While that's technically true, I think it's very difficult to draw that conclusion.

There are essentially three test conditions:

1) Bluetooth paired only (iPhone 17/Air)
2) Stereo output + Bluetooth paired (iPhone 13 to iPhone 16)
3) Neither stereo output nor Bluetooth paired (iPhone 12 and older)

If "stereo output" does not mean speakers, then what does it mean in condition #2?

Bluetooth headphones can be paired to keep the BT chip active as part of the battery test. This is similar to why the Video Playback test (non-streaming) includes association with Wi-Fi. It's a local file being played back, so why connect? To keep the chip active.
There’s no way that a 27-hour-long battery test uses the iPhone’s speakers.

Speakers destroy battery life. In fact, other than gaming, listening to music (or YouTube or whatever) with speakers will destroy battery life even with a fully optimised iPhone.

I know, as mine is optimised and my 16 Plus gets 27 hours of SOT. I don’t care about speakers so I don’t use them, but if I were to use them, I don’t think I’d get half that. Speakers are that awful. If you want good battery life and speakers, pair the phone with Bluetooth Speakers. Not only will they sound better, but battery life will have a massive boost.

It works for me, but I have a very specific use case / niche that I don't know applies very widely:

- I have been buying the Plus and Pro Max models as long as they've been an option, because my biggest priority in the phone has been a screen larger than the base model + 120Hz when that became an option

- I am a professional photographer and have several cameras for when I want to take more serious photos than cat photos or snapping a pic of a receipt or something

- I work from home and my phone generally sits on a charging dock on my desk. In the car, I have a charger. If traveling, I already have tons of chargers and power banks on-hand for other items (like aforementioned camera gear).

- I don't game on my phone or do anything that would warrant vapor chamber cooling.

- I do want 12GB of RAM over the base iPhone 17's 8GB, just in case any Apple Intelligence features get locked behind the difference or any non-Apple LL models come out that can run well locally and integrate with iOS.

- My current Pro Max does get taxing on the hand when holding it for a while. Bad joints in my hands over the years.

- Frankly, aesthetics is a factor too. I wanted a black phone, dammit. I rock my phones caseless, and I don't really like the look of the iPhone 17 Pro/Max and really don't like the available colors. This would mean getting a Pro Max + a black case, which only exacerbates the size difference between the two options.

So for me, it does everything I need it to do, while still being a bit bigger than the base model iPhone (screen-wise). I fully admit I'm taking a bit of a leap here after a string of Pro Maxes that I have been very happy with, but worst case scenario, I do a return in 14 days or go back to Pro Max next year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have carpal tunnel stuff going on and I'm hoping it's more comfortable to use than the 15 Pro.

If I'm really let down by the camera, battery, speakers, etc., I'm fully prepared to return it and just stick with the 15 Pro or perhaps consider the base 17. I won't buy a heavier phone unless there is no other option.

I can relate to most of this except the professional photographer part. I also bought a couple Pluses, heavy gaming is on PC only, I WFH, and with 120 hz and slightly larger screen than the base pro I'm happy. And yeah, the air is a thing of beauty this time around. I'm not worried about battery or heat, because, come on, "gaming" for me is Wordscapes maybe....I doubt this thing will even break a sweat with that.

Same here, I’ve had operations and have been left with complex regional pain syndrome, it comes and goes and is reactive to how heavy an item is.

The release of the Air has given me the chance to have a device that’s thinner, lighter and larger than the smaller Pro model whilst still being powered by the A19 Pro & have 12gb of RAM + 120hz Promotion and gorgeous design.

Whilst lacking the Pro’s camera system set up, I’m confident the 48mp fusion camera will produce some excellent shots.

I just bought an Air with ATT next-up anytime. My reasoning is: actually increasing battery life with the add-on battery??, which is removable. Modular.

The main reason is, I pay for the stupid next-up, so there's that.

This is why I think Apple being health focused is coming through when they know the Pro Max is getting heavier and heavier, in a few more years it's gonna put bowling balls to shame.

I’m tempted to get it, but I’m worried about the titanium frame generating too much heat. If it were aluminum, the thermodynamics would be better, but it would also be less rigid.

The frame is what attracted me initially, the Cloud White frame resembled the Stainless Steel from the Pros of yesteryear, heavy yes, but I thought they were the best looking, can't remember when that was, the 12's maybe?

Have you had heat issues? I haven't, but I've had weight issues. You get used to that though. To a point.

I’ve had heat issues when it comes to using Qi power banks. That’s why I’m a little apprehensive about the combination of the titanium frame and the MagSafe battery pack.

But I love the way the phone looks. Maybe I’ll wait for next year’s model.

I’m sure Apple have designed it in such a way that over heating isn’t going to be a big problem (I hope) lol.

I don’t game or do anything that will push the processor to its limit for prolonged periods.

It’s certainly a very well engineered device and it looks stunning.

I can’t wait! 🤩😃

If we take Joz and Ternus at their word with the cnet or toms hardware guy (too lazy to review), it’s less compromise than people would assume. Not just structurally but feature set and capability wise

Thank goodness for the 14 day return policy in case they are bluffing

Just pre ordered the white one, and can’t wait to receive it. Coming from iPhone 13 (not pro) so the upgrade will be HUGE.

I will order the brown NOMAD magnetic leather backcover, and the brown Andar - The Aspen leather cover. No screen protection.

i’m going with the white. i work from home so i have no worry with battery life. currently have the 16 pro and i barely use the camera, so i don’t mind the camera features this phone will lack. this is enough phone for me, and i appreciate the change in design (meaning, i was sold on it solely based on the thinness). ordered it right at 8am EST this morning and i look forward to holding it for the first time!

I figured they would have already thought of this. But the Pro-fanboy reviewers will push it to it's limits and then claim "See! It overheats".

I wouldn’t really rely on those tbh. They made power efficiencies for the built in things like video playback.

Once you start running normal apps etc it’s not going to be as efficient. Unless you never go below say 40% on your current phone id expect to need the MagSafe pack or to charge through the day. I think that’s realistic.
This will be key. Is the iPhone Air's battery life effectively the same as the iPhone 16 Pro, in most / realistic use cases. Is the video test representative enough? Or are you said, is it misleading because video playback is ultra-optimized?

Good post, I had pretty much exactly the same thought process. I just ordered the Cloud White iPhone Air 256gb, which will replace my Silver/White 15 Pro Max 256gb.

- I want the bigger screen (15PM was the first big screen iPhone I got), before this my prior phones were 13 Pro, 12 Pro, X. The 15PM is "ever so slightly too big" if I'm being super picky. One-handed use on occasion is difficult, but manageable. I'm hopeful the Air's 6.5" screen, being in between the Pro's 6.3" and Pro Max's 6.9", will be the goldilocks size!

- Still get ProMotion. Agreed, this probably would've been a dealbreaker for me it didn't have ProMotion. Can't go back, especially on an iPhone, after having had 120hz for so long!

- 95% of my photos use the Main Wide angle lens. Maybe 5% of my photos used the 5x Telephoto on my 15PM. I can deal with just having the 1x / 2x here, especially since it can still do portraits

- I never use the speaker on my iPhone. I'm always using my Airpods or playing music through Sonos speakers at home. I also pretty much exclusively use the phone with my Airpods too, so no issues with potentially worse microphone

- Aesthetics - agree I don't like the look of the 17 Pro and Pro Max. And I really like the look (and I expect the feel) of the Air. There was an early hands-on video I saw where they said, "feeling is believing". I think there will be value in the newness of having this, something that hasn't existed in many years with the iPhone. I expect for the first few months, a bunch of ppl will ask if they can hold it / check it out. Obviously, this last point shouldn't be a significant or deciding factor in whether you get one... but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a small part of the equation! More fun in being a pre-order / getting it the 1st day!

Thanks, so it confirms what I feel, that they've thought about all this already.
Yes, don’t worry it’s been very well designed and engineered 👌🏻

BTW, a tech blogger out your way Mark Ellis is really excited about the Air also.

Not heard of him, where can I see his stuff? I’ve not been this excited for an iPhone release for a long time 😃
