It reminds me a lot of the Titanium PowerBook G4 (all black keyboard) and later aluminium PowerBook G4 (squarer design). I think they took a lot of inspiration from those models. And it sounds like the next MacBook Air will be taking inspiration from the iBook G3 (the colours) and later iBooks (all white).

Interesting.
It's a retro design alright.

I agree with your point on touchscreens, they just don't work great with laptops.

I disagree on OLEDs, while burn in is a concern I thin it is really overblown. My iPhone has a lot of static images on screen quite a lot of the time and it's a non issue on iPhone. Personally I wish the 14" MBP I just ordered came with OLED rather than LCD.

It's not overblown, see what happens after just a few months of use:

People who haven't used other devices but macbooks...
Cool, now show us all the windows laptops with super-thin bezels + decent 1080p webcam? All I ever see is that Dell XPS, which is called out in reviews as having a ******* webcam as its worst feature. So yeah, Dell managed to cram a 720p with tiny sensors in that bezel by giving zero ****s about its quality. Other manufacturers are putting crowns on top of the display to house the camera, they're putting webcams in the bottom bezel or in the keyboard (better groom those nose hairs), or just removing them entirely. A good webcam in a thin bezel laptop is not as solved as a lot of you keep suggesting. *Everyone* is making compromises.

On the bright side, at least with Apple's solution, I guarantee there will be plenty of software workarounds available the day of launch for all you folks who can't stand it and care more about aesthetics vs vertical screen space.

Every single MacBook and Mac in history never had a notch and were already iconic with just the Apple logo on the back.

Macs (and iPhones and iPods) used to be white. It was THE most iconic component of Apple computer designs for many many years*.

Yet, people have been going absolutely ballistic over the white bezels of the new iMacs or the recent rumors of white bezels on the next Macbook Air.

Go figure.

As for the notch, I will never understand all the hyperventilating. Just as with the 'chin'. I don't notice either of them. Or care about them. Sometimes it feels like people look for things to complain about solely for the sake of complaining.

(*including the illuminated Apple logo on the back of Macbooks, yet everyone seemed to be fine when they did away with that -- I for one still miss it)

It's particularly worth comparing the new black keyboard to the (IMO, superior) elegance of the keyboard on the old space gray MBP.

I'm starting to think their main purpose in changing was simply to distinguish the appearance of the new MBP's from the old ones—even a better-looking product can seem dated after it's been out for a while.

Alternately: The black background does give it a more "industrial" look than the more polished consumer look of the last gen MBP. Maybe they were going for that.

I think you're right about it being a change made primarily for the sake of looking different from the old model but I also think it's an intentional style tribute to the PowerBook G4 Ti, a laptop that looks very similar (in shape) to the new MacBook Pro. That keyboard looked like a black block in the machine rather than having too much contrast in between the keys:

Just wanna see how well it runs GPU compute and Cyberpunk 2077.

It can't run Cyberpunk 2077, not because it's not powerful, but CP2077 uses DirectX 12, which even Parallels Desktop 17.1 doesn't support.

You can play DirectX 11 games though.

I just wished they would have made the touch pad on the 16 inch smaller so they could bring the keyboard closer to the front. I always feel like I'm reaching on the 16. The 13 and now the 14 are much easier to type on.

Double anodised with a darker finish. I don’t really like, but this is what we’ve got for the next cycle so ?‍♂️
Are you sure it’s just a “paint job”? I speculated it is a no individual key cut on chassi, but rather a cheaper to produce, one cut with a polymer slab keyboard slapped in it. If true this makes me more disgusted with the design has I can’t cut some slack for the sake of “keeping the price reasonable” argument. The thing looks awfully generic.

People complaining about the notch need to look at this photo. The screen is bigger even if you subtract the notch, and the notch only cuts into the central menubar area which is normally not used.
The way I’m expecting, the notch will likely be between menu icons, rendering it more unnoticeable.

Ha. You called? ;)

When I got my white 12" iBook, all of a sudden pretty young women came out of the woodwork to ask me about it. I'd be out and about like in a cafe or something and randomly they'd come up to me and strike up a conversation. Being a straight guy, I was quite pleased with all the attention, even if it was really just for my iBook.

But then I upgraded to a 15" PowerBook Titanium, and all of that attention just stopped. :(
Looks like you’ll have to wait for the “square macaroons” Airs for that alluring effect…meanwhile these are for work?

The notch is distracting I agree with you. It's just going to take some time. But it's an iconic design of Apple. It defines it's Apple's or else it's going to look like HP or Dell notebook.

Love the full screen format. So, glad I ordered at 16".
That’s the welcome screen and if you have the Apple wallpaper up on the screen the notch will be less noticeable at least that’s what has been said. The dark wallpaper blends with the notch ?

A laptop screen is on constantly, your phone screen is not. In comparison your phone screen is on a tiny fraction of the time your laptop or monitor is on. This is why oled sucks for computing, it has image retention in a short period of time and every time you “condition” the display to remove retention it reduces the life of the display.

Won’t the menu icons take up the space aside the notch making it more unnoticeable?
Can’t understand people complaining about having more screen size. I guess people plan to look more at the notch than whatever they’ll be doing on these powerful machines??
