I did not expect the "flat" design to look like this either.

The colors are too much for me... it's like I'm on psychedelics again. :p

It's a bit too colorful for me. Too bad there isn't a black and white only option, because that would look pretty sweet.

Anyways seeing this is how it's going to be, might as well get used to it.

Now we just need every developer to make their icons flat or it will look very mismatched.

I have not read if there is a positive or functional reason for the flat/kiddie look

Is there a functional reason for the flat look?
No choice in phone size?
Microwaving/reheating/5s vs a actual new and better iPhone?
Seemingly little inovation and much stagnation.
The new Mac Pro is cool looking but is it practical cost wise, and will it be practical to get RAM and whatever else people will want to change or upgrade? And are most people switching to tablets and over sized laptops/all in ones/disposables?

Or has apple been penetrated by corporate ninjas with the orders to destroy apple from with in?

I am a Apple fan... but it seems my Apple joy is fading as all things must.

Get used to being an underserved minority. No company as large as Apple should design products for the fringe groups.

I and all the beta testers I know think this new OS is FANTASTIC.

I just don't see being so upset over icons. There are so many more important things in life to be concerned with.

This! In the end it is just a phone. That is all it is. I am sure everyone will be ok with the new design. And if you aren't, there are alternatives.

Remember the shock at the first sight of the iPhone 4? How different it was from the beloved 3GS, how people said Apple had got it wrong but it turned out they got it right? We'll it's the same now, iOS 7 is a joy, I can't believe how old fashioned and outdated iOS 6 is, and I loved that! IOS 7 will only get better, enjoy the ride guys, it's gonna be amazing.

I hope iOS7 has a 'dark' theme option because the current one looks like something designed for a 12 year old girl.

I'm loving the new look. Downloaded it an hr ago and it's simply 1000 times better. If you can design a better home screen in an hr, i'd suggest looking at apple's website for a job. Maybe you can put your talents to use :)

Yeah, apple would be so impressed by his design, that I can imagine tim cook firing all the dozens of UI designers and hiring him instead.

Just the amount of arrogance these people show is astonishing. We know they don't like iOS 7 and they have their own opinions, but come on. You can't just simply design a whole UI by yourself and think you'll do a better job.

well my biggest gripe are the icons... as it seems to be yours.

my phone is also JB and i have decided to keep it this way for the time being.

when the time comes in 3 or 4 months time and the icons still look this silly i will make a decision - either wait for a JB and theme the icons (if everything else from iOS7 totally amazes me) or switch over to android.

i like minimalistic themes but i agree with you that this is beyond cheap. i mean look at that calendar icon? i could do one in paint just like that right now in under 5 minutes. there has to be some real polish taking place between now and release day for me to stick with iOS.

The fact that most of the people have distilled most of their criticisms from the system-wide designs to just the icons tell me one thing: Apple did a good job.

What do we do? What can we do? I'm shocked, disappointed, sad, angry, and helpless. Just a mix of emotions.

I cannot imagine using this UI everyday, I love my 4S and while I was dreaming of a Flat UI style iPhone.. i never expected this. This is not flat, this is plain, boring, amateurish, ridiculous.
I can design a better home screen in an hour.

There are so many things wrong with the UI, i don't know where to begin. I'd prefer the previous UI with the new iOS 7 functionalities, than this UI any day.

I always looked to Apple for design, but this is unexpected.
I'm considering sending Tim Cook an email, maybe everyone who feels the same way should too.

I'm planning on waiting for a jailbreak and I plan to use my own icons or use other designer ones in Cydia, but I really thought that I would never have to jailbreak again after iOS 7.
It's ironic, now i'll be jailbreaking to style the UI instead of the functionality of the OS.

If heavy skeuomorphic design is bad, then god this is the extreme on the other end. Where is the middle ground?

How are you dealing with this?

Do you have the beta downloaded?

Icons I can live with...all the bright white and lack of contrast is hard on my 40 year old eyes...add that to the thin font and I can hardly see my phone anymore.

You can take a deep breathe and go play outside in the sunshine. Our devices are lovely to use and iOS 7 doesn't change what you already know in that sense.

Disappointed is fair enough but all the other reactions are borderline absurd? Breeeeeeeathe. It's a phone.

Please...making light of the incredible, gigantic, life changing, monstrously important issue in discussion.

This is life and death stuff, here...and you have the nerve to suggest that a bit of perspective be taken!

I'm appalled, and suggest that you please abstain from such reasonable and sensible posting...immediately!

Going to work today was a struggle, my life if now sad and lonely and all I kept thinking was how can Apple betray me like this, I trusted them with good design and this is how they treat me, by giving me this new UI.

At this point I don't even know if I will even want to get out of bed in the morning.

As soon as the keynote ended I took one long look at my iOS devices and shed a tear, just knowing what is coming, I can't even bare to use my devices anymore.

Why did Apple do this, I asked myself over and over. Doesn't Apple know what with 600 million iOS devices sold-to-date, my opinion matters the most.

Contemplating what to do next, should I go Android? maybe Windows Phone?

What can I do to get what I want back,

Then, a moment of clarity came over me. This is just software on a hardware device and that I need to get over myself.

Then I downloaded iOS 7 and enjoyed it immensely.

Post of the year. You win. We need to lock this thread down, because you just won the internet. :)

I didn't look at it that way before. I should show myself out! ;)

If you can do better in an hour - well, I guess we can all come back in an hour and see what you've made.

Just Went Back To iOS 6

I installed iOS 7 on my iPhone 5 as soon as it became available in the Developer downloads on Jun 10. After using it for almost 2 weeks, I just went back to iOS 6.

Both the color scheme and the UI felt incredibly harsh on my eyes and I couldn't take it any longer. I'm also not happy with all the white everywhere, such as the Calendar month view and the Contacts app. Less importantly, I also think some of the icons are laughably bad.

Apple should allow users to customize the appearance of the UI of iOS 7, such as the background color. For example, my eyes much prefer the gray background in the iOS 6 Calendar month view, and when looking at a Contact's info in iOS 6.

I look forward to seeing improvements to the iOS 7 Beta software.

So from what I gather, clearly not a lot of people here are as passionate about design as I am. Which is fine.
My OP was my initial reaction to iOS 7. So to any that might feel that my emotions are "overboard" it's because I truly enjoy design and looked up to Apple in that sense. I design as a hobby.

If you liked iOS 7, and thought it was fine, then you could just not reply, as I clearly stated in the title of the thread; "For those that do not like the iOS 7 UI". This thread wasn't meant for you, it was meant for the few who thought the same way as I did.
I use my iPhone a lot everyday, and I couldn't imagine seeing that homescreen every time i unlocked the device. So yes, it was a big deal to me.

lol.

Wow. Pretty extreme reaction for an unreleased piece of phone software isn't it?

And I'm guessing you've come to this conclusion having used the beta since last night yes?

Go on then.

I'm using it, and am thoroughly impressed with the changes made. This is the biggest change to iOS for the better since the first iPhone. The slick animations, the typography, the new design for the inbuilt apps - they've listened.

The fact that this is what launched as a Beta 1, shocks me. I'm glad to hear that iOS 7 will look better by the GM.

Jesus Christ. Talk about 1st world problems and losing perspective

There are many things in life that are worth being sad, angry, and feeling helpless... being laid off, losing a loved one, encountering violence, etc... a smartphone UI isn't one of them ;)

Hey dude, if i wanted to bitch about the world I could do that in many forums. I'm here to talk about Apple, about iOS 7. I haven't lost any perspective.

You sound like the type of people who don't allow anyone to complain because there are children in Africa who are starving and we're talking about design on an iPhone.

Well, you made me laugh a little.

I am sorry and I hope you are no more than 14 years old, and a girl of course :D

No, i'm a straight adult male. But very passionate about design. Thought I would talk about the problems with like-minded people. But i guess that didn't happen.

Yeah, apple would be so impressed by his design, that I can imagine tim cook firing all the dozens of UI designers and hiring him instead.

Arrogance? There is nothing arrogant about saying that one could design a better homescreen for iOS 7 than what Apple has done. There are a lot of people who can, who are designers as a profession.

You can take a deep breathe and go play outside in the sunshine. Our devices are lovely to use and iOS 7 doesn't change what you already know in that sense.

I couldn't ever imagine using that day to day at work. I'm very passionate about design, and those were my initial reactions to it.
I'm just feeling disappointed now.

OP I dare you to make a better software in an hour

I can't do it, but that doesn't mean that I cannot complain about it.

If you can do better in an hour - well, I guess we can all come back in an hour and see what you've made.

He made a mess on the carpet.

I would when I have time. But some friends of mine who are much more talented than me already have on Dribbble, check them out.

Can you guys throwing the word "skeumophic" around actually go look up and then interpret it please.

Too many people getting that confused with textured design. In fact in many ways iOS 7 could be the MOST skeumophic the way things are layered, zoom, etc for a very organic experience.
