So the new iPhone scratches easily? Shows wear after light use? Maybe if you put it in a plastic case it would protect it. But how funny is that? All the bashing on plastic phones around here and yet they hold up better than the aluminum?

I really wish it was made of IRON instead of ALUMINUM so I could say... "Oh the iron-y".

Thanks folks, I'll be here all night (mostly because I'm concerned about the black finish).

Pocket Lint Review by Stuart Miles

- "It is now chamfered and while that looks pretty, we've already noticed that on the black model the edge has started to wear, revealing the shiny silver aluminium metal underneath the "slate" coloured coating and, indeed, we've witnessed it on two separate models, ruling out a fluke manufacturing error."

This is what concerns me most... surprised no one else mentioned it. Black edge wearing off??? That'll look nice...

Although a nice upgrade over my 4S, 5 seems quite predictable.

However, there was a comment in the article that the battery would last at most a day with the average user. Ummmmm, my 4S lasts at least 2 full days with me using it for a few calls and tons of email/web surfing on my WIFI.

If I bought the 5 and it only lasted 24 hours or less, I'd return it immediately.

Anyone else know more details on the battery life besides what Apple claims/promises?

The reviews seem to say the battery life on the 5 exceeds that on the 4s on the same tests. So don't go by "24 hours" because of course it all depends on use.

Apple should consult with Surefire, the finish, coatings on their lights takes years to wear off.

Nice reviews. I saw that CNET gave it an Editor's Choice but only 4 stars, which is also what the S3 got. The RAZR MAXX got 4.5, for whatever reason.

The text of CNet's review is pretty flattering, though. Mossberg's review is positive, but he's negative on Maps, which isn't much of a surprise to me. Hopefully Google is quick to come out with a new version of Maps so we can get the best of both worlds.

I'm guessing it's because CNET is catering to the Android fan base which has grown more vocal than Apple devotees of late, and they don't want a million emails about how they're paid off by Apple to write the reviews.

Is that why the video shots of the back in the Engadget review look awful? This really does not bode well for my black iPhone 5...

There is going to be issues in every thing that comes along...Remember at the end of the day just a dam phone....I am excited about it like everyone else, but after about 2 weeks no doubt excitement going to wear off...Just a phone that still will access my mail, my text and everything else other phones will do.

I already ordered a black one... that bit about the finish coming off is really concerning. Hopefully that's an isolated issue or maybe just an issue with a small batch of the early review phones... I guess we'll see.

Be interesting to see what the new maps app is like tomorrow. I'm in Vancouver and I use the transit schedule feature in the current app extensively, so hopefully that works as well in the new app, or if it doesn't, google doesn't waste any time in releasing their own app.

What I love is seeing how great the battery life is. Wasn't it just a couple days before the announcement the battery leak was leaked out and everyone was saying it would have poor battery life. Yet I kept on saying that battery life would be improved really that Apple is not that stupid to create a LTE device to kill battery life.

Where are all the people that said that battery life would be absolutely terrible on this device and didn't trust Apple to make software or hardware optimizations?

Likewise, might be keeping my phone sealed and switching to white to avoid headaches.

Dare I say....
Steve wouldn't have allowed this :p
But it's true, if the black starts to wear off in a day, there are serious manufacturing issues and I can't just believe apple overlooked it

You should not really pay attention to these first reviews from "preferred" reviewers. They never report any issues with new iPhones. They did not notice a problem with iPhone 4 antenna/signal or iPhone 4S abysmal battery life (when it was just released).

As much as I want the new iPhone 5 in black I'm going to hold off till the iPhone 5s comes out next yr mainly due to see if they can improve the black coating durability on the next phone. Plus, by then it will seem like a big leap for me being I have Iphone 4 now and we also won't have LTE until the end of this yr or early next yr.

Finish should not start to do that within 1 use, I don't care if this is 'common' with anodized, maybe over time not 1 use.

They should have put a tiny green LED light next to the front camera that turns on whenever in use.

I would assume that the aluminum on Macbooks is anodized itself, because it's so consistent in color.

you can anodize it and also add a brushed finished to it. That brushed finished that Apple uses also covers up scratches. Polished finished show scratches so easily no matter what. They look great and shiny at the beginning but I think long term they look like crap.

Any pictures from pocket- to show the black iPhone problem you guys are talking about ?

Or video?
