So we can fly with just our phone, but we can't drive with it.

At this rate, I'm thinking we might drop the need to have a driver's license entirely (because cars are self driving) before we get to the point where a digital driver's license will be seen as good enough.

Colorado has the Colorado app which lets you put your ID, vaccination record, MMJ card and more right on the phone. My ‘wallet’ is nearly obsolete.
When "myColorado" uses FaceID, then it will be good. Like so many other apps, it conveniently forgets your username and password when you need it most, even when the "remember me" checkbox is selected. It also never stores them in keychain so the app is useless. "Wallet" has always worked near flawlessly whenever I needed it.

I like seeing more stuff like this coming to Wallet but I wonder how long it will actually be until I don't need to carry around a physical driver's license?

I have zero hope Illinois will jump on this. Illinois is a cesspool that’s behind on the times.
Yeah as much as I'd like to see this in Illinois, I doubt it would be pulled off well. I'll point to Vax-Verify as my reason for doubt. (I haven't tried using it yet, but I've heard it's a mess)! Heck, we haven't even utilized the exposure notification system 😂 Wisconsin beat us to that one!

This needs close to 100% support to be effective. Imagine flying from one place to another only to find out they won’t except your digital wallet at this particular location.
It's just like everything else - staged rollout. Especially with government agencies.

This probably means the locations that are testing the physical ID readers will be the ones to adopt this first. They are already working on an ID reader that eliminates the need for you to show your boarding card at TSA. This is a logical extension of that test program.

Eventually it will be at all TSA locations. Hopefully. Probably.

This is exciting, not because it will change everything tomorrow, but because within ten years the license will be practically obsolete.

Think back to Apple Pay. It was accepted hardly anywhere (in the US) except for large chains that were partnered with Apple. Heck some companies even turned off their NFC readers so Apple Pay couldn’t be used. Then over time more and more places accept it, and now i don’t even bring my physical cards with me unless it’s for a store I specifically know doesn’t take Apple Pay.

This will be the same thing. Yes you’ll have your DL on your phone but you better carry the physical one, but over time more and more places will accept the digital one and in a few years youll know what places don’t accept digital DL and will only carry the physical one when you go to those places.

So is handing your phone over to a law enforcement officer going to end up being a bad idea?
You tap. Apple has been very clear. Officers have a NFC reader and you Tap your phone (think Apple Pay) which provides the officers your information. You can even do it when the phone is locked.

You don’t hand the cashier your phone when you use Apple Pay.

Makes sense, the LEO vehicles where I live in Florida all have a laptop in them. I'd bet they can get your information by just giving them your name and social anyway and it will pull up your license in a digital image with your photo.. I maybe wrong.

I wish this were true, and I know that's Apple's intention. But I went through the Culver's Drive through, and what do you know, they expect you to hand your phone to the cashier, because the cables were too short :-/.

I get the humor but how often do we leave the house now with a low battery, or let out battery get low when we’re out. That’s like leaving without pants on - you’re just asking for trouble.
Right, but if you're still using your same phone 5 years from now you'll be lucky to get 2 hours of screen on time with it.

We’re finally headed towards the future. I swear my wallet size gets smaller by the year.

Its funny to think how the older generation walked around with a wallet full of cash and cards.

It’s so rare for me to use actual cash these days.
Its to the point I'd rather take a personal check from someone than take cash. I can scan in and get it into my bank account faster.

Yeah no chance in hell. Apple has broken the trust of their customers with their spyware backdoor. They can no longer claim to be about or protect user privacy and security and I will never put my license on their phone.

Aww, 'cmon! You can't let things like technology and reasonable thinking get in the way of the proverbial RATM poster or Che portrait. That makes too much sense. You're not edgy enough for the times, MAN!

Yeah, I’ll keep my physical license on me. It’s going to be hard to show law enforcement a digital license when I’m recording them with my phone.

Might I suggest an in car 360' "dash" camera that is always recording? You don't have to worry about activating it, or holding it in the proper direction, or it being mistaken for a weapon. Just some food for thought. My phone is the last thing I would use to record a potential critical incident I was involved in. You'll all ready have shaky hands, you may drop it, etc. The currently commercially available cameras are portable, so you can use them in a rental or a friend's car, etc.

I might use it in a pinch, but if I had the same concerns as you, I would be investing in something a little more substantial.

As far as the license technology goes, Pennsylvania will have this available about the same time hard line Amish are riding hoverboards with autopilot and all the potholes are fixed. I mean, we DO have the highest gas tax in the country, no reason for Penn DOT to get with the times.
