What a bunch of spoilt brats who complain about every apple product. ten years ago a 5k monitor for under $1k would be unimaginable. now people are complaining about the bezel and how Apple's moves "effects me professionally".

if you can't get work done with this level of gear you are like a carpenter who blames his tools.

No one says you can't get work done, it is just ugly.

THIS is what Apple displays looked 10 years ago. How come the ones that we have to use now look ten times uglier?

"In the creative field, Image is important." Gimme a break. I work in "the creative field' and if your business depends on the color/size of your bezel or monitor design you have a bigger problem. I'd rather show clients my work with an amazing 5k display and wide-gamut color than crapple cinema display with limited color gamut.

Why does it have to be one or the other ?

Imagine an amazing 5k display and wide-gamut color housed in an impressive, thoughtful design.

You know, something that is of high quality AND looks good in your office. That's all we're asking for. Is that so unreasonable?

If most of you use clamshell mode 90%+ of the time you should get an iMac or Mac Pro (like me) and use an iPad for on the go or a cheap old MacBook Air. Also no need for touch bar or extra ports or battery life so why all the complaining.

I should make a Kickstarter. One for a piece of plastic that snaps onto the bottom to make it visually balanced, and another for an expensive aluminum enclosure that snaps around the whole thing, lol.

Unfortunately, the same people would complain that there's plastic under the aluminum. I'm surprised no one's complained that:
(1) the monitor requires two cables (power and TB3)
(2) has multiple connections, 3 USB C ports (because when i add a cable it's going to decrease the aesthetic value)
(3) the cables are colored xxxxx (fill in your own color)
(4) packaging (who ever receives one, please provide a full, in-depth review of the packaging with pictures) i would like to complain about this as well

Because the monitor is not an Apple product. And, much like the mouse in your image, the new LG monitor is the same color.

Yep, got both delivered by DHL yesterday too (Rotterdam, The Netherlands). For the record, I ordered the display last Tuesday and the MBP late November.

Runs Numbers like a champ! ;-)

It definitely lacks the Apple-esque aesthetics. But it's all that's out there now I guess.

Apple no longer wants to be an iconic brand on a desktop. No glowing Apple, no Apple display... pretty soon you won't know if it's a Mac even.

That's what is really surprising about this -- the display is the part of a desktop setup that's most visible. For years, Apple tried to get their displays into every TV show they could because of the advertising benefit. Now, they are strangely content with having people not even know what computer is being used. And that will be true everywhere this display is used. It's like they simply gave up on a giant part of their overall product marketing.

That said, from a technical/functional standpoint, this looks great, and the (discounted) price is attractive. The lack of cable management is rather astonishing, but I would consider this since there is no Apple-branded product that does what this does. I guess that's where we are.

You are free to tattoo the Apple logo on your forehead if you want other people to know just what a big fan boy you are.

So someone who washes their car or showers every day must be a fanboy because they care about personal and property appearance? How many broken down cars and large appliances do you have in your front yard? Oh none? So maybe aesthetics do matter.

So much this. If people could beat the dead horse a bit more on that top bezel... I bought one without hesitation. It's not ideal, but it's a 5k monitor for under a grand that works seamlessly with the MBP and charges it. All I'm going to be looking at is the gorgeous display.

Oh, and I'm loving my MBP over the last two days since it finally arrived. Noticed one glitch when streaming videos while f.lux was enabled. Turning it off resolved it, and it's back on now and working fine. Everything else is smooth and as expected. And I even have the "glitchy" 460.

ill stick with my 2008 24" LED ACD instead.
I have 3 30" cinema displays! People are getting rid of them. I am using 2 and one is an spare a friend of mine is canibalizi
His rant was expressing his concern that the Apple executive seems to not give a rats about a coherent mac setup anymore.
This LG monitor screen is fine, the ports are fine, the design is downright ugly.
So this Monitor is all function and no form.
The MBPs on the other hand, prioritise form over function.

The old Apple would ensure that form followed function in a wonderful way. If Apple couldn't be bothered producing its own monitor anymore, the least Ive could have done is help LG make a better design.
This is why long term Apple fans are not happy.

I am a girl.

I do like the aesthetics of Apple monitors. (I have a 27" LED Cinema Display at home.)

Two things though:

1. Apple's monitor adjustments have always sucked. Said beautiful monitor instantly looks more pedestrian when sitting on top of all but the most expensive aluminum stands. (And VESA mounting? Hello adapter!)

2. I can't imagine I'll be yearning for the Apple aesthetic when staring at a 5K display. I don't care if it's in cardboard, it's a bloody 5K. My work doesn't happen on the bezel.

The LG will fit in well with my Eizo and NEC monitors for color critical work.

I guess you should write to LG, Eizo and NEC and complain about their bezels in case Apple decides to go with them in future 5k monitors.

Junior web designer is creative field.

I can understand where people are coming from when complaining about the appearance - this simply cannot compared to the aesthetics of the old Apple displays.
I previously used a rMBP hooked into an external monitor but couldn't justify the cost of an Apple display and it constantly bothered me that the monitor was "ugly".

I now use an iMac as my main machine and an rMB as a portable and every time I sit down at my desk, the iMac brings a smile to my face because it's so damned attractive!

Yes, it may be a shallow way of thinking and no, it doesn't affect functionality but Apple has always been about making stuff that looks better and less generic and while this new display isn't Apple branded, it's the "official" display for their gorgeous new laptops and IMO it should be better presented.

If it doesn't bother you then that's fine and I'm sure it's a great monitor but for me it's just a little sad that there isn't a real Apple monitor any more

1. I'll take this Cinema Display with an Aluminium stands (and they're not that expensive) any over this ugly thing any day.)

2. here's the thing though : the monitor is still sitting in the room and it's just ugly. In this way you can also justify an ugly Laptop, cause you're just looking at the screen. Heck, you could justify driving an ugly car cause you don't see it. It is not about the usefulness of pretty products.

The Apple I loved was the one that kept trying to make the best products possible. And it is simple: - pretty Monitor is just a better product all things being equal.

I guess some people would prefer to sit in their rooms and admire the bezels in the ancient 2011 thunderbolt cinema displays and work with limited gamut (76.1% of argb gamut) at lower 2560x1440 resolution than deal with a 5k surrounded by non-apple bezel.

I ordered the 5k to go with my 13" TB i5 8GB ram.

Now I'm wondering if I should cancel the 5k and wait for the new iMac. It would be an extra $1000-$1500 over what I'd pay just for the 5k monitor, but it would be a second computer which I'd hope would be a lot more powerful than the laptop.

What are your thoughts on the next iMac? I would hope it would have a much better GPU that would run quiet under load, but given how Apple wants to make everything so thin, perhaps the next iMac with a GPU will run just as loud under load as the new laptops. I'd like a nice GPU but find the fans under load in laptops too loud.

If anyone has gotten the new 5k and used it with a 13" TB MBP, is there any lag/choppyness using regular applications like safari, photos, etc? We've had some impressions from 15" with GPU users but nothing from 13" non-discrete gpu.

Thanks

If the old design was better, why change to uglier one.

Anyway, its nothing to complain about, I am sure there are better looking alternatives out there isn't there?
Plus its an LG monitor not an Apple one.

Your argument couldn't be any more weaker if you tried. 10 years ago (2006) a decent 40" at 720p tv was on sale for $3000

I kind of want one, but to use the bigger screen you have to either give up on the Touch Bar controls (which I am getting used to) or else actually use the MacBook Pro as the keyboard for the 5k display. I guess to do that you'd probably set them side to side. I wonder whether if you put the LG display as low as it can get, if it would be comfortable/possible to do that.

Are others planning to just use a standard Bluetooth keyboard and mouse?

I've used external monitors with laptops for decades. I never use an external keyboard. I place the laptop right in front of the external monitor. Most monitors I have used are tall enough that the laptop doesn't really obstruct view of the external monitor. And there is a minimal amount of looking back and forth.

I am unsure why a person's opinion on how a product looks should be invalidated by what the product does. No, nobody is saying they "can't get work done" on this screen. They'rejust saying it doesn't look as nice as they wanted it to look I don't disagree. I am sure he screen looks absoutely amazing when in use. My prius gets incredible gas malieage too. Doesn't mean it doesn't look like shjit (and yes, we have a prius lol). Call a duck a duck. Physically speaking, this isn't the prettiest design. Period.

Can't wait to get mine. First time with a laptop/external monitor setup. Wonder if I'll want a separate keyboard and trackpad rather than the one on my MacBook Pro (as pictured in the article).

Waiting for mine as well. I've used my previous macbook pros in clamshell mode with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse, but that seems a waste with the touch bar. I'm not sure how I'll configure this next setup.

Just amazing to read the comments calling people "spoiled" and ridiculous for "caring how a $1,000 monitor looks".

You stare at it all day - You see it from all sides - It's essentially the "face" of the computing experience and this LG collaboration with Apple is a huge step backwards from what one has come to expect when invested in the Apple experience.

If you think it looks "fine" - More power to you, but please try to understand how deeply disappointing this monitors aesthetics are in the context which are speaking in here.

To many of us, these are incredibly sad times.
The Apple we always loved is punting, one painful step at at time, on the beautiful ecosystem components.

I couldn't see much extra value in the new 2016 MBP 15" since I use my laptop 90% of the time closed with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Maybe I'm not Apples MBP professional target but I was hoping this year for a reason to upgrade my setup. Maybe next year... :-(

I'm in the same boat, but am going to try and use it with the lid open. I wish they had updated the iMacs. I would have gotten one of those.
