I don't necessarily understand all the attention put towards the keyboard deck.

When I'm using my laptop, my eyes/peripheral vision don't even notice the keys.

Maybe I'm "old school" or a traditional typist. (opposed to the HUNT-N-PECK) youngsters or people who never learned to type without looking at the keyboard....

Dang peeps, that's a lot of chirping about superficial looks.

But on the practical note, WHITE keyboards are beautiful but they get dirty and show dirt like a MOFO.

Black don't crack.
I used to think like you but my white iPad magickeyboard made me reconsider. The thing looks awful generic very “unApple”. Looks also easier to change if the need arises…hopefully not a sign…

Heh, this is probably going to result in a lot of smudged up video on Zoom calls.
It’s a new bokeh effect, strangely not highlighted on the presentation.
But considering the cloth hysteria I ‘ll be expecting iGlove coming soon…

Are you sure it’s just a “paint job”? I speculated it is a no individual key cut on chassi, but rather a cheaper to produce, one cut with a polymer slab keyboard slapped in it.
Apple specifically said in the keynote that the keyboard area is anodized aluminum ?

“Double anodised black well” My bad then. But is the chassis still a one piece carved or is it an aluminium slab inserted in a cut? Something like the standalone keyboard slapped in a cut?
Easier and cheaper to make and change if it’s needed.

I’m usually a bit of a notch defender. I don’t even think it looks as bad as people make out on the phone but I have to admit that looks awful on the MacBook.

Wow, lots of people really upset about the notch. (...)
For the people who can't stand it though, I think we can pretty much guarantee there'll be a one-click freeware tool within a few weeks of release that bumps the menu bar down to just below the notch and fills the space above with black. With the Mini-LED display, you shouldn't even see any backlight bleed! If you hate it that much, it'll be like the notch was never there in the first place.

Exactly. But hey, these crybabies and downvoters who just reflexively spout their 'but that notch!' garbage can't be convinced with arguments of reason. In this case, that they get additional vertical desktop space and a very good webcam + light & truetone sensors. Yeah, they should indeed just disable that entire area (black pixels). 'Problem' solved ?‍♂️

Same deal with all that 'they look thick' nonsense. NO, they aren't, the 14" got even thinner! Apple has just finally prioritized function over design, making better use of the chassis (battery, cooling, speakers). Honestly, all you complainers rather just order a Macbook Air - they are thin, have no notch and no legacy ports, volià. I can't wait for my 14" Pro!

thats what this is...have you used the one on the 2019 16"...literally the same keyboard if not better then the pre butterfly.

They are not. The typing distance on new "Magic" Keyboard are not the same as Pre Butterfly Scissors Keyboard.

Well these photos cured my cravings. I don’t need power of those laptops, but I was considering 16 inch MacBook to be my only machine. This would clean up my desk setup nicely. But at this point I just can’t justify buying such a pricey machine while I don’t like the design. I would very much prefer previous 16’ chassis with new SoC and all the mini-led + promotion jazz. Not this.

At the same time I’m happy that some people find it ok, I can’t wait for you guys to love all the power you’ll get. It’s long overdue.

The screen looks nice, especially the retro hello, but still don't like the body. I don't care about the notch, the issue is the Body. It looks old you can't get away from it.

I don't know which I dislike more, the all black keyboard or the notch.

I have an old MacBook Air with the large silver bezel and an M1 MacBook Air. I prefer the large silver bezel, I don't leave smudges on the display when opening the laptop.

Well... Lets hope they stick with the black keys. ?

I'm already OCD about keeping my black keyboards clean. With a white one I would definitely travel with cleaning spray and cloth just to keep my OCD happy "just in case" ?

The notch looks utterly terrible.

"Doesn't look that bad" = looks ridiculous but I'm willing to live with it because I don't exactly have a choice.

As such,

Lipstick + pig = pig wearing lipstick. All of the 'I don't mind' comments changes nothing.

It had to be said. I swear there's people out there that will convince you that sometimes having no arms is better than having arms. Sigh.

Anyways..nice (expensive!!!!) machines though.
is the glass half empty or half full?

"there's people out there that will convince you that sometimes having no arms is better than having arms. Sigh."

so is having a notch a better than having no notch?

Damn, looks like Macbooks put on some of that "Covid-19" lockdown weight.

That Boi lookin THICCCCC.

The thicker lid makes me think a new and improved smaller version/design of FaceID is on the horizon.

Full screen hides the menu options and notifications? I hope there's a setting to permenantly view them in "full screen"

People complaining about the notch need to look at this photo. The screen is bigger even if you subtract the notch, and the notch only cuts into the central menubar area which is normally not used.
The problem will be with full screen apps (video, films, and even spreadsheets and other apps that use the real estate). The notch will be very intrusive. There should be a way to reduce the displayed area so the notch does not cut into the content. It might be possible to do that when going into full screen mode and still have 16:10 (if I have it right, there are about 100 "spare" pixels).
