People hating on this guy for being rich? I'm not rich but most of my freelance projects haul in a minimum amount close to the asking price for this machine. Something like that would easily last me 4-5 years and be paid off almost immediately. But for now my rMBP is working fine. I think eventually I'll get one of these and a rMBA or iPad Pro if they ever make them. Like someone else said it's not how much you make but how you spend it. So many people blow their money. I'm still driving a car from the late 90s because I've taken care of it and it runs well. I put a car payment away each month into savings and will buy my next car with cash when this one dies. I do the same thing with freelance projects. Usually I put back 5-10% for equipment upgrades because honestly I'm finally at the point in my life where I value my time more than money. I do a quick cost/benefit analysis if I see something that might aid my workflow. Spending money to make money only works if you're smart about it.

Considering the percentage some of us pay on state and federal taxes, it can make a Mac Pro cheaper for us than an iMac for you...

For example: Person X has no business thus no business write offs. He buys the high end iMac + i7 processor for 2200.00

Person Y pays state and federal government 40% of every dollar made in taxes. He buys the low end Mac Pro for 3000 but then writes it off his taxes thus making the true out of pocket cost only 1800.

Person Y saves 400 that s/he could put towards a nice monitor (actually in the above 40% scenario that actually equates to about a $650 monitor).

Edit: this is precisely why I am considering buying one next year before the end of the year. I don't need this much power, but it is time to replace the Mac Pro 1,1. Since I won't get it before jan 1 there is no rush for me.

If you're paying > $5k on your State and Federal Income Taxes then I suggest you either make twice the average median income and/or need a new tax accountant/software app.

Wow can't believe they would just leave a $2000 + package on your doorstep. I would complain :D

So you would rather have your delivery guy know what's inside? Plus Apple always requires signatures unless you specifically want it differently. Guy could have been home and simply out his Mac Pro in his doorstep for the picture. Relax!

For most it's a tax deduction

i would never buy one if it wasnt a tax deduction for me.

if you make 'a lot of money' and are taxed at the top rate you're around 50% federal+state tax

that means you need to make $6,000 just to buy a minimum mac pro.

A lot of drivers for common carriers (UPS, FedEx) will deliver packages without a signature, even if the shipper stipulated it.

It saves them the hassle/expense of delivering it the following day (which is a big deal around the holidays).

Conversely, some drivers will not deliver packages to businesses around the holidays. I have seen a UPS delivery notice go from "Out for delivery" to "Recipient not available. Business closed." where there were several people at the address in question, simply because the driver didn't want to get dinged for poor performance on a holiday eve.

What Apple stipulates is not gospel, a lot of drivers will do whatever they damned well please and if the package is stolen, their employer will get caught eating the cost. UPS drivers are Teamsters, they don't really care about doing the right thing, they can't be fired (unless they commit some sort of felony).

At least the FW to TB dongle that I ordered at the same time as my new 8 core Mac Pro will be delivered today :D

my keyboard and mighty mouse was supposed to be delivered today but it got shipped out late and it schedule for delivery on the 26th :( (first world problems) Thank god its going to come so it can sit in a box for over a month! :D

which BTW I should pick one up! Thanks for reminding me!

I have a very good tax accountant. Draw your own conclusions.

Trying to understand why anyone would opt for the $2999 configuration when a faster iMac with a screen can be had for about $100 less. Sure it looks cool, but cool isn't going to get your work done. You really need to push up the cores and ram and then the price goes through the roof.

I'll bet it is! Let him enjoy it and be happy, and hopefully put it to good use. Although, the people buying these aren't necessarily rich. Pros in certain industries, rich or not, need this kind of horsepower.

If everyone were honest, I'm curious what the actual percentage is of people buying it for "work" as opposed to it being just a toy.

Non-rich pro here. Mine will be used almost exclusively for post production sound. It will be the machine on which I make my living day in and day out.
