A negative article about Flash on Macrumors! Grab your popcorn or treat of choice folks, this'll be a good'un.

(not that anyone will care, but the NYT site loads perfectly well on my HTC desire and a bit faster than it does on my iPad in my less than scientific test)

I switched from iPhone 4 to Droid 2, and I'm happy with flash (not frash though)

After being advised to switch, I did and don't regret it one bit. Android is awesome! I'm an iFanboy, but Flash 10.1 on the Droid 2 is fantastic. I've played a few games, streamed a few shows, and it's works fine.

Frash is horrible! It never worked on my jailbroken iPhone 4... never. Of course it's not an official plugin, but it still sucks. If you want Flash, switch to Android.

I'm really sick of the iPhone in general. I don't care what Steve has to say anymore. The guy is insane! Flash is relevant whether it's convenient to Apple or not.

I bought the Droid 2 on Verizon (exclusive). Now I actually have 3G at my permanent address! Imagine having 3G practically everywhere...

Speaking of the Flash battery life issues, I lose 7% of my charge after streaming a 22 minute show. I'm happy. I just like the option to do so.

OMG i'M MACRUMORS I NEED TO POST STORIES VERY LOOSLY TIED TO APPLE TO VALIDATE MY OPINION THAT STEVE JOBS IS GOD AND EVERYTHING HE SAYS IS SPOT ON!

What I find sad about all this is that Flash could work if Adobe put the effort into it. But it's as if when they bought Macromedia they've let Flash just sort of limp along. The actual program is still a mess to use. About all Adobe has done is try to tie it in with their other products. It's almost as if Adobe has turned into another Microsoft, seemingly oblivious to its problems.

It continues to baffle me that tech industry "insiders" and pundits can't learn the very simple lesson that the boarder market will not bear or sustain a technology (no matter how "cool" or widespread) that does not deliver a good user experience*.

*Absent artificial circumstances/profit/revenue motives that drive adoption, predatory practices, unethical dealings, or even illegal business practices to artificially position an inferior platform, that is. These happen pretty often, but even considering these, I fail to understand why people think it is either a good idea or a successful one (either business-wise or technically) to drain someone's battery for an unreliable and difficult-to-use on a mobile device platform!

LAPTOP has been evaluating the performance of Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 on a number of different mobile devices, specifically focusing on how the multimedia player handles various content sources on the new Droid 2. With Apple CEO Steve Jobs' open letter published in late April claiming that Adobe had yet to deliver a Flash Player running well on a mobile platform, there has been considerable interest now that Adobe's much-hyped Flash Player 10.1 is finally making its way to platforms such as Google's Android. Based on LAPTOP's experience on the Droid 2, however, much still seems to be lacking. The report notes that some Flash content, particularly sites featured in Adobe's Flash showcase for mobile devices such as the Sony Pictures movie trailers site, does perform very well. But many others, including ABC.com and FOX.com, deliver jerky video and severe system lag and unresponsiveness. When it comes to Flash-based games, LAPTOP found that many of the games are still designed for non-touch input, requiring keyboard presses and other actions that are simply not possible in the Flash Player mobile experience as currently implemented. Furthermore, simply attempting to load websites with Flash content resulted in slower loading speeds and even hangs that would make high-profile sites like The New York Times refuse to load.

Over three years after the launch of the original iPhone, it appears that Adobe has yet to find a way to deliver a quality Flash experience on mobile platforms. While the partial functionality Flash Player is currently capable of offering might be of use to some, the numerous performance issues and incompatibilities are certainly unlikely to convince Apple to embrace the technology. And it seems reasonable to assume that the longer it takes Adobe to develop a smoothly-functioning Flash Player for mobile, the more sites will make the transition to HTML5 and other accessible standards, reducing demand for the player.

Well, my one hold-out for supporting Flash, home.disney.go.com/tv, has a special version for HTML5. So far the content is just videos, but a buddy of mine that works there says the games are coming. My daughters love the site. When I get an iPad they'll surely be looking to get on that site.

I'm not normally a Steve Jobs fan, I think the arrogant tone he continues to display permeates through Apple and is a turn off, but Steve’s comments about Flash are correct. Adobe could have cleaned up Flash a long time ago, they dragged their feet and if/when HTML5 takes off, it will be too late for Adobe to stop the flood.

funny video. 720p on my 3yo macbook is flawless. I've never had a problem with flash on my laptops, and I am frequently at websites with flash. However, it does drain my battery quickly!

I do not go to websites that use flash on my iphone. Obviously, flash wouldn't work. But, my 3g is way too slow for that type of content.

That video was great and my iMac (early 2008) low end 2.4 Ghz C2D didn't have any issue playing it in full screen 1080p. If mine plays it fine it is hard to believe people with even higher spec'ed machines can't play Flash properly. I think people are just saying that it won't play right because Jobs tells them it won't.

Now try it on a laptop. Better put on headphones - you won't be able to hear the audio over the fan noise (oh, and resting the computer on a hotpad on your legs might make viewing more comfortable too).

No problems here. Non-unibody MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz Core2Duo. Supposedly my graphics chip was supposed to fry itself a while back, too, due to nVidia problems. I haven't had that, either. Perhaps I'm just lucky, or perhaps my laptop can just handle HD muppets with no problem! ;)

I enjoy using many Adobe products. Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks. They are great at creating content that can be viewed on the Web without a proprietary plugin.

Or creating videos that can be viewed on the web without codecs that charge royalties? wink! ;)

Flash Player 10.1 still sucks on the Mac.

It still does kinda suck. But no less than the 3d game performance drop I get while running my laptop in Mac OS vs Windows. :(

You're lucky. Search this forum and you'll find any number of comments that talk about Flash's serious processing draw in OS X and its effect on laptops.

The last time I tested Flash video vs. h.264 processor draw on YouTube on my iMac the difference was significant.

See my last sentence above.

Is there a codec that doesn't charge royalties that wouldn't be in danger of serious patent lawsuits if it were broadly adopted? :(

Seriously, is there ANYONE out there that is shocked by this review ? Flash is just not designed with the mobile space in mind. Nothing in this world is ever going to change that.

The spirit of this site is bashing other devices that are not the iPhone?! What kind of "spirit" is that? Seriously, you said that???? "MacRumors.com is a website focused on Apple news and rumors. "

This sounds like a familiar argument to the iPhone 4's antenna issue.

Steve Jobs - Hey our phone has a problem so we're gonna blame other people. Look at this device it's no better than ours.

iPhone fans like yourself, become immediately defensive when some part of their device is flawed (not having flash). You feel pride when another device has an issue (Droid 2's flash not working correctly). I'm betting you are all scared of these new devices being legitimate competitors to your precious iPhone. I claim no loyalty to Android or Blackberry or, obviously, the iPhone (though I've had one of each for either work or my personal phone), but even the numbers say the others are regaining their respective market share. Clearly they must be doing something to be competitive with the iPhone. I couldn't care less about the performance of flash, I've had issues myself, but keep this kind of "mac rumor" off this site.

The only reason someone in the Apple community should really care that another phone's flash performance is not up to par (whatever that may be), is to put down the device to make yourself feel better about your own phone.

It's not your "darned"site. That article didn't keep even one of your precious little Apple rumors from being posted.Plenty of people,me included are interested in development regarding flash on mobile devices and consider it VERY relevant Apple-related news.

It's called scrolling.Learn how to use it and save yourself some self righteous indignation.

I don't think anyone has the balls to use it. It's too bad, because with Google finally revealing how evil they really are and all that, I was at least hoping to see them really make this fight something worth watching. I think they're more prone to sticking their thumb in Apple's eye whenever they can instead of going toe to toe in a real street brawl.

Shame. I made popcorn and everything.

It's things like this that make me ashamed of even owning a mac. You all go off about how horrible flash is and how great apple is for not having it on their device based on one idiots use of it, and you ignore the fact that even he found quite a bit that worked perfectly. It's not like android forces flash on you, it's net ven installed by default. Why is it that apple fanboys are so vocal and annoying about it. I have a nexus one with flash, no problems with anything i've dried, from games to movies it's all played fine, never made my phone unresponsive, never crashed, and I've ben using it since the earliest beta. At the end of the day it works great, and sure it may have it's problems but if it still is both highly used and a requirement for the full web experience.

But do apple fanboys have any reason? No. and whats worse is that the only reason they have the opinion they have is because apple says so. If apple made a deal with adobe to have flash exclusively you'd insult android for being behind and not having it. You only care to be on apple's side, and it's downright sick.

I really wish Adobe would start supporting the Creative Suite on linux, I'd leave apple in a heartbeat and never look back, the system my be great, the hardware is good, but the community of users is horrible, and I'm sick of having a bad name because the majority want to do nothing but suck jobs off.

And you want to know whats the saddest part of all, they post this stuff because you will all have stupid arguments about it, they entice fanboy fights because it's good for their ad revenue, it's not apple news in any way, it's strictly an android story, but they knew they'd get pages and pages, and you all play your part so well.

The rant not directed at all, just those retarded rabid fanboys, a few (and on this site a very few) of you are actually reasonable, and I have no problem with you.

That's absurd. Tangential relations shouldn't be reported by special interest sites?

Besides, it isn't even a tangential relation. It's pretty direct. The writer of the article directly referenced steve jobs' position on flash.

This also ignores the fact that it seems like you're not here for the mac rumors as much as you are to bash on mac fans. To take a lame argument like "hey this isn't exactly directly related to mac product" and spin it to insult apple users is rather opportunistic.

How are you not as sad since you're throwing yourself in the fray?

Again, it's absurd to say it's not apple news in any way. The writer directly compared it to Steve Jobs' viewpoint. it's absurd to say that tangential topics shouldn't be reported, but this is directly related.

Flash is sometimes jerky so that justifies leaving it completely out?

I have yet to experience poor performance on my Nexus One, even during flash video playback not "optimized" for mobile devices. My favorite part is that you can set the embedded flash to load only when you tap on it first, just like the Click2Flash Safari plugin.

So I don't use it all the time, but it's definitely a nice thing to have when I need it. It delivers a much more "full" web experience while Flash is still in use until web developers get with the times and switch over to HTML5.

But you know. Read this article and drink your little iPhone Kool-Aid or whatever.

In six months, the issues will be gone. This is the first edition to run on the very slow 2.2 OS. Once 3.0 comes out, these smartphones will all be able to run Flash just fine... except the iPhone, unless we jailbreak it! There will be a solution for the iPhone too, but we will have to work around Apple's controls to get it running. All in good time.

Yup. Solution for the iPhone = HTML5.

OMG IM chris200x9 AND I JOINED MACRUMORS 4 YEARS AGO AND AM STILL HERE FOR SOME REASON.

Seriously, 4 years and 800+ posts on a website you are obviously not very pleased with...

Flash on Droid is relevant to apple whether you think so or not. Move on and pipe down. I would expect macrumors to carry this story even if it had the opposite underlying message. If flash works well on a droid, I want to hear about it. I want to see it. If not, I still want to know. It might factor in to buying decisions we make down the road. Your childish indignation over this story's appearance on a mac website is just ridiculous.
