Oh lord. That person at Apple is SOOO fired on Monday (if these are legit). Although there really is no way of knowing, since exif info can be changed pretty easily.

But, if he/she is a program manager at Apple, then its quite possible.

Well then, I sure hope it wasn't Steve's iPhone that took these.

Should you guys really be reporting on this when the person in question is likely to get fired because of it? I mean, publishing rumours is on thing, but haven't you guys ever heard of ethics in journalism? It would be simple enough to state that "Mac Rumours has independentally confirmed that the photos are authentic" without publishing the department and team on which the person works. Don't most journalists usually refrain from outting thier sources in the interest of integrity and their effort to preserve effectiveness of the First Ammendment? ThinkSecret went to court to preserve this right for all of the rumour sites and you guys have just sort of tossed that effort out the window with this one. I'd advise any Apple insiders to stay clear of providing content to you guys in the future.

Meh. I've been using a 3.2MP phone for the last year, with a proper flash. There are 5MP phones out already. The iPhone camera is, in a word, crap. The pictures here are no big deal, I don't know why everyone says they're good for a camera phone... Maybe because phones in the US tend to be 1 generation behind European phones and about 2-3 generations behind Asian ones? I had a K750i two years ago which had 2MP and images this good.

With you on that one. I am not being sold by camera.... would be a back step for me!

Some here seem to have a hard time grasping this fact. The iPhone certainly has its good points, but it isn't the camera. Comparing something to ones own experience is not the same as comparing to what's available outside ones own country.

Actually I'm in Japan. Maybe even more ahead of the curve? Still, I don't believe 5M is the norm.

Nope, not even close. The US is still lingering on the 2MP front. Most phones don't even have 1MP, in which case I wonder wtf the point of a camera in a phone is in the first place?

I gotta say, the iPhone is overrated IMO.

Yes, it brings some fresh air to the cell phone world with the new interface, new design.. but the camera is weak, the storage is on the weak side, the battery life reports are weak, and the price is high at 500-600.

Very un-apple like to just do what's the average with a 2mp phone.

Picture is kind of creepy looking. Thought I was looking at Aphex Twin for a second.

Hi,

Thanks for the input. I definitely take this stuff seriously.

- I don't think their job would necessarily be at risk for it. The iPhone is an announced product.
- All information posted was publicly available on the internet. Editing down the information as you suggested, does not actually provide any significant protection of the identity of the individual, since (again) it was all posted publicly on the internet on a personal account.

Not to keep going OT , but...

Please. The TS case was about an alleged Apple employee leaking information to the site about an unannounced product, most likely violating the NDAs that they had signed. This story is about finding photos that were posted to a public site, whether accidentally or intentionally, not leaked to Macrumors. In a journalistic fashion, the owner of that account was discovered, which made it the "story" that it is.

The First Amendment is very much intact. Save your ire for when it is truly needed.

Why this is a big deal is beyond me. It's not like the iPhone has an amazing camera. My phone has a camera that is as good as if not better than the iPhones. Move along people...

And what phone is that, pray tell?

I've had many phones over the past 3 years -- many expensive ones, and none of them compare to these images.

Not Likely

After looking at both photos I'm on the "no" side....

As far as I know, There's ONE iPhone on the loose and that's tucked in Steve's pocket. I'm not sure about the first photo but I can with 99% certainty say that the second photo is from the New York, New York Casino is Las Vegas. If you go into the "Brooklyn Area" of the eatery area they have a wall of refrigerated meat for everyone to look at.

If Steve has EVER leaked anything to the public before is in serious doubt. Why he would fly down to Las Vegas to snap two pictures and set them loose on the interwebs is beyond me.

I'm calling them fakers. That's my OPINION. (And I am entitled to that!)

What IS the big deal here ?

So.It's a pic taken with the iPhone. Is news out of Cupertino so slow that this silly stuff has to be front page ?

I voted negative only because I think this is sensationalism gone bad.

I am actually surprised how solid the camera is but, I would like to see how well it does in low light and how it will compare to an HTC TyTN with the macro switch on.

Shouldn't stuff like this (more hype then facts) be on page 2. I mean I know it's possibly in iPhone, but it's the same type of junk that goes on page 2.

I agree that this is not a big deal (for different reasons: I just don't care about the fact that a photo taken by the iPhone was posted online - the iPhone's photo quality seems alright).

However: it seems that in every rumor thread, someone says "Move along people". This annoys the heck out of me. Why is it your place to tell me or anyone else what to do? To me, it seems rather rude to do so.

I ran a tool called ExifTool, and found more information from the iPhone photos which do seem to corroborate the claim that they were taken with an iPhone (note the following in bold). However, the one thing that may suggest an edit is that the modify date is 8 days after the creation date (in italics). However, it's worth noting that the Primary Platform, Device Manufacturer, Profile Creator, and Profile Copyright EXIF tags are NOT editable by ExifTool.

Since the iPhone isn't in production yet this is probably just a prototype being used in some field testing - including downloading to flicker. It does show some work that Apple is going to need to do in the camera area and that is probably being addressed now.

As for the 2MP size, I believe part of that translate back to the memory levels of the first iPhones and ALL of the other features it will have, from music to pics to movies, plus Lord knows what else. When we get past Gen 1 we will probably see a lot more memory and that is going to make higher resolutions more viable.
