First Machines Using Kaby Lake Processors Coming This Fall, but MacBook Pro Not Likely Among Them

All the rumours keep pointing to a thinner, lighter, smaller "pro". I cannot see Apple keep using the quad core 28w parts and still being able to keep it cool and light, while shrinking the cooling to fit in a smaller chassis. Lets be honest, the current MBPRO chassis isn't significantly larger than the MBA as is.
Since there really haven't been any 28-W TDP quad-core chips (except for a single Haswell CPU) for many years (if ever), it is hard to know what you are talking about.

I'm beginning to think we are going to see a re-shuffled linup completely at this point.

MacBook (s) to use the 6.5w parts (Core M series)
the MacBook Air will be discontinued
MacBook Pro will use the 15w dual core ULVs

Apple has already stopped using the Quad core 28w parts on other products. They've opted for the 15w ULV parts for their 21" iMacs and Mac Mini on last refreshes. Why is it unreasonable to think they may continue with the same and hit the Macbook Pro with the same changes
I think HP has shown with their Spectre laptop, that you can make a more powerful laptop than the macbook air and still make it thinner.

So maybe Apple can make use of their genious engineers and make the Macbook Pro as thin as Air, affordable and more powerful. If they learned anything from constructing the new Macbook 12", shrinking of technology etc, they should be able to take a step further.

I just hope the future is not gonna make me chose between a super expensive low tier Macbook Pro to get some descent performance, and a still expensive Macbook that is basically powered by a mobile phone processor.

I think Apple is working so har to perfect new machines they are making that once they are out they are outdated, because they were suppose to come out 6 months earlier. Thats at least how it always feels.

If folks are still waiting for Skylake, I wouldn't expect to see Kaby Lake in them right now.

Adding Touch ID support would be fantastic and it could be something I'd actually use to justify buying a new MacBook Pro even though my 2012 model is still working fine.

Sounds like you are desperately looking for a reason... ;)
Just buy it if it makes you happy :p

Apple seem to charge customers as if they are incorporating the latest technology, so why isn't Apple incorporating the best tech? Apple seems to appear to be half a year to a year behind in some cases. What exactly is preventing Apple from doing so?
Maybe that's because every 2 months, the latest tech becomes obsolete? Apple doesn't want to (and shouldn't) play the refresh every few months game. It's not good for their reputation or customers. You may want the latest commodity PC specs but rushing the latest processor into any system is a bad idea. Ask Microsoft how that went for them with the Surface. Apple would prefer to keep happy (albeit slightly slower) customers instead of pissed off ones with product recalls.

This is why I really don't understand the rMB update in April. Apart from a Skylake CPU and rose gold, was there anything else added? Performance wasn't really improved that much so why not hold off that update until the Kaby Lake Core M was available for an Autumn launch. The full 4K encode/decode would really help out this little laptop. An April rMBP refresh with Skylake would have allowed a late 16/early 17 Kaby Lake update. Now it looks like being over 18 months between updates...

Of course, there could be a move to the U 15 W chips for the 13" rMBP which could launch this year before the 15" launches early next year.
The performance boost for the Core M was a bit greater. More importantly, it boosted battery life, which was significant for the MacBook.

No, not at all. Just saying that if I wanted a reason, that would be a good one for me to use - not that I really need a reason; if I want it, I'll buy it.

But the Apple Watch Auto Unlock would trump TouchID. No action VS tapping a button.
I'm concerned about Apple watch Auto Unlock. I don't want to go the the bathroom next to my office and somebody unlock my computer while I'm nearby with my watch. This is bluetooth right? Macs don't have NFC. Bluetooth has quite a range - more than enough to cover nearby rooms. Is there something else at play?

You mean like they silently updated the current MacBook Pros to Skylake? Oh wait, they're still on Haswell, lol. The days of Apple silently updating Macs with current CPUs and GPUs are long gone.

Time to face the facts: Apple do not care about Macs and probably would EOL all Macs if they didn't fear the backlash against such a move. I would even go so far as to say they now have contempt for Mac users. The Mac division is where they send the engineers who can't make it on the iDevice teams.

Don't you need macs to create the apps though? I don't have enough knowledge of the app ecosystem to say for sure. Don't mind being corrected on this. :)

It only works at 4 feet away. You practically have to be on top of your computer. It doesn't use the full Bluetooth range of roughly 30 feet.

Yeah. According to an interview I listened to, the computer determines how close you are to it by calculating how long it takes for the signal to get there.

Apple could do a better job modernizing the MacBook, but putting the very latest chipsets in the MacBook right after they get released by Intel is not a good idea. Microsoft did that with the Surface Pro line, and it took them 6 months to patch major glitches after the device hit the market.

And those are apparently not using the 28 watt processor.

According to an old Intel roadmap, Kaby Lake chips appropriate for use in the MacBook Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini won't launch until the very end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017, meaning any Apple machines released in the fall of 2016 may be limited to Skylake chips.

I have it working.. and if you are further away then 0.5m it doesn't work

Don't worry complainers, I'm sure Apple will not update the MacBook Pro until next year if that's what you want? What's another year right?

Meanwhile Nvidia was demonstrating its new 1060 and 1070 and 1080 mobile GPUs running Gears of War 4 at 4K and ultra settings at 60 fps and higher on EVGA laptops that are pretty compact:

http://www.pocket-lint.com/review/1...preview-played-on-an-nvidia-gtx-1070-notebook

Now I have to say, even if it is horrid Windows, the promise of actual real desktop class performance in a nice compact laptop is rather compelling.

I don't think Apple is waiting on Intel to release new chips for the Macbook Pro, they have been waiting on Nvidia to release newer mobile graphics chips that are faster and more power efficient.

And they did just that today:

There may be new MacBook Pros sooner than later!
Except that well.. Apple is not going to be using any nVidia chips in the new MacBook Pros at all. They are going to use the new AMD Polaris ones.

ARM is the future..
and if MacBooks become as thin as an iPad.. what's the use of them both excisting.. one of the 2 will disappear.. and it will be the first one.
