“Touch ID power button instead of Face ID’

What?

That’s a showstopper for a phone. I would never go back to Touch ID.

Plus what has Face ID got to do with a bendable screen? It works by a camera and the phone will always need a front camera.

This looks like the Microsoft Duo...
I think that's why I'm actually looking forward to this device - I always wanted a Surface Duo, but I'm stuck in the walled garden. I know I'm really in the minority here, but I liked that form factor.

I know it will be about ~20mm wider than an iPhone mini, but I'm so desperate that I'll take anything other than the big ol' slabs that phones have become. It might be cool to use it Nintendo DS style too, flipped up sideways.

funnily, i owned a nano2 and a nano4 and disliked the aspect ratio of the nano3.

It'll be interesting to see whether apple maintains their rounded corners. Since it's not possible to do that on all 4 corners on the folded device, and having a device that's square on one side, round on the other, and a screen that's rounded and inset will look a tad odd.
Yea I’ve been wondering about that too. I think iOS 26 made a big stink about concentric corner radius in the UI matching the radius of the device. They said something about it being programmatic now. So theoretically Apple may be able to release a more square device and the UI would just match it. But not sure. If they were going to do that then Id imagine macOS 26 would reflect that.

As a shareholder, hope Apple gimps capabilities on the larger screen so as to not cannibalise iPad sales. The fold should not substitute a tablet.

Canabalizing iPod sales by introducing a phone that was also an iPod worked out pretty well for them.

I can’t really understand the mindset of worrying that Apple caninalizing sales of their worst selling iPad with a more expensive combination phone and iPad mini would be bad for stocks.

Clam-shell I understand. Two screens on one phone though, it seems over-complicated, over-engineered and gimmicky.
Well, most people almost never need the unfolded screen, and it's cumbersome to open/close all the time and you can't just glance at things. Therefore Android manufacturers realized they have to put a second screen outside for everyday use. What they actually should have realized: the whole concept is bad. People who are ok with carrying heavy items can as well just put an iPad mini in their bag and use a normal phone.

Why would I want many devices when one device will do everything? I spent way more on iPhone and iPad Pro than just an iPhone Fold would cost. I want one device that does it all not an ecosystem of anticompetitive bullying to make shareholders wealthy.
Because many people don't want a foldable screen (foldables have only around 1.5% market share), want the convenience for an iPad at home to not have to unfold it first, and also want a smaller, less heavy phone, which then would also be cheaper than the Pro Max example even with the iPad mini added. Things would be different if you could get a foldable for the price of a Pro Max. But as it stands, I don't foresee much cannibalizing.

There's some amazing renders by @iZac in the below thread.

I can see why apple is pursuing that particular form factor; to keep their aspect ratios consistent; but the passport shape is going to take a lot of getting used to for people.
Even though in these renders the phone would be shorter than the iPhone Pro Max, it will be wider. I don't see many people wanting a wider phone than the PM. I never really liked the feel of the PM's I owned in my hand or in my pocket. I definitely wouldn't want a wider phone.

It looks like the 247 people who bought the Mini's will finally be able to stop complaining about Apple not making a smaller phone anymore! Hip, hip, hooray!!!! This Fold will sell like hot cakes due to this. /s Please, pretty please release this Apple Fold with the rumored dimensions, so some of us can have some peace in the comment threads.

If you’re only using your phone 50 minutes per day, this might not be for you. It would be hard to justify paying 2x the price of an iPhone Pro. Unless you use a iPad more than your phone, then this could potentially be your two-in-one.

I feel self conscious now because my weekly usage report puts me at 6+ hours per day
It's high time to touch some grass my friend. That is not good.

The rumored dimensions and screen sizes are similar to the original Google Pixel Fold. If you want to see what that looks like, there are real world photos all over of that phone. This isn't rocket science. 😂 Here you go...

Of course it might have smaller bezels and what not, but in terms of the form factor and screen sizes, the PF is going to be very close if the rumors come to fruition. I owned the PF, and I always felt like it was the only foldable I had owned at that point that Steve Jobs may have signed off on...if it was an Apple designed device of course.

Regarding the 5.5" outer display: because of the different aspect ratio, the screen area is nearly the same size as the 6.1" screen of an iPhone 16. It's about 1% smaller ((2088*1422)/(2556*1179)=0.99).

  1. People who love iPad mini, wish it could fit in their pocket, and don't want also carry around a phone.
  2. People who want a "no-compromise small phone". I can have a one handed phone when I'm mobile and then open it up to a bigger screen when I can sit with two hands.
  3. People who like shiny and different but want Apple to do it.
Other folding phones don't really hit these marks.
  1. Flip phones are unusable folded and just an normal phone size unfolded.
  2. Other Fold style phones are normal giant phones already and then unfold into a terrible tablet aspect ratio.
If it’s a completely one handed phone folded it’s a winner. This “passport” ratio is too wide for that and will be very compromised.

Fold 7 is an incredibly appealing device right now.

We are all assuming that it will have one fold.
One fold works if the outer screen is wide and squat.

Two folds might work but would also be weird. It'd produce a device with an outer screen that was less than 1.95" wide while iPhone mini is 2.25" and the screen would be about as tall as the mini is including it's bezels.

Not sure that's much more appealing. Maybe?

If we wanted to keep 5.5" and iPhone mini aspect ratio the inner screen size would have to get larger. Need to be about 8.5"

People are able to hold a phone that's as wide as the iPhone 16 pro max. This would be about that wide potentially. It'd be less tall so it's like using that phone in reachability mode.

I don't think I'd like it much either but It seems like it could pass for one-handed. Honestly I think I still just want an updated iPhone mini. But this might be the only thing that's close to a "small phone" for a long time.

I don't get why the fold 7 is appealing. It has a 6.7" outer screen and its body is about 2.87" wide, which is wider than iPhone SE 3rd gen I think. Certainly wider than the iPhone 13 mini.

So a smaller out display is smaller the Samsung one. Samsung will be better. It’s perfect the size now. 5.5 is to small for our display and 7.8 isn’t much bigger
7.8 is a lot bigger than it is now and 5.5 will be wider so you will still get good content

This argument that Apple waits until technology is ready might have been true with Jobs, but with Tim Cook it has been disproven time and time again. Apple is just late to the game, it doesn’t release stuff when technology is ready and ‘good enough’. The best example is Apple (un)intelligence, released much later than the main competitors not because Apple was waiting for technology to be ready or had something amazing up the sleeve… it was just unable to develop something as good as the competitors (and still is, to the point where it’s rumoured to just license the competitor’s technology)… and still is. Another example is Vision Pro: Apple was late to the game and what for? A visor with a higher resolution (which Apple didn’t develop as it bought the part), but smaller vision angle, significantly heavier than the market average and despite this with a ridiculous external battery (with proprietary connector because why not) and no controllers and an insanely high price point. Unsurprisingly it flopped.

I suspect this foldable iPhone will be the same: technologically inferior and less reliable than the competitors who have been perfecting the technology for years now, and despite this outrageously expensive.
Good points! I agree with you.

I think a lot of people might miss this post because they don’t read or don’t click links, so I added the pictures from his creation.

I think this is the most accurate depiction of what we might get next year!

TBH I don’t mind carrying something the size of a passport around much of the time as long as it’s thin. This is much thicker and unlike a passport is a mostly rigid device aside from the folding screen. That this concept unfolds to a 3:2 or 16:9 screen is quite clever. I’m on board with this. We need shorter devices! My 15 Pro (not Max) can’t be paired with certain pants because it’s too tall and likes to jump out of the front pocket.

Well. I am the type of customer that uses an iPad most of the time and take it with me everywhere. I would just have an iPhone Fold and only carry the iPhone Fold. I mean it will make Apple the same money but then the ecosystem becomes less relevant.

it will literally be almost identical in screen size to the first five generations of iPad mini, I think people will find it perfectly acceptable.
7.8 inches with a 4X3 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2713X1920.
The original iPad Mini was 7.9 inches with a 4X3 aspect ratio at a 2048X1536 resolution.
so not only will the screen be almost identical in size and aspect ratio, it will be significantly higher resolution as well.
I think you're misunderstanding the numbers because of unwarranted hopefulness.
