The issue is with saying all an iOS developer uses is Xcode.. Yes it is in no way capable of using that power, but using a combination of tools can use a lot more of it. (and yes, the GPU's will be mostly useless.) Either way, its his money/machine, so it doesn't matter to us, eh?

Yeah of course, I am not disputing his buy just wondering about the uses of this machine in that aspect.

I dunno if I agree with that. XCode definitely takes advantage of grandcentral (multiple cores) and the simulator will be MUCH faster with better graphics cards.

Yeah, but 12 cores? Also, how does a GPU help with the simulator? I thought that was a mostly CPU related thing.

Well yeah 12 cores is insane and won't do anything for Xcode. As for graphics cards, it uses the same core graphics framework as iOS. It's not so much simulated as actually rendering using open gl (you'd be surprise how powerful ipad and iPhone graphics chips are). Although iMac would be better for that. So yeah, in hind sight I agree with you.

I do think it sucks that the nMP is so focused on video editing. I mean I use fusion to program windows, Mac, Linux, and do enterprise reporting as well and need the power to run sap, oracle in a vm. So cores and memory is a must (which is why iMac is out).

It does make me wonder if PC would be better suited for me, but I'm so deep into the apple ecosystem and it's nice to have just one machine.

And not to mention that specced out windows machine is about the same price, if not higher, than the nMP.

Sometimes UPS shipping really sucks!! Usually, UPS is pretty good. I live in Kansas and ordered my Mac Pro which had a delivery date, per Apple, of Dec. 26th. So, I have been watching the UPS tracking and sure enough, my Mac Pro made it to Wichita, KS from Austin, TX via Mesquite, TX and Oklahoma City, OK on Tuesday, Dec 24th, which is only 3 hrs. away from where I live. So, I thought there would be no problem getting the Mac Pro today! Everything seemed to be on schedule for a Dec. 26th delivery. I mean it made it from TX to KS in less than 24 hrs! It left Austin, TX at 7:01PM on 12/23 and arrived in Wichita, KS on 12/24 at 3:34PM.

Today, the 26th, I noticed my Mac Pro via UPS had finally left Wichita, KS around 10:50AM, which seemed a little late, but I still thought there was plenty of time for a 3PM to 4PM delivery. So, a little while ago I checked the UPS tracking again and now my Mac Pro is in Kansas City, KS which is 5 hrs. away!!! So UPS drove my Mac Pro 2 to 3 hrs in the opposite direction of where it needed to go! I suppose there are trucking routes or distribution centers and all but . . .

I have ordered iPads from Apple and they were delivered in (2) days from CHINA, no less, (This was the FREE shipping from Apple) but it is going to take (5) days, to deliver a Mac Pro to Kansas from Texas which is only (2) states away, since it is obvious that I am now not going to get the Mac Pro until Friday, the 27th, at the earliest??

I realize there are others that have ordered a Mac Pro and have shipping dates in February 2014 and beyond, so sorry for the vent, but I was really looking forward to getting my hands on that Mac Pro today and now it is on a UPS Walkabout.

Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

It's not that UPS sucks. For China they use FedEx and overnight (even though it's 2 days). For the nMP they do UPS 3-day or ground. So when it says arrived at destination it really means it's on a truck on the way to destination. That's normal.

Mine was also supposed to arrive today. I'm In Stillwater OK, and my Mac Pro has been stuck in Mesquite, TX since the 24th.

Apparently UPS has had a massive meltdown with their holiday shipping, and Mesquite has been pointed out as a source of major problems.

So, it's more egg nog for me and hoping my computer is not completely lost in the mess.

Sorry, but I tend to disagree. If it takes UPS 3 days, not counting Christmas, to move a package from Wichita, KS to Hays, KS (3 hrs. away) something isn't working right. I would say there is room for improvement there.

They never do direct routes. For instance if it's 2nd day air shipping from Texas to Colorado (as an example), it will go to their sort facility in Memphis first and fly directly to Colorado after that. They cannot afford to run planes or trucks from every location direct routes to target locations. Ground works very similarly.

Kind of like if I ship from Longmont to boulder (30 min drive). It will go to commerce city first for sort and then back to boulder for delivery in 1-2 days (usually 1 business day).

All carriers work this way. Otherwise they would need hundreds of thousands of trucks and planes to go from every city to destination cities directly.

Now three days is a little too much and I'm guessing they were backed up with Holiday shipping or weather.

Wow, if a courier left a Mac Pro on my doorstep, I'd be pretty darned annoyed. That could be $10,000 work of equipment waiting to be stolen.

Or worse yet, last week FedEx delivered and left a 2nd day air Amazon package on my doorstep. So, when I got home after work, guess what, it wasn't even my package. It was for somebody else that lived down the street a ways and my address is clearly marked on my house and painted in big bright numbers on my curb!

So, I got in my car and took the package down there myself and delivered it to the right address in person. Imagine if UPS did that with a Mac Pro!! Granted, as mentioned, UPS is supposed to get a signature or a pre-signed release form taped on the door.

I could have sworn all Apple products require signature. You can waive it by signing a piece of paper and posting it on your door (apple will not be liable for loss or damage then, that's what you are actually signing). If someone takes your mac pro and UPS left it w/o signature, Apple will send another and file damage/loss with UPS and get the 10k back since UPS failed to get signature (otherwise there is no proof delivery). UPS will be in big trouble and I know for a fact Fedex cannot scan a destination package if it requires signature (their pad will not checkout the item). If they leave it at the door it will not show up as delivered.

As for Amazon products, amazon doesn't care too much for loss when it comes to missing items unless it's really high-value. I have had that happen to me and amazon sent another package and file claims with UPS. It eventually showed up (mis-delivered but someone was nice enough to send it back).

Dear haters,

I think the concept of "I can't afford something so I will trash it to feel better" only applies to people with a deep and genuine level of mental retardation. If you don't like the mac pro, it won't magically go away unless you stop searching for it online.

The problem isn't the mac pro for these people, it's themselves.

I'm wondering if someone more knowledgeable might clarify this but I was under the impression Logic Pro could potentially be able to benefit in the future from dual graphics cards if Apple were to fully support OpenCL?

Not sure if this is true or possible, but if it is, would definitely give good reason to get a Mac Pro for Logic Pro users!

This is news to me, so I am also looking forward to hearing more about this. Thanks!

So I've been lurking here for months and am finally jumping in with a post. I'm on the same boat thanks to UPS. My Mac Pro is stuck in Lenexa on it's way to Omaha. After getting up at 2:00 AM to spend 30 minutes hitting "refresh" to be one of the first to get my order in was ecstatic to see it ship... now it's a wait for UPS. Apple even sent me a nice email to tell me it's late... no @#$%!

Also got a call from OWC tonight saying my 32 GB kit that is arriving tomorrow was incorrectly programmed (1222 GHz instead of 1866 GHz) and will need to be exchanged for the proper memory. I was issued an RMA.

Never a dull moment for sure!

I do iOS development while running a VM for some development tools I can't get on osx, while running 3 displays, from a 15"rmbp (late '13 dedicated graphics, 16gb ram). Good thing about it is I can travel to the customer and display the app running across all the simulators on the same machine. Plus nothing looks better on their conference table, haha. Never even hinted at slowing down under load.

I thought someone hacked my UPS tracking when I saw your post. My UPS tracking is identical to yours. Sorta funny . . . but not really. You can clearly see when the shipment got to Kansas it slowed down to a crawl with the shipment sitting for 40 hrs. plus with no movement. I realize Christmas was in there but . . . I mean it has now been sitting in Lenexa for 5 hrs. with no movement. Now, I keep refreshing my UPS tracking every once in a while and now I am thinking if my shipment does not leave Lenexa for Salina, KS pretty soon, like it should of an hour or two ago, I may not even get my Mac Pro tomorrow which would mean it would be Monday before it shows up. A lot of my UPS Amazon shipments go through Wichita and then straight to Hays, KS for delivery but for some reason UPS sends my Mac Pro 3 hrs. in the wrong direction. Most UPS shipments sit for no more than 2 to 3 hrs. and then they are back on the road. It's not looking promising for a tomorrow delivery either. :(

As someone posted earlier, Standard Shipping was my only option when I placed my order but I would have probably sprung for 2nd Day Shipping and payed extra if I would of had that option.

I brought a small house and some Apple toys and a Kia Soul because some people spend their hard earned money in different ways. When I was a kid there were adds in comic books about how stopping smoking you could own a surf board in a year. I don't smoke because it is one of the most unhealthy things you could do to your body, period.

I recently quit smoking. after smoking for nearly 20 years... I started when I was 14 years old.

after just a few short months, Everything has changed. My endurane is up. my health is up. my weight is down, my energy levels have skyrocketed. This alone was worth quitting.

The additional pocket money is just a bonus! I wasn't what I'd call a heavy smoker. 5 packs a week was the average. at $10/ pack though, that was 50 a week, or $2,600 per year. doesn't sound like much, but that right there is almost the price of one of these.

In fact, I used the money i saved over the last few months to upgrade my computer, something i couldn't seem to affor for the last 5 years.

Right now, I've already started saving a few grand towards a cross european tour. Again, something only 1/2 year ago i could never think I could afford.

it was such a tremendous money sink.

What people have to realize it's called an Opportunity Cost. if in your mind you can justify other things besides this nMP for yourself cause of the cost, Thats fine, There's nothing wrong with that.

But if someone can justify to themselves the cost and dont feel like they're "losting out" by buying one. great!

I would love one, if it weren't for a couple technical limitations and options I dont like.

I'm hoping by V2 or V3 they make this more accessible to other "professionals" who do other tasks besides just video production.

DAT UNBOXING..

I have the strangest erection right now....

that point when you tore the plastic wrap down the side... and it made that zipper sound..

heaven...

Enjoy your computer man! that really is one sexy machine. (press photos make it look worse than it really is IMHO)

You can believe what you want. I own my own business, own my own home, and my wife does not have to work and I have kids. I did all of this with experience, skill, and without a degree.
Good for you. Hard work CAN result in a high paying job, just like a college degree CAN lead to the same. Neither is guaranteed; in fact the opposite is more common. To infer that all anyone has to do to "get rich" is just "work hard," is nonsense.

I maintain that those who have disposable income for a Mac Pro are well off compared to the majority.

Don't count on it. I had a consistently bad experience with UPS, even more often than I had a good one with Apple. 100% of the deliveries or shipping I made through them encountered problems. 100 fl_lck¡ng %. Lost packages, stolen ones, wrong tracking number sent, them saying they couldn't find the biggest mall in town, and even worse, tracking data falsification. Twice, I had to lead them in court.

They have the most un-professional deliverymen, er, uniformed thieves possible, to the point I completely ceased to do business with any company not offering an alternative to them. Even with Apple, I prefer to waste hours in traffic than to deal with that poo & pee-colored company.

Never had issues with vm's crashing after wake up? How many do you run at a time? I tried using an rMBP as my primary machine but the fans ran like crazy, and could only run 2-3 VMs (with no more than 1-2 cores at each) at a time and had to limit the memory (I generally need 8-16gb of memory).

Wow, I can see why you hate them. Sounds like USPS for me (my mail comes from neighbors, never the mailman). I guess I just know my UPS and fedex guys and they are really good at delivering. They even have my garage code so they can drop things off and not leave them on the porch. These guys have been delivering for the last 6 years, so I know them pretty well (I do a lot of shipments/pickups). Obviously this is not the norm for everyone else. Sorry to hear that. If that was me, I'd definitely ship everything to the store.

I just tried the low-end model at the Apple store:

1. The mouse pointer, controlled by a Magic Trackpad, was skipping around for some reason.
2. The Apple retail guy telling people about it was clearly enjoying his job, as I would. He seemed like someone who might be a MacRumors user.
3. It was barely giving off any air, but I only had the chance to let 4 "yes" processes run for a little bit, so I couldn't really get it hot.
4. I'm pretty sure someone bought it without knowing what it was.
5. It was so awesome-looking!
6. What the heck have they done to Final Cut Pro?

I'm not really sure where all this hatred came from for our national carriers. More often than not...92, 94, 98.3% of the time (summer '13 statistic) for delivery timing and location (without the package. Without being stolen). I've had Fed Ex break a package...like a rod that went through the packaging and in turn through a pre-amp....a $3,200 preamp. We talked to them. Got pics on delivery of pkg. pics of unit matched up with the packaging...and I took several pics packing it of its condition, etc. they required proof, but paid $3200 within the month. I've heard the same from friends that have used UPS (we're in Alaska...it's mandatory to choose a shipper). Excellent service, and if an error transpires, packaging is broken, stolen or damaged by them in some way...and you're responsible for the burden of proof which Only makes sense, they'll cover their faults. Every time. They wouldn't be in business if they didn't

I run dour VM's while editing three real time show streams of audio, and a 'tracked' (already recorded two hours ahead of real time)...all from the 4 VMs, on a pair of rMBPs. A late 2012 and late 2013. We run a country show on 11 stations from three feeds on the 2012 and feed 17 modern rock stations in real time and an hour ahead on the rMBP 2013. Never exceed 6-8GB RAM usage. Sometimes bit rare spikes to 10GB. NO issues, latency or slowdowns. Working with a 100Mb/s down, 50Mb/s up. That helps

We've used UPS @ my place of business now for 19 years. Never an issue I can recall. As always....there's the chance a bad employee reflects bad on the company. Big time, extremely successful and VERY reliable shipping service doesn't get this way by displaying the type of behavior you're speaking of consistently

As far as those concerned about pricing....a maxed out nMBP is less than a lot of software used in broadcast and visual effects, editing and programs to transcode or encode...many of the cameras, hell...there are TRIPODS that cost close to a maxxed Pro. Mics and sound recording gear, mixers, speakers...the list goes on, and even the prosumer studio these days can be a $50-100k in gear. Even audio studios....and YES! Logic WILL use the GPU system and OpenCL. Logic is going to be so powerful on this machine, not to mention your I/ O options on site, ability to travel with your machine. It should be soon too. Logic was 64bit first and it's high resolution audio mix with FCPx will be paramount. Speaking of, as an FCP 7 and Premier/A./E user....I'm throttled by the performance AND upgrades over the past 18 months. FCP is an extremely powerful editing platform now and with a couple enhancements with FCP and Logic working in Grand Central and utilizing OpenCL framework will essentially allow 1,000 tracks at once!

I was really looking forward to getting my hands on that Mac Pro today and now it is on a UPS Walkabout.

Hope it's on a delivery truck today. Keep in mind you're still incredibly lucky to have yours shipped so quickly. Maybe you should invest in a lottery ticket :)
