Maybe mac to mac. But what I have seen from M1 to XPS,
this year i read alot about how fast-responsive and easy the M1 MacBooks are with the ARM chip,
and i would think, so is the Dell XSP with an i5 core- which performed all these tasks which the inter chip ones couldn't?
And i can use this laptop for quite some time under Microsoft' support and blessing!

This morning, I'm expecting a new ssd drive for the Dell XPS
Right now, i'm creating a Windows 10 usb thumb drive.
then going to back up the Dell with a new usbC WD external HD
I'm going to use the ubs c thumb drive first, or can i use the WD-HD?
thanks

I think you would use the USB first. Also, you can create a new clean install key from MS website. You will have full clean MS install. Then load back on your HD files you want back on there. I use onedrive so all my files are backed up there, and on my 14tb server.

thank you, Steve
i might perform a clean install, but spent too much time configuring the specs of the system already.
14 terabites? wow!

Yeah, I would just make an install disk from your machine and call 'er good. Yes 14tb server. I am a photographer, videorgrapher and graphics artist, plus I do marketing for businesses. It's overkill but at least I have enough space for whatever I need. I have a 14tb HDD going into my XPS for storage as well. Should be here next week.

I just picked up a bunch of new gear too, a FZ2500, ricoh sc2 and an exo drone. Also adding 3 go pros to the fleet too for our youtube channel and blog.

i just realized, when im using the MacBook air on these forum as now,
I'm kinda more supportive of  than using the Dell XPS 13'....anyone else?

I find that when Windows reboots to do updates it takes a few minutes all in. When I see macOS needing an update I need to plan in 30+ minutes.

I only know that Windows did an update when my programs aren't on the screen when I come down in the morning. macOS does very few forced updates. It almost always asks for permission to do an update. My Windows system is normally up all the time as it's also the home NAS and basement nightlight.

I have a Late 2009 iMac and never reboot it. It takes forever with the HDD.

I am cool with my dell's doing the updates in the background and me not having to mess with it. Like you, I come down in the morning, grab my coffee and my system is ready and waiting.

every time the MacBook air gets an update, i cringe
while with windows 10 and the Dell i am more relaxed.
mainly because the OSX is not supported by Mojave,
and just a matter of time were i will lose use of some important features.

I have that concern. In fact I know that TurboTax 2022 won't support Mojave so I will have to be on Big Sur or Windows. But I plan to have at least an M1X MacBook Pro to deal with that scenario. I will eventually move off my old hardware when I get the hardware that I want. I could get an Air right now but I know that I'd have regrets.

The only time it will take longer, is if you choose to go up a version, that is 1909 -> 20H2. Regular updates are minor and are done in such a way in windows that I generally never notice. I won't say macOS is worse, or better simply because I've been away too long and my last Mac (a 2015 iMac) is on High Sierra and its too slow as it is. I'm not willing to upgrade and see the performance plummet even further.

My work just gave me a 2019 MBP 15'. Just as I was thinking about building a desktop again, LOL. The back and forth continues. :)

Off topic complaint: Parallels doesn't let me run an instance off an external drive on 2 computers without paying for 2 licenses. !!!!! :(

I didn’t realise apple made them that big!!!
It's massive! I started out with a 11' MBA in 2015 and have had a 13' MBP since 2017.

I'm a little sad that it's only got 16GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive. My personal Mac is 32GB ram and 2TB hard drive. lol.

And not to mention my anger at Parallels. I should be able to use one instance over two computers. .....

The screen space is kinda nice when using it on the lap - I'll have to admit. But its' a lot more work carrying around. I'm just happy to have a Mac for work :).

WHEW!
just installed a WD blue ssd drive on the Dell XPS 9380 and everything went smooth!
the insides are incredible and they even tell you t=what screws to take out on the logic board!
the only hitch was inserting the boot usb thumb drive on the left side, which did not read, so i oved that to the right side, and Viola!
Windows has gotten more friendlier and wants you to upgrade your computers!

My little dell will have 32gb of ram and 2tb SSD soon as well. It's not a powerhouse by any means, but I only paid 549 cdn for it. But it works for us on the road. My editing system is now my xps workstation 128gb of ram, 2tb SSD for programs, 14tb storage drive, and 2 scratch drives for resolve. Should be pretty quick.

I was using VNC to a 2015 MacBook Pro off the Windows desktop for my macOS fix but I went back to using a macOS Virtual Machine as I figured out how to increase the resolution to 2,560 x 1,600. I found a bunch of other resolutions supported by macOS and I'm going to try them out as well.

- 2,880 x 1,620
- 2,880 x 1,800
- 3,072 x 1,920
- 3,200 x 1,800

I do not understand why people have to make plans to update or do it when they need their computer. Just do it before you go to bed or out for the night. People always make updates seem so complicated. Its really easy.

There is no substitute for NOW. :). That's why everyone I know has Amazon prime, right? lol.

I am a big abuser of this because soon as there's an iOS or Mac OS update - I'm updating now. <cough>. Here's to hoping I get wiser with age.

You would think it would be that easy. But when my company policy kicks in for updates, I'm sometimes given a 2 hour notice to restart. And if I don't. . . well, it doesn't listen.

That seems more like a poor company policy if you only get two hours notice. But then, if you are on their time then not a lot you can do.
