth data isn’t being recorded.

Or they are taking advantage of the increased efficiency by increasing quality. When you are viewing a video on a massive (virtual) display in stereo, compression artifacts may be more noticable.

They aren't going. to be able to get this technology to a price point where mum and dad buyers will ever look at it. It's a niche product and that's fine, but it won't be the product to grow the Apple brand and generate revenue in any meaningful way. Tim is running out of time as he can only nickel and dime the Apple range for so much extra revenue and the yearly cadence of products and software designed to increase buy in among customers is clearly causing a lot of strain with the engineers and software teams and I don't think that is going to be sustainable long term either. He needs the next big thing product to captivate the mainstream market and so far, he hasn't found it. All Apples mainstream products have reached a level of maturity that they have transitioned to commodity status. Not actually a bad thing, but in the wonderful world of American business culture, just doing an excellent job isn't enough and executives pay is built around bonuses from ever increasing revenue. Apple isn't failing, but Apple is becoming a mature company and I can't see anything Apple is doing, that's going to change Apples future from one of just doing really well in a saturated market that has enough of anything Apple offers and isn't interested in wanting to grow demand more.

Yes, this could be it, or it could also be that the compression tools aren’t quite ready yet, or aren’t efficient enough for live recording, so for now at least, they’re just using separate streams.

However, the next version of Compressor will have the ability to make 3D deliverables for the iTunes Store; this was announced at Apple Park as part of a presentation in the FCP Creative Summit. Maybe videos made in Compressor will be more efficiently encoded?

Either way, the standard is capable so there’s a better chance of this format taking off. Looking forward to an iPhone-based 3D player though.
