The problem will be with full screen apps (video, films, and even spreadsheets and other apps that use the real estate). The notch will be very intrusive. There should be a way to reduce the displayed area so the notch does not cut into the content. It might be possible to do that when going into full screen mode and still have 16:10 (if I have it right, there are about 100 "spare" pixels).
Notch will not cut any content, it will only be for the menu bar.

The display will always display 16:10 content.

Same deal with all that 'they look thick' nonsense. NO, they aren't, the 14" got even thinner! Apple has just finally prioritized function over design, making better use of the chassis (battery, cooling, speakers). Honestly, all you complainers rather just order a Macbook Air - they are thin, have no notch and no legacy ports, volià. I can't wait for my 14" Pro!
They didn’t get thinner. The thickness dimension is the dimension at its thickest point.

On the 2020 model, that is in the middle and the shape tapers towards the edges, there it is much thinner.

The 2021 model is like a brick. It’s just as thick at the edge as the middle.

I'm really going to miss the touchbar though. I hope they give that another go and do some thinking on how to improve the design and usability. It really shines when using pro apps like Logic and Final Cut
It's unlikely, unless they go full touch screen. It was expensive, unpopular, and not used by most applications. It's probably also responsible for a lot of "downselling" (one of my reasons for buying an MBA over the MBP was precisely because it had no TouchBar). You can use an iPad as a Touch Bar in SideCar mode if you want (that also gives you touch capability for the main Mac interface)

Well, I have a 16 in. MacBook Pro now, and the size of the screen is nice. Now that I see that the 14 in. is not that much bigger than the 13 in., Im debating if I should spend the extra money and get the 16 in. Im trading mine in, so my monthly payment would only go from $70 for the base 14 in. model to $90 for the base 16 in. model.
To be honest, when I was looking for my new MacBook Pro about a year ago, I was really hankering for the 16" because I thought that the 13" was going to be too small - previously been used to 15". And the price difference was enormous. So I went with the 13", bought a bottom-line iPad as well and use Sidecar. Couldn't have been happier with that decision if I tried. Palettes on the iPad, full screen on the Mac for working on - ~23" for less than the price of 16". On a desk it's perfect, but I very rarely do any paying work with it on my lap. Horses for courses, but I love it!

Notch, notch,notch...people are making a bigger deal out this of than needs be.

Do this, pretend your laptop has a notch right now. As you are cruising through the internet, notice that your eyes RARELY go to the top of the screen. My bet is most folks won't even know it's there for the most part.

It look’s really really chunky.
It’s like it’s got a built in case on it already
The body is a good 3mm thicker than the 2019. I’d hate to side by side with a 2016.
Sweet less thermal issues. Not an issue for me or for anyone who had to deal with a 2019 16”

new video of mbp 16” in hands surfaced:
The new shape of the MacBook Pro really reminds my of my 17" 2006 Intel MacBook Pro (the very first Intel model). It has the exact same curved body, but with a modern "lid" - presumably the sharper edges of the screen casing provide a little more space internally to fit the screen closer to the edges.

Better question: Was that notch really necessary?
No - of course not. Nor the keyboard. Nor the Apple logo. Nor the touchpad. Nor the HDMI port.

Every single bit of the design is some sort of a compromise. You could imagine other approaches - not sure there are any which really would be a better compromise for many users, though obviously anyone can disagree with the decision.

Great so Apple removed Function Keys, MagSafe, and other ports just to add them as a "feature" in the next years, so revolutionary of Apple, wow. Pinnacle of technology.

Current owner of: late 2019 MBP 16”, M1 MBA 13”, 2018 iPad Pro 12.9”

These new 14”/16” models are something….where do I begin?

  • The feet. I need to see these in person. In some photos, they look massive. Significant enough in size, that you can’t not look at them
  • The keyboard. I need to see this in person. I agree with those who say the design reminds them of HP or Toshiba laptops. I am not a fan of the look.
  • The notch. Indifferent, at this time. I need to see it in person.
  • The thickness. 2019 16” MBP is 14.09 in × 9.68 in × 0.64 in (35.8 cm × 24.6 cm × 1.6 cm). The new model is 14.01 in × 9.77 in × 0.66 in (35.6 cm × 24.8 cm × 1.68 cm). This is width x depth x thickness. The photo of Tim Cook with the new model sticks out to me. The thickness is there. I need to see what it looks like in person - possibly even bringing my 16” to sit it side-by-side.
  • The weight. 2019” MBP 16” is 4.3 lb (2.0 kg). The new M1’s…. 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg) (M1 Pro) or 4.8 pounds (2.2 kg) (M1 Max). The new 16” is going to be a heavier unit.
  • HDMI 2.0. Why? Why are the flagship notebooks from Apple introducing a legacy port? Not only is it ugly (the look of (4) USB-C ports and a 1/8th inch audio jack looks superior to me), but it’s just useless. This port is great, for everyone trying to connect their $3000 computer to their 2014 Acer 21” monitor. Any MacBook user is going to own the dongle for HDMI support. IMO, this port is unnecessary, dated, contributes to weight gains, contributes to increase in physical dimensions, and is useless. This is a feature looking for a problem to solve. Problem is, we’ve already solved for this. Less room for criticism if the port was HDMI 2.1.
  • SD card reader. Why? We’ve all got the accessories we need, if we need to read an SD card. Not everyone uses SD cards, and it just seems unnecessary. IMO, this port is unnecessary, dated, contributes to weight gains, contributes to increase in physical dimensions, and is useless. This is a feature looking for a problem to solve. Problem is, we’ve already solved for this.

In summary; the ugly ports, the keyboard, the feet, the size, the weight…..will be on my mind, when I see these in person. I cannot make a purchase until I see these in person.

Question: Has this release convinced anyone to buy the 13” M1 MacBook Pro? It has the old keyboard design, no feet, just USB-C ports, Touch Bar, no notch.

Question: What configuration is everyone going for? Anyone feel it necessary to splurge for the M1 Max? 16 vs 32gb ram? I imagine most everyone is going for 1TB?

Happy to see the blackness of the display to hide the notch.
Hope to see some low light pictures soon.

I can live with the notch and the blacked out keyboard.

Admittedly, I think the tapered design looked better than this more “squared” design but I’m liking the 2021 models.

Can't wait for the teardowns.

Is there ANY CHANCE the hardware is there for Face ID and it's just not implemented yet from the software side?
Nope. Screen is too thin for the iPhone Face ID hardware, so they have to redesign it first.

I never would have noticed the all black keyboard until I read about it here. The notch OTOH I noticed right away. With the notch, no one will possibly mistake 2021 14” MBP for a Windows laptop. ?

I have used Windows Hello IR on a laptop before. You lift the lid and it logs you in. There's no angling that's needed. FaceID should be superior with ToF sensors unless the angle is not as good as IR right now.
For logins that would be true, but not necessarily for use cases like password entry.

How I wish that were my experience! Across three models of Surface, it has never worked reliably. Sometimes it lulls me into thinking it will work - then doesn't. Other times, I assume it isn't going to work - but it does.

At best I'd suggest 40:60 success to fail - and sometimes much worse.

Yes, I have re-trained it numerous times.

I have been massively impressed by face id on my 12 Pro phone and 2018 iPad. They seem to work in all sorts of situations. Just wish it worked with a mask.

all-black keyboard gives me HP vibes.

Is that the HP DV9000? I got one in 2007. It came with a 17” screen and weighed almost 8 pounds. I actually looked up the dimensions this morning just to make myself feel better about the new MBP 16”. The HP was 15.6” wide and 11.25” deep.

The HDMI dongle by itself is hell because it's always unreliable, and you tend to need it more on the go. The rest are fine.
Eh. USB-A was the one I always needed.

Not that it mattered because my adapters were in my bag along with my charger, headphones, and other stuff I took with me. Am I the only person who carries their laptop is a bag?

I’m trying to think of any time, besides going down to my own kitchen, where I carry my laptop by itself.

The addition of ports doesn’t bother me (though the choice of HDMI is still weird to me). The idea that carrying adapters was some kind of major imposition though?

And unreliable? What adapter were you using?
