And in many cases knowing the right people and/ or being lucky. Hard work is obviously the best way to getting rich but not a guarantee.

Smiles............ Old saying are very true.

It's not what you know, it's who you know :D

Lady: Do you smoke?
Man: Yes
Lady: How many packs a day?
Man: 3 packs
Lady: How much per pack?
Man: $10
Lady: And how long have you been smoking?
Man: 15 years
Lady: So 1 pack costs $10 and you have 3 packs a day which puts your spending each month at $900. In one year it would be $10,800, correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: If in 1 year you spend $10,800 not accounting for inflation, the past 15 years puts your spending at $162,000, correct?
Man: Correct
Lady: Do you know that if you hadn't smoked, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 15 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?

Man: Do you smoke?
Lady: No
Man: Where's your Ferrari then?

I brought a small house and some Apple toys and a Kia Soul because some people spend their hard earned money in different ways. When I was a kid there were adds in comic books about how stopping smoking you could own a surf board in a year. I don't smoke because it is one of the most unhealthy things you could do to your body, period.

Mac Pro -

Mac Pro ships without a keyboard or mouse, allowing you to use ones you already own or buy any you choose.

Wow apple is going to allow me to use a keyboard and mouse of my own & all for $3,000.00 and up.
Stupid

I purchased on the morning of the 19th and was told it would ship by Jan 6. On my account it said it would ship on the 27th (store pickup). I hope they have it this week but expect it next week.

Then don't buy it. Sheesch. Even intelligent people have stupid thoughts. But the intelligent person keeps it to himself. You aren't one of those (the intelligent people, that is).

----------

How did this go from 1st Mac Pro's showing up to a pissing match about being rich.

Because in almost every thread, you can count on someone displaying their lack of intelligence. The internet has made it very easy for anyone to display their stupidity.

Riiiight.

You can believe what you want. I own my own business, own my own home, and my wife does not have to work and I have kids. I did all of this with experience, skill, and without a degree. I am educated but I don't have a piece of paper that says so. I started my business a little over 5 years ago, not "back in the day". I'm not saying you shouldn't get a degree because my kids will be attending college. I'm just saying there is a ton of money out there to be made if you work hard. You just have to be smart, have skills, and know how to capitalize on them. Of course, just as school is not for everyone, neither is trying to be an entrepreneur.

you can configure them with mouse and keyboard at time of purchase if you like.

Mac Pro = Overpriced overkill in the form of a black trash can from Bed Bath and Beyond.

People keep posting this kind of junk are looking dumber and dumber. If you want to make a point that something is "over pried" you have to find and eagle of the same thing selling elsewhere for less.

As for the shape. In 1984 (or was in 82?) IBM sold their first "PC" and it set the standard for location o disk drives, power supply and card slots. A few years later some one stood one on end and called it a "tower". It used the same exact power supply, card slots and so on, it was just standing on one end. Next they rotated the disk drives 90 degrees and thus ended innovation for 20+ years.

Some people forget, or aren't old enough to remember is that before that first IBM PC small and large computers all have different shapes and more interreestig designs and did not all look alike. Then after IBM showed their very low-cost design, that was all that mattered, cost. And we have decides for ugly square boxes. But maybe we are free of that now.

The old silver Mac Pro chassis was basically an 80's vintage IBM chassis ending up on one end, with small changes in details

Also those 1984 PCs sold for about $3,000 each But this was before computers became entrainment centers so people were able to justify the price. Today, yes $3K is over prices for most people who are just looking for a media player and web browsers. iPads are perfect for that.

Well said and I remember those days.

Mac Pro is over-priced yea, and guess what, so is Apple Mac's

And ya, most Apple users either don't care/ or choose not to have an open mind, but with the Mac Pro, are you really going to have top quality hardware, for only $2,000 ?

There is no way in the world this would even happen in the Apple universe.... And for all those who wanna backlash, rather than complain, get a PC instead and save your comments.

The Mac Pro is designed to enterprises, not for the average consumer (although consumers may also want it)

TV production companies will not get top quality hardware for only $2,000, since they KNOW, you get what you pay for....

You pay more money, you get better quality.....

Otherwise, we'd all be driving crappy 1992 cars in 2013 :p ....

And if you just got a $14,000 piece of junk,,,, well... sorry sir, you just got pawned.

If you're paying > $5k on your State and Federal Income Taxes then I suggest you either make twice the average median income and/or need a new tax accountant/software app.

psssh- Not to brag but I pay 4k per QUARTER in Fed taxes alone. And I deduct everything I can think of, including my mortgage interest. I'd love to hear how someone could (legally) pay less than $5k total unless they have a really low income.

BTW- I drive a 13 year old Plymouth Neon. Everyone has different priorities with what they spend their money on. I'm single so I don't have the expenses people with kids have. I can spend it on my business and on traveling.

Yeah if you are paying less than 5k in taxes like mdriftmeyer says, then you are making about 20k / year based on normal deductions. That is NOT the median of US salaries. And that is only for fed, add state into that and you are looking at 17-18k salary.

And for solid evidence about this, I used to work for a company that did on-line calculations for IRS.

When the Mac Pro came out, the first thing I did was spec out an HP z620 tower (very nice btw) and with the same processor, memory, etc, it came out to 12k.. They had a coupon however for 20% at the time (so if they are willing to give 20% off the tower, how bad did they mark it up to begin with) . That makes it $9k for those that don't want to calculate. The parts are expensive no matter how you try to do the math. And everyone else just keeps coming up with "well, I can build it for 2k by buying newegg parts and putting an i7 in there with cheap consumer gaming memory and a gaming graphics card and a gaming motherboard with a name like "sabertooth gaming"). Not the same thing guys, if that power is enough for you then keep doing that. I opted for an 8-core mac pro since pricing was similar (slightly cheaper actually) than the z620/z680 (one of the better quality machines for windows).

Save the story about that "Apple tax".... Its not only Apple with high prices here.

Read my the rest of my post about TV production companies, then do this again..

How does one define "high prices"? What would not be a high price?

Your correct... you can't define "high prices"... only the individual can do that. All I'm saying it's high priced to ME and probably a few other people.

That does not mean it IS high priced by any means.

In fact, to broadcasters, its probably the cheapest thin they bought.

Does xcode and the ios simulator even take advantage of all of those cores? The SSD might help but you could get that anywhere. IMO a new iMac would make for an excellent machine just for strictly iOS development.

The issue is with saying all an iOS developer uses is Xcode.. Yes it is in no way capable of using that power, but using a combination of tools can use a lot more of it. (and yes, the GPU's will be mostly useless.) Either way, its his money/machine, so it doesn't matter to us, eh?

I dunno if I agree with that. XCode definitely takes advantage of grandcentral (multiple cores) and the simulator will be MUCH faster with better graphics cards.
