Flip Flopping between macOS and Windows

This weekend is the Massachusetts tax free weekend, where sales tax is waived for most items (under 2,500). I was (am?) semi tempted to buy some computer parts for my linux machine and upgrade it, but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost.

The combo, I have had my eye on is a 7600X3D processor, gigabyte motherboard, and 16gb of ram. I need upgrade my PSU, so that gets added to my cart, and of course a new CPU cooler since what I have isn't AM5 compatible, so another component to buy. At the end of the day I'm looking at 750.

I'm happy with the performance of my PC, and part of my motivation is the fact it will be more expensive next year (or the following year), if I choose to upgrade then.

Oh, I know. I have owned thinkpads in the past. I largely ignore that app (it only sucks up resources) and when it notifies me of a bios update. As I mentioned, I'll ignore the notification because my comptuer is working exactly the way I want it too.

For instance, I recall bios problems with my Thinkpad X1E, where the updates caused the fans to be spin up more aggressively, and louder, for no apparent reason, or issues with thunderbolt connectivity, AFTER the update. I saw these updates and avoided them, I typically visit the support forums and search on the bios updates, that's where you'll see if there's any issues.

At the end of the day, I go by, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and when it comes to flashing bios updates, the risk is that much higher.

I am growing more anxious every day because I am afraid that I am going to lose my data from one drive and get locked out. I am sitting here, looking at alternatives. Linux while really awesome is a no go for me as I can't get the software I need for our businesses that we use. I went on Costco and I can get a MBP 14 M5 24gb/1tb for 2999 cdn. The same price for the inspiron 14s. A mid range dell. The MBP is a no brainer.

I am reading on windows latest and I think MS and Windows are setting themselves up for a big crash with all the Ai bs they are continually cooking into the OS. It's time for me to move from that.

Has anyone ever moved their OneDrive data to the Appleverse? how difficult was it?

It's easier to just never have used it.

I've having the same thought with iCloud and Obsidian was a bit eye-opener on me at how easy it was to migrate to a third-party program.

I've always been suspect with OneDrive, and I have had problems with it. I stuck with it for years, simply because I didn't want to put the effort into moving my data off.

I now have an offline copy of my data, and I'll find a new cloud based home for it. I may move it to iCloud

It would be nice to have a Snowflake for personal cloud.

Good call, i and those tech experts don't see a price reduction or normalcy on any computer part in this decade.

That's largely the reason why I am tempted to upgrade. The fact that listed parts are around 750 dollars in 2026, where as in 2027 they could be 100 or 200 dollars more and in even more in 2028, who knows.

As I mentioned though, I'm largely content with how fast my PC is, and if I need to do any heavy lifting, I have my M4 Max Studio which is an awesome machine in its own right.

How do you guys deal with maintaining a PC (desktop) and a Mac laptop?

I often want to work on the same thing at my desk then later in bed or on the sofa or whatever, and having to go through the faff of managing files (and two systems) is really starting to get annoying.

In this day and age it's not a big deal since most things that are done on PC's (personal computers including Macs) are OS agnostic. You can move between both fairly easily.

I setup a third system. I used a very old pc I had laying around to setup Unraid and Nextcloud. I set it up to be LAN only and share all my files in that.

Alternatively if you have an iPhone and Mac, you can setup iCloud for Windows and share files through that. It works pretty well.

My Linux desktop serves a different purpose as does my Mac, while there's definitely functional crossover, the Mac can do what CachyOS does, and vice-versa.

I seem to enjoy using Linux more, so I spend most of my time there, but there are tasks that the Mac handles better, so I spend some there.

I really don't use a laptop that much anymore, my travel needs have largely evaporated, so I can't really comment too much on dealing with a Mac Laptop along side a PC desktop.
 
So the wife wanted to go Trader Joes, so we headed to cambridge, she went into that super market, and.I went into Microcenter.

The place was a zoo, I was talking to the manager who was basically managing a line of people who were waiting for the next free salesman. I asked, this must be like Christmas, and he said, that it was busier then Black Friday.

I didn't succumb to temptation or the craziness of the place, I walked out empty handed and that's fine. I was not planning on buying anything anyways.

I have been to that Microcenter. I like it. What was making it so busy ?

1) Use cloud programs where possible. This may be your main programs or office programs or ancillary stuff but you have to go through each program and figure out if you can run it from multiple operating systems via cloud or shared folders or some other mechanism. I have it fairly worked out and can switch almost completely seamlessly. The holdouts I have are iCloud Calendar and Downie. I can run iCloud Calender in the browser on Windows which is what I do. I have some alternatives to Downie but none are as convenient or performant as Downie.

2) Maintain a home system so that you can propagate needed files to the other systems. This should mean that you only need to backup one system as you have other backups on your other systems.
 
I'm liking this case, this may be the reason why I build out a new PC.

If I do that, I'll create my own thread, as that type of conversations falls outside of the flip flopping subject of this thread (though I think that topic has long disappeared).

It's the only one in New England though I think that they are sparse in general.

It's near Harvard and MIT and a large tech and biotech community so you have a lot of natural customers. There's also Boston University, Northeastern University, Boston College and a lot of smaller colleges and universities nearby.

I am not a fan of their location as it feels dangerous driving into and out of their parking lot onto Memorial Drive. The colocation with Trader Joe's is an oddity but one person can get groceries while the other person geeks out. I've seen customers pushing out shopping carts with a couple thousand dollars of computer parts before.

I'm at Dana Farber this morning waiting to see my oncologist and I had thought about dropping into Microcenter. We usually go there on Sundays because weekday traffic in Cambridge is usually difficult during the day. An upgrade for me would require motherboard, RAM, CPU and PSU and, like many others, I don't need it. I would like to but it's hard to justify at these prices and anything I build would probably use substantially more power.

The 1.5 times prescription reading glasses arrived. They are better for using very small fonts and resolution but I'd like even better. I'm entering this on a native 4k 14 inch display at 1.25 scaling in Firefox at 140% scaling and the text is sharp, clear and comfortable. I am thinking of trying a pair at 2.25 times or 2.5 times so that I could run at native 4k resolution. I'd only do these experiments with Zenni pricing.
