So as I look toward 2022 and my work I find myself being pulled back to Windows. I've mentioned a number of times that I prefer working on Windows for my day job. I've had a good run with my M1 iMac but it's now up for sale and the replacement is on it's way.

I've gone for a Lenovo Legion 5i Pro 2022 model which cost me £1480.

Full spec:

  • Processor: 12th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-12700H Processor (E-cores up to 3.50 GHz P-cores up to 4.70 GHz)
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64
  • Display Type: 16" WQXGA (2560 x 1600), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, HDR400, 100%sRGB, 500 nits, 165Hz, LED Backlight, Narrow Bezel, Low Blue Light
  • Memory: 16 GB DDR5-4800 MHz (SODIMM)
  • Storage: 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC
  • Warranty: 1 Year Courier or Carry-in
  • AC Adapter: 300W
  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 3070 Ti 8GB GDDR6
  • Battery: 4 Cell Li-Polymer
  • Bluetooth: Bluetooth® 5.1
  • Camera: 720P Slim HD with Electronic Privacy Shutter
  • Keyboard: 4zone RGB Backlit, Storm Grey - English (UK)
  • Pointing Device: ClickPad
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E 2x2 AX

This will be excellent for work and giving me the freedom to work outside my home office. It also gives me the ability to play some games.

Lastly I've decided to swap my iPhone 13 mini for a Pixel 6. Miss having a larger phone for consuming content and absolutely miss the Pixel camera.

That means the Apple watch will be going as well which I'm not too bothered about. I actually don't like having a device on my wrist that constantly notifies me.

If I were to buy a new laptop this year, the 5i is probably on my short list. Report back on how you feel about the keyboard and how the fans noise is. One thing that bothers me with the Thinkpad extreme is the fan noise.

I like the non-pro version, but the last time I looked its still being sold with the 11th gen cpu.

Nice spec system, definitely handle whatever you throw at it. Depending how heavy you multi task, you may want to bump up the ram later on. My wife has a 2021 blade 15, she’s a project manager by day and a warzone player by night. But she loves to leave a billion chrome tabs open and some other apps in the background while she games. We definitely hit a ram cap when she tries to switch back to her work stuff after shutting the game off.

I'm unimpressed with the M1 Ultra Studio
In which areas would you like it to be better? Visual design, I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. Connectivity ports, I'm happy with. Will have to see noise levels at sustained full load.

It's expensive that I wouldn't impulsively jump on it, will have to see how real world tests go, whether the 48 vs 64 core GPU commands the AU$1500 cost. The most intensive use I have for it is rendering 3D animations such as cinematic interior design renders (only a hobbiest). Maybe eventually I'll get into compositing 3D rendering in real world footage in After Effects. So will also depend on Apple Silicon development of 3D programs. Not that I even need it and my current desktop is more than enough for my current skill level. I just like spending on tech.

Maybe even the M1 Max version would be plenty for me.

My desktop is loud and it annoys me. This is with Noctua fans, fan curves set and with slight under volts.

Had a look at my local pricing for the Ultra, starts at AU$6099 haa.

Its not a better CPU, its not a new CPU. Its a dual CPU setup. I'm not saying the M1 is a bad processor, or the ultra is an inferior design, but its not a new cpu - they just lashed two processors together.

I was going with a windows laptop and due to screen aspect ratio and other things i bottled it and got a macbook air, very pleased with it.

So just my gaming machine stays on windows.

Yeah that's true, I did read discussion somewhere about an option of them scaling up with multiple CPUs. Having a new architecture or generation would have been nice, that will probably debut in the Mac Pro.

Still interested to see how their lashing together of CPUs compares to conventional dual socket motherboard design.

If it falls well short of my current build, then I'll pass.

To be honest, flip flopping in such a short time is not my cup of tea. Not saying I am unable to flip flop since most of my stuff are on the cloud, but it's so much of a hassle to setup everything again. It's even harder on phones as many things like Whatsapp cannot be transferred (right now, it's only from iOS to Samsung with Android 12, not the other way around).

Nor mine, but then my use case is not the same as the OP's. I too prefer windows, but I was looking at the M1 Macs when they first came out.

I do like the Legion 5i, its funny, that laptop has received very good reviews, I've not come across anything negative and the price is excellent. Conversely. while I love my Razer, they do have a poor reputation regarding quality and customer support. On top of that they charge a premium for their products. Their current offerings are in the 3k to 4k range. This is why the Legion is on my short list.

I can't flip-flop. Made sure of that.
I own MBP 16 with M1 Pro, Thinkpad + PC desktop. I get my daily dose of MacOS/Linux and some Windows as needed.
Was all in with Linux, but M1 changed that in a hurry. But couldn't just drop Linux, since I really enjoy using it. And open source game engine called Godot works better in Linux than MacOS/Windows.

So win-win for me. Keeping it all. Easier than transitioning every once in a while like some :D

decided not to rush into it.
I'm a big fan of not rushing a decision, particularly one that costs a lot of money. I've always found, like nearly 100% of the time, that when I rush something, I've regretted it.

I've been sitting on top of a decision to buy the iPad Mini, and secondly, I was all hot to trot to buy the Steam Deck, but in both cases I found that waiting and mulling my decision is better. For the Steam Deck, I'm about 90% sure I'll pass on the purchase for a variety of reasons. If I succumbed to my impulse and emotions, I probably would regret that, since most of the games I play are not even compatible with the steam deck (using their official list) - that would be 700+ dollars down the drain

As for the iPad Mini, I think I'll be taking the plunge on that, but I'm in no rush

Seen a report from a user who has the new 5i Pro and reports that it's hitting 100c and is noisy, glad I held back now. He is returning it.

I thought about it but didn't need it as the performance of my mini 5 is fine. The only thing having me revisiting it is that the battery life is deteriorating. The main thing holding me back is that I've moved towards the USB-C solution and I'd really like an iPad mini with USB-C. The reason for not going to a larger iPad is that the iPad mini fits perfectly on the treadmills that I use.

I have the latest 12.9" iPad Pro, its a fantastic iPad (though the battery performance is lack luster), but its just too big, I tried to make it work. I'll be traveling later this year, and I can't see myself taking that large tablet, the mini fits so much better into my travel plans.

LOL. It shouldn't be surprising. That's what you get with gaming laptops. You get the performance, but you also get the heat and noise. In the end, it's still intel inside and you cannot do magic out of x86.

Heat is why I'm giving up Windows laptop for an Android tablet.

That's the one thing I worry about. I've seen reviews of the 5i and 5i Pro (11th gen processor) and they've been glowing, but my experience with the Thinkpad Extreme is that the fans are very loud, and the temps seem to be somewhat high.

Asus ROG laptops seem to be getting glowing reviews, take a look at those as well.

That's if their fan firmware is solid. They've had a few older models that sound like jet planes all the time and there's no fix.

Nice specs and Lenovo Legion has a great design and build quality but it is a gaming laptop. Which means it is bulky and heavy and full of plastic.

Is the screen plastic or glass?? I hate plastic screens even though they are less prone to cracking they scratch way too easy.

What about battery life?? Seems like it would not last more than a couple hours? I do not see what the capacity is?

That price seems a bit low?? Here in the USA you can only get 11th gen Intel H processors with DDR 4 RAM?? Similar spec device with DDR4 ram and 11th gen processor on sale is around $1900 so I would assume the newer spec model would be over $2K?

I wish we could get the same spec device from Lenovo here in the US! That being said I got my MBP 16" on the student discount and got the base model M1 Max version and am really happy with it. I don't think I could go back to a gaming laptop although the one you have coming sure is tempting!!:)

I'm unimpressed with the M1 Ultra Studio

I'm unimpressed with the entire release. $4k for the M1 ultra box is way too steep if you're not using it for a Final Cut Pro business. And I hate the new Studio Displays even more: 60hz, no HDR, have to pay for CPU and audio you don't need -- and then have to pay $400 more on top of the the $1599/$1899 base price for "height adjustment." Ridiculous.

Also, PC makers are coming out with tremendous OLED and QD-OLED panels with HDR and high refresh rates. Some are half the cost of the Studio Display, and include height adjustment. I've seen only one in person, but, it looked tremendous.

I said in another post, for the first time in a decade, thinking about heading back over to the desktop PC world, building my own. Mac Studio and Display, I don't like the feature set, and I hate the price (the 27" 5k iMac, with a starting price of $1799, is a bargain in comparison). Will keep iPhone, iPad, a Macbook, and Apple Watch, which offer far better value in my opinion.

Costco has the base iMac 27 for $1,749. I'd want the 8-core and I don't think that that's available except on the used market. I don't really need that much power though. I can get quite a bit done on my 2014 iMac 27. The iMac has always been a great value to get into Macs and I think that a lot of folks are sad that they have to go the piecemeal route.
