Bolded:

Regardless, most consumers don’t. prices of smart phones are too expensive for the general consumer, which in some respects, it’s better to wait mid-year to upgrade for a cycle, because ‘last year’ smart phones typically are slashed through carrier promotions.
This is probably especially true of mini users. I had my 6s for nearly 5 years then bought a 12 mini. I have a phone that fits in my pocket and does what I need it to do.

I presume since the 12 mini is still available, at least the 13 mini will remain available, whether it’s highlighted on the front page of the iPhone site or buried somewhere like the 12 mini is now is the question.

These bumps are really naff and make it look like very little effort has went into the design.

Good points! Given the comments here and elsewhere, including humorous put downs of the look, it's clear that lots of us agree with you!

One of my favorites:

That's not a bump, it's a backpack for your phone.
🎒 📱 😎

Apple prides itself on the elegance of its design, but this, like the notch, are a departure from that.

It’s a bad design, not a debate.

Agreed. Snarky put downs that it's just “your personal opinion” miss the point — and overlook just how many people share your view!

Apple apologists — not that there are any on MR — need to recognize the lack of grace and disruption of simple lines in the current design — not to mention the wobble the bump produces!

In any case, the ancient Romans were right:

De gustibus non est disputandum.

USB-C would be the most welcome addition. It lets me carry one cable that’ll do my laptop, camera, tablet, console, and phone.

While agree USB-C would be nice, how would Apple spin this?

Would moving away from Lightning be an admission that they had it wrong for so many years?

A photo claiming to show molds of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 series models has appeared online, offering another preview of the relative sizes of the rumored devices.

iphone-14-molds.jpeg

It's worth bearing in mind that the molds shown in the image sourced from Weibo have likely been made for use in the production of third-party iPhone cases rather than actual handsets. Still, they do appear to line up with unconfirmed details we've been hearing over recent months, particularly with regard to the dimensions of the devices.

The first notable difference in the lineup is the lack of an iPhone mini model. iPhone sizes are changing in 2022, and Apple is eliminating the 5.4-inch iPhone as it turned out to be unpopular with customers.

After seeing lackluster iPhone mini sales, Apple is offering larger iPhone sizes for its flagship devices: A 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 models are expected to look like the iPhone 13 models with the same flat-edged design.

Slight camera bump size changes are expected across the lineup. According to ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max schematics shared by Max Weinbach, the camera bump on the 2022 high-end ‌iPhone‌ will be 4.17 mm thick, or 0.57 mm larger than the bump on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

The space that the bump occupies on the back of the ‌‌iPhone‌‌ will also increase in size by about 5% in each dimension, going from the current width of 35.01 mm to 36.73 mm and height of 36.24 mm to 38.21 mm. We've yet to learn what the relative changes on the standard iPhone 14 models could be.

These camera bump changes are also expected to usher in improvements to the Ultra Wide camera. Rumors have suggested the iPhone 14 Pro models could see significant improvements to the wide-angle camera and updates to the telephoto lens.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the 2022 Pro iPhone models will feature a 48-megapixel Wide camera, which would be a major improvement over the current 12-megapixel camera, and 8K video recording capabilities.

While the image only shows the rear of the devices, the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to eliminate the notch in favor of some combination of a circular hole-punch cutout for the camera paired with a pill-shaped cutout. This change is expected to be limited to the Pro models, while the standard iPhone 14 models will continue to feature the notch.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 14 models at an event that's likely to be held in September 2022, if Apple follows previous launch timelines. Be sure to check out our dedicated guides for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro for much more information on what we know.

So basically I’ll be keeping my 12 Pro max.

Usb c….. serves what purpose. I can already quick charge my phone in 15 min.
I have to admit, it does feel like the 14 Max was deliberately made to not appeal to owners of the 13 Pro Max. It’s not getting the hole punches, even though all 13 models got the smaller notch. It’s not getting a new SoC, even though all iPhones have gotten a new SoC in the past. If anything, it seems like a downgrade due to no 120Hz or telephoto. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised; after all, it’s not a direct successor.
it’s still to close to the 12 pro max. No reason for the 14 to exist.

By adding USB-C to our pro line of iPhones you can now connect directly to your mirrorless camera and use your iPhone as an external screen or to ingest footage faster than ever before making the new iPhone Pro truly the most pro iPhone we have made <~ something along these lines that only sells you on the pros and not the cons. Though there are no cons to dropping lightning.

Would look a lot better with the cameras flush. These bumps are really naff and make it look like very little effort has went into the design. I am sure no one would complain about a slightly thicker phone that has more battery life or better cooling.
Strong disagree. Having the bump allows the camera assembly to take advantage of a case’s thickness without making the overall package thicker.

Probably the same way when they introduced the Lightning cable. Times change and need to move to something more modern. The 30-pin cable was nine years old when Lightning was introduced. We're going on 10 years with the Lightning cable now. It's hardly a failure, but it's time for something that can handle faster data transfer speeds...and use the same plug almost every other electronic device uses.

Whelp, the one group of people who loudly exclaimed they still wanted a small iPhone didn't show up to buy them once Apple finally gave in. Apple uncharacteristically gave in to loud blog voices that in no way represent the real world, and they lost as a result.

Next, they pivot to the next loud group: "I want big without paying for performance too."

We'll see how that works. My guess is the 6.7" non-Pro will flounder like the mini.

Wha?

Had what wrong? There was no better alternative when Apple developed Lightning. And it became very widely used because Apple devices are very widely used. Today, there is very little reason not to use USB-C except pissing off the majority of the iPhone market that doesn't know or care about USB-C at all...which is in itself very much a reason.

I‘m wondering why those camera humps are never centered? Maybe to maximize battery size? Either way, i‘d rather have a worse camera and no hump instead of that huge bulge for what is essentially still a crappy phone camera with tiny lenses on tiny sensors. (but I realize, that for people who don‘t have or don‘t want to carry a proper camera, this is still the better option). I‘d take a thicker phone with a larger battery as well. otoh, if that lump continues to grow, it will eventually become the defining element of those phones and transform them from phones with an ungainly bulge into some lenses with a screen attached.

I hope I can get the 13 mini for a discount or used after these are released.

I'm watching for 13 mini refurbs and need one for a trip soon. Didn't jump on them at release time because the A15 spec bump was such a disappointment, but my iPhone 8 battery is on its last legs now.

Would happily take a 13 mini 256gb for $700ish (15% off) either via outlet or brand new if they discount it. The problem is the 14's won't be out until November and I really need a phone by July-ish for some travel.

What case?
Any case, as they all have some thickness and a cutout for the camera bump. Taking advantage of that thickness gives the camera module more room while keeping the phone thinner overall.

I’m aware, of course, that not all cases have the same thickness, but most have at least a couple of mm, and it makes sense to use that space for the extra thickness the camera module requires.

People weren’t buying the iPhone mini because they called it Mini. Drop the word Mini from the name and just call it the iPhone and people will buy it.

That’s probably why they called it the mini. They’d rather sell more expensive phones. That the mini didn’t “sell well” probably wasn’t an accident or surprise... They’d rather sell more expensive models.

There's more to it than just charging your phone. It would have faster transfer speeds for those that record a lot of video. (The new ProRes video is great, but is painfully slow to transfer.) Also, finally using a standard cable/plug that nearly every every electronic device uses these days. The iPhone is the oddball out. Everything I have uses USB-C (Nintendo Switch, MacBook, iPad, GoPro, drone, battery bank, active stylus pen, etc).
