XP is going to soon go under the "Unsupported" heading by Microsoft. All companies will be switching to Windows 7 soon enough.
If only it were that easy. Truth is, a lot of companies will give up XP and the dinosaurs running it when such boxen are pried out of their cold, money-grubbing hands.

Adobe Gala flash preview - Why not use Intel GPU

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/gala/

It does indeed lower my CPU usage on flash. Downside is now it uses NVIDIA GPU instead of Intel GPU so it will drain battery.

Seems that the intel GPU should be more than capable of playing 1080p flash.

So it seems like Apple is throwing Adobe a bone, but still insists that flash will drain the battery. Of course it would on NVIDIA GPU.

Intel GPU should be more than capable of playing flash 1080p.

All you have to do is set a fall back to Flash if HTML5 H.264 is not supported by the browser. It's pretty clear that H.264 will be the winner, Mozilla is just fighting a losing battle.
I hope Mozilla changes its mind about H.264. Not expecting it, but it surely would simplify things.

Yep. Already discussed here: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=9791389#post9791389

Flash will still support PowerPC after 10.1 update goes out. It will just be the last update for G3 Processors. G4's and G5's will still get updates but no hardware acceleration as that requires 10.6.3 plus supported cards.

That is a godsend to hear. I was afraid that Flash would go the same way that Silverlight went on PowerPC. Dropping Power PC would be quite ironic indeed considering my nearly 5 year old Quad 2.5 G5 can handle flash better than my less than one year old C2D 2.66 MBP. This is of course with pre 10.1 versions, haven't installed the 10.1 beta just yet as I think I'll wait awhile to see what kind of glitches pop up.

pretty pointless with 3 graphics cards. Flash still sucks

The press release didn't say that only 3 graphics cards had support for H264 acceleration. Apple said that "This reference describes the Video Decode Acceleration framework available on Mac OS X 10.6.3 and later with Mac [models equipped with] the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M or GeForce GT 330M."

See the key words "models equipped with" That means that if your Mac model is identified by these graphics numbers. In this case it just means that the Macbook Pro with a 9600m can be utilized too.

See my above post for proof.

No, Flash really isn't more capable than those internet standards. Also you should watch Microsoft's latest presentation for IE9, they are really pushing for internet standards with their next release.
http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/

I've seen what microsoft plan with IE9. Its good to see that microsoft are at last embracing web standards, at long last.

Sorry, I'd have to disagree, Flash not being more capable than web standards. Flash will progress faster than web standards in order to keep itself a competitive edge with the threat of HTML5.

H.264 will require royalty payments. This may very well impede H.264's success on the web as the video format of choice.

BTW - mozilla have already said they will not pay the royalty fees.

Yeah they want you to upgrade to their new hardware. But honestly, who is dumb enough to invest (again) in upgrading to a product line when it is quite obvious the company is not willing to support the hardware to the extent that it is possible (you call that good customer service?). Apple's pathetic driver support is making me consider whether or not I should remain an Apple consumer. Love or hate the windows platform, the fact that it allows for the manufacturers of the hardware to write their drivers ensures some responsibility. Apple really needs to get their act together. Nickel and Diming their consumer base isn't the way to go. Offering the best products, the best support, etc. is a viable long-term strategy.

I agree, such exclusions are a major issue regarding Apple's understanding of their customers and their loyalty. I'm starting to feel seriously fed up with Apple's strategy of trying to squeeze every penny out of long time loyal customers. I understand that they can't bring every upgrade to old models every time, but excluding recent models to try to force people to upgrade is ridiculous. How short do they want to cut their product's life cycle??? Do they expect us to buy new computers every year???

I bought my MacPro only 6 months ago, and my MacBook Pro, 18 months ago... for both I paid a pretty high premium, and neither can be considered "old" - specially the Mac Pro, which uses the current ATI 4870... so I'll be quite pissed if they don't release this feature for at least this one. One thing I used to like about Macs was that, while paying significantly more money for them, you could expect them to last longer. It seems Apple is breaking that deal with lower quality and lousier products, all for the sake of short term profits. If they don't rethink their strategy and get back to their core values, their current success will become its worst enemy as they become just another hardware company.

Explain to me what magic you think Adobe can pull out of their anus to make Flash suddenly more advanced than all of these internet standards. Adobe is too busy trying to fix performance issues on Flash, let alone add anything. Everything they've added just added more bloat. It needs a rewrite or better yet to just go away.

Payments will not stop H.264 from eventually steam rolling over Ogg.

Am I too cynical to think that Apple won't want to write a driver for the older nVidia gpus like the 8600GT, even if it only requires trivial effort because flash on nVidia = toasty gpu = logic board failure = more cost to Apple to replace?

i cant see the little 'box' up in the left corner:/ and i got NVIDIA GeForce 9400M? what should i do? have rebooted etc after the install.

Personally, I think it's everyone involved's fault. Apple for not making the APIs and whatever available, & Adobe for not taking advantage of it & writing clean, efficient code.

Also, I'll add my discontent about the lack of Mac Pro support. Unless I read the article wrong (which is entirely possible.)

That doesn't make a lot of sense. Adobe just enabled hardware acceleration on both Windows and Mac OS X, and as many have stated, it's not just video where Flash fails hard. I am 100% behind Apple in trying to rid the internet of Flash.

Well I see the white box now..tested it with a Transformers vid on Youtube. Don't really notice a difference on my 2009 iMac. Every time I clicked a link in another window, the video stuttered.

Also, haven't been to Hulu in awhile but tested it. Episodes don't look as crisp as they used to, where is the button that you can select for HD, non-hd, etc?

To make it work in Chrome, close Chrome, open a Terminal and cd to /Applications/Google Chrome.app/Contents/Versions/<your chrome version>/ and delete the flash plugin in there that comes with Chrome. Now install the new plugin from the DMG using Adobe's installer.

Go here to check your version: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html . It should say "MAC 10,1,81,3".

Some youtube videos don't play smoothly on a 9400M card, like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw . Can anyone confirm this? I can see a weird stuttering during playback. Happens in all browsers.

Played fine on my MBA 1.8 128SSD. Had to change it to 480p though, it stuttered at the lower setting.

Flash on Mac: too litle, too late ...

Adobe flash is optimized only for Windows, and I don't think that will change in the near future and supporting old hardware. So, thats why Flash in Mac is too litle too late for me

I notice that Safari is a lot faster than Firefox for me. I'm getting stuttering in Firefox, but Safari seems to be handling the 1080p youtube vids without any. I never used Safari previously, so it's hard to say if it's the Gala update. But I will be using Safari for video now.

No dice on my NVIDIA GEForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB. Same CPU utilization (minimal on my Core i7 hackintosh). Ironically, QuickTime DOES use GPU acceleration -- I can play 1080p H.264 videos using almost none of my CPU power. I think QuickTime may be using OpenCL acceleration that's not open to the calls they gave Adobe. (OpenCL works fine on my computer.)

I wonder why the second and third revision of MacBook Air wasn't on that list even though they utilise GF 9400M

The 13" Macbook "Pro" available since October 2008 supports this, but was not referred as a "Pro" until a future release. That should be specified in the article.

Strange because according to NVIDIA PureVideo technology description:
http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/11036/PureVideo_Product_Comparison.pdf

H.264 Decode Acceleration is available in GF8600GT. and even in GF7xxx products, so question is why they are not supported and mentioned on the support list by Apple/Adobe ? If it means that Apple silently force users of just 2 years old MBPs to buy new platform and pay extra $$$ for matte display I would say: kiss my a**!
