Blah. Anyone else tired of continually missing the 3 GHz mark? Every new core change lowers frequency =/ We're at 32 nm now (...started at 90 nm on Pentium M) and STILL are hovering around 2.66 max =\

It almost seems reminiscent of the PPC days.

why do you want it to hit 3 ghz? you would be a fit candidate for the megapixel war that digital cameras are playing nowadays.

Blah. Anyone else tired of continually missing the 3 GHz mark?

Apple has been selling 3,06ghz laptops since June 2009...

And 3,06ghz iMacs since April 2008...

So WTF are you talking about? The 3 ghz mark has not been "continually missing"...and I think it will be missing only in the first months of this new 32nm adventure....

Since that value includes the GMCH, it's not far from the 25 W TDP of the regular MBP CPUs.

I'd like to see that too.

So you think 10W are a non issue for a notebook? It makes a whole lot of difference. It's +10W + intel crappy igfx. Not a good deal imo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Arrandale.22_.28ultra-low_voltage.3B_32_nm.29

To me the more interesting detail is the ultra low voltage i7 variant. At only 18w TDP besides being an Air candidate in 1Q2010 (January) it becomes a candidate for a SSD tablet as well.

Core i7-640UM
1200 MHz 2.26 GHz
500 MHz
2 x 256 KB
4 MB
DMI 9x
2 x DDR3-1066
18 W
µPGA-989
Q1 2010
$305

ATNN?

They have some fabulous power cpus from pa semi that will go into the tablet. Far better in terms of power management than anything intel has or will have in the foreseeable future.

All the more so since the tablet will run a modified iphone os that apple use their custom made cpus. They won't be matched by anything anyone else will have on the market in terms of sheer performance and economy. Even arm cortex. The guys at pa semi had better power efficiency than intel four years go. No wonder they were a defence contractor. Imagine what they will have now.

They're not really 10W of difference, coz 25W was only the CPU but you had to add the controller (more Watts...) and the GPU (more more Watts..)...

Instead, in a 35W Arrandale you got everything (memory controller, IGP)...

That's what iMacmatician was trying to say...

Hopefully a new, fast ATI 4000 & 5000 series and not some renamed, 2 year old, bargain bin $50 Nvidia joke.

Why don't you just go over to that jokers site engadget and post man if you think the current nvidia line up in macbooks are a joke. I am sure you ll find a lot of like minded folk there to commiserate.

But please stop busting our balls here, this is an apple forum, if you think apple make joke products, then get out.

Cool but no thanks

I just got a new MBP 17 2.8 and the speed is good but then I put an Intel X-25 SSD in it and now it's so fast that I can't see any processor benefit. I have 8 GB RAM and when the SSD's get faster and bigger what else more would you need? My main thing is hard drive space. Thinking about putting a drive in the optical bay using the kit from macupgrades.com.

I showed someone how fast it is by loading 30 programs in a row in about 30 seconds. It's amazing!

The quad processor is good for servers but not needed on a MBP unless it saves power and generates less heat maybe. I guess it would also be good for heavy virtual computing (VMWare, Parallels, etc). My processors kick up to over 50% running VMWare and Ubuntu Linux Mint. Windows 7 gets up over 80% so yeah if you use a VM then the quad is good.

If Apple comes out with a MBP without the CD/DVD and room for 3 SSD's (you can fit 3 in there) then I will sell mine and get one in about a year.

Now that Apple owns P.A. Semi, hopefully things will come to fruition.

It will be very exciting to see what they come up with. Let's face it, the intel transition has been great but it's taken away the thrill of having our own cpu in the macworld. Plus what makes it even more exciting for these pa semi chips is that what with apple's well know secrecy we don't know anything as yet whilst in the x86 world we get all the scoops well in advance.

I understand that but according to what I have read still the 35W arrandale with the igfx is worse off than the TOTAL previous thermal envelope.

And what is more the previous tdp included quality nvidia gfx not the intel crap. So you can't even compare it really because intel has not shrunk and fitted an nvdia gfx in the die, but they've shrunk and fitted on of their own.

And another important point I have asked elsewhere:

Are these intel igfx open cl compatible? I don't think they are, and if so that is a big blow to snow leopard. I haven't heard anyone else mention this, which to me is crucial.

People who got one of these for Christmas (or whatever holiday, Hanukah etc.) are gonna be pissed...

"A new computer for Christmas? Gee, thanks a lot!"

Anyone getting a computer in that way either (a) won't give a damn or ... get a slap. From me.

Dear Apple, for those of us that work hard to pay for new machines, please make one, or some, or all of these magical, never-gonna-happen things happen:

13" matte option
Dual-GPU on 13"
15" MacBook
1680x1050 on 15" MBP
No matte tax!
Lighter 15" and 17" models.. don't care too much about thin, light is good though. Since MBP went unibody they got heavier, things are going backwards!
ExpressCard returns to 15" MBP (don't personally use it atm, but appreciate its flexibility)
Price reductions (SSD, processor speed bumps etc)

So it's not worth it, waiting for the next MBP's updates? Seeing they won't offer much performance gain over the current lineup?

This late in the game I still advise waiting - if anything, because otherwise you're paying the same price you would have 6 months ago. Wait for the new models to drop and see the value shift around.

For the first time in three or four years, I would prefer a desktop

I've had a long post of personal dissatisfaction and quality issues here, but now I cut the long story short.

Now I am just sick of these beach balling craps. I can live with constant fan noise, overheating, even with CPU whine... But when an expensive computer is hesitating with basic browsing, that is unacceptable.

My advice would be: wait, until Apple pulls itself together. Microsoft had, a Windows 7 machine is still an option. Or Psystar with an OS X retail disc. Or, perhaps in January or in the following version of that computer, a faster MacBook Pro with post-C2D.

I have to stop now - my head hurts from the high-pitched noise coming from the left side of my MBP. 4 months old, nice...

Any chance of one these babies end up in the Mac Mini? At least as a BTO option? Or does the nVidia card makes this an impossibility? If they have to redesign the inside of the Mini with the new socket/motherboard, we're gonna be waiting for a while as it is probably not a top priority in Cupertino...

Great timing
I am about to upgrade my 3 years old MBP anyway. I really hope they going back to aluminum enclosure all over laptop and the same color of keyboard.
I couldnt agree more. I am more of a fan of that generation keyboard for the laptop.
funny, i was just on my younger brother's silver-keyed mbp the other day and the lighting in his room made it really hard to distinguish between the key color and the backlighting. even when you know how to type, it's nice to be able to make out all of the characters at first glance.

i definitely prefer the black keys -- good contrast day or night.
