I don't need to see the numbers anymore, I want to see a mockup size comparison vs. current and previous generations of iPhone. Diagonal measurements alone really don't tell us what the actual folded and unfolded dimensions are.
Links to mockups have been posted in every single thread about the foldable for the past months, including this one.

I understand the frustrations with Cook and the lack of innovation while going all in on Vision Pro. And I also get being annoyed that Samsung is already on their 5th (?) gen foldable. But Apple always plays the long game and waited for the bend/hinge technology to be good enough for Apple, and here we are. I’m excited and looking forward to finally see something different than the typical rectangle phone. We’re here as enthusiasts for the latest rumors, after all.

If Apple vision taught us anything it’s that Apple really doesn’t care about making the most consumer friendly (popular) device possible, but the best the industry can offer. I’m all for that. You either want it or you don’t. Apple is so awesome.

This?

Meh. Althoug, I will say that closing and opening a clam shell phone was such a blast. I know Apple knows this so this device will def hearken back to those days while showing glimpses of the future. Fire.

counterpoint: basic iPhone screen is too big to be a one-handed phone, iPhone Pro Max is too small to be a compelling tablet.

Then this isn’t for you. Pure and simple. You have plenty of other dimensions to choose from.

That’s a really small outer screen. How do they get a 7.8” screen that’s close to that of the Samsung ZFold 7 when their outer screens are so different? What is the aspect ratio of that phone? I would have assumed Apple’s striving for a 4:3 like they do for their iPads. Should that be 6.5” outer screen, not 5.5”, Trendforce? 5.5” is awfully tiny.

Two words. First iteration…

People are going to love the folded size and hate the unfolded size when they realize that this is way too small to be useful for anything. You don’t need two phones side by side. That’s not a tablet, and cannot be used as a tablet. Not even if you pretend.

This is first iteration so yes it does seem modest, but in this case (folding movable parts) modest appears best. Go Apple.

  1. People who love iPad mini, wish it could fit in their pocket, and don't want also carry around a phone.
  2. People who want a "no-compromise small phone". I can have a one handed phone when I'm mobile and then open it up to a bigger screen when I can sit with two hands.
  3. People who like shiny and different but want Apple to do it.
Other folding phones don't really hit these marks.
  1. Flip phones are unusable folded and just an normal phone size unfolded.
  2. Other Fold style phones are normal giant phones already and then unfold into a terrible tablet aspect ratio.

Yea, this is also for mailmen who need something a little more substantial to throw at would be biting dogs. Yikes.

I would love to see the iPhold have the ability to also store a telescoping Apple Pencil...

Oh *****k yeaaaah….definitely hope they allow pen use here. My boy stays with ugly gross android spy crap because of pen use smh

These numbers are meaningless without corresponding aspect ratios.
If you know the diagonals of both displays (5.5" and 7.8") and you assume the inner screen is basically two outer screens next to each other, you can calculate the aspect ratio of each.

The aspect ratio is similar to Google Pixel Fold that had a 5,8" screen closed and 7,6" open.
Called the passport ratio that apparently Marques Brownlee liked to use closed.
I first "got" the fold experience with that one as photos/videos looked great unfolded.
As it didn´t sell in my country I never got one, and the next one was more square unfolded so it looked like a normal phone closed, but still pretty nice.
I´m watching this with interest, even though it seems a bit on the small side right now.

The renders of the device with a passport like aspect ratio that unfolds into an iPad mini are interesting and what I’ve been calling for on the forums for years. However, I feel like for me personally there are going to be too many drawbacks:
  • Price, expected to be $1999+ for BASE storage
  • Durability
    • Inner display scratch resistance
    • Overall device durability, as in how well can cases work with this?
    • Lack of adequate waterproofing
  • Missing features, such as rumored lack of additional rear camera
  • Additional thickness when closed
  • Rumored lack of Face ID
And questions that are a bit more unknown:
  • Will it be MagSafe compatible?
  • Will it be full iPadOS when open or restricted?
  • Will we see issues with their first gen hinge design? Hinge gate? LOL
  • What other features will it be missing that you can get on a much cheaper Pro model?
  • Will this design help or hinder the battery life? I’m especially interested in battery life when open. Should be on 2nm chip process which will help.
I just don’t see myself getting this thing unless the price hits better or it otherwise just blows me away. Unfortunately I don’t see either happening. I’m sure I will own one someday, but I think I will pass on the first couple generations.

Come on - this product will make it into the stores in 2026/2027 for an insane price. Until then will see one or two improved iterations of the Galaxy Fold. An 7th Gen foldable phone with almost no crease right now. Apple simply can not compete with this technology - neither now, now in 2026 or 2027.

Additionally the OS must undergo heavy changes to support multiple displays. Some things may have to be borrowed from iPadOS - since unfolded it becomes an iPad that should be able to compete with an iPad. So what will we see iPadOS merged back into iOS? A complete mess?
Apple has adaptive layout constructs associated with SwiftUI to handle such a foldable device for quite some time. Many apps built with Web tech will seamlessly accommodate the device via responsive/adaptive Web design constructs such as the CSS grid and flex box specs

There's some amazing renders by @iZac in the below thread.

I can see why apple is pursuing that particular form factor; to keep their aspect ratios consistent; but the passport shape is going to take a lot of getting used to for people.

Too late, Apple.

I was iPhone user since 2007 and had endless iMacs, MacBooks Pro, iPads, Apple Watches, TVs, Homepods etc.

I wrote endless reviews since 2011 and always supported Apple and iOS and suggested those to friends.

Last week I got the Galaxy Fold 7 with the UI8 and newest Android.

It fells like Apple was sleeping for the last decade.

The Apple Fold will not change anything.

I expect a hands-free AR/AI device around 2030, wich will completely change the way we communicate, search, work and have fun.

Since this will not happend with Tim being a CEO, I'll stay with Samsung for a long while.

This argument that Apple waits until technology is ready might have been true with Jobs, but with Tim Cook it has been disproven time and time again. Apple is just late to the game, it doesn’t release stuff when technology is ready and ‘good enough’. The best example is Apple (un)intelligence, released much later than the main competitors not because Apple was waiting for technology to be ready or had something amazing up the sleeve… it was just unable to develop something as good as the competitors (and still is, to the point where it’s rumoured to just license the competitor’s technology)… and still is. Another example is Vision Pro: Apple was late to the game and what for? A visor with a higher resolution (which Apple didn’t develop as it bought the part), but smaller vision angle, significantly heavier than the market average and despite this with a ridiculous external battery (with proprietary connector because why not) and no controllers and an insanely high price point. Unsurprisingly it flopped.

I suspect this foldable iPhone will be the same: technologically inferior and less reliable than the competitors who have been perfecting the technology for years now, and despite this outrageously expensive.

iPhone 16 Pro Max has 6.9 inch screen am I correct? So the inner screen would be 0.9 more and more square which is problematic. But 5.5 outer means closed it could be a pretty compact phone like iPhone Mini. That might actually be interesting.

Guessing more crash n burns like the AVP. What a weird couple of years. Very kooky and kinda interesting for its time (which said ‘Apple’ in a newton 2000 / toilet seat tangerine laptop manner with those outward facing virtual eyes) but hideously overpriced VR goggles were followed by crappy AI and an overpriced & feature poor 16e ‘budget phone’. Next up an even more overpriced featureless phone and a hideously overpriced phablet folding phone. All this on top of your idiotic orange fascist’s tariff war. All the best burning through the cash reserves and hawking this line up, Tim 🥶

Apple's first foldable iPhone will be equipped with a 7.8-inch inner display, and a 5.5-inch outer display, according to Taiwanese research firm TrendForce.

Foldable-iPhone-2023-Feature-Iridescent-1.jpg

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo already mentioned those same display sizes for the foldable iPhone in March, meaning there are now multiple sources backing those sizes, so long as TrendForce is not simply copying what Kuo said.

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 has an 8-inch inner screen, and a 6.5-inch outer screen.

TrendForce said Apple will likely launch the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026, so the device could debut in September of next year.

Last week, Kuo said the foldable iPhone (and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8) will feature a "crease-free" inner display. He said Apple will achieve this feat by using a laser-drilled metal display plate, which can disperse the stress generated by bending.

Kuo expects the foldable iPhone to have two rear cameras, one front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID.

Foldable phones are definitely one of the things I never had any interest in.
If I want an iPad, I’ll buy one.

Not at the rumored price of around $2000 I think. You can get a Pro Max and an iPad mini for that money. And it isn’t a replacement for the larger iPads, even if they increase the foldable size a bit in the future. An 11” iPad folded in half doesn’t fit into anyone’s pocket.
Why would I want many devices when one device will do everything? I spent way more on iPhone and iPad Pro than just an iPhone Fold would cost. I want one device that does it all not an ecosystem of anticompetitive bullying to make shareholders wealthy.

Looking at the price of Samsung foldable and the price of Iphones in general, then the price of a foldable iPhone is going to be crazy. I would not pay the price for a foldable and to be honest, the 3 people I know that had one, all of them have had problems with the hinge or the screen, so nope, not for me.

The renders are beautiful, big thanks to the artist. But that form factor for me is awful. That is like Microsoft Surface Duo which was hideous device.

If the 5.5 outer is true.....that's not good.....this has been the number one complaint since Samsung's foldable first debuted was how it's difficult to use the outer screen at that dimension. The new Fold 7 is the perfect outer display. I've spent a lot of time with one, if Apple doesn't match that this isn't going to be a good start to their foldable. They've had years to perfect this, why not get it right the first time. Samsung did it for them!

Am I the only one who doesn’t care about diagonal screen size? I’m more concerned with the overall length and width of the screen. A 7.8” diagonal, but at what angle? Let me geometry it out 🤣

eh. Too small for a phone, too small for a tablet, all while being chunky to carry and will be under spec compared to the iPhone 18 pro max.
