Of course, all your points are valid. However, if I purchase a new phone, I want a new phone. I don't want to get a white box replacement on the same day my phone arrived and have it no longer match the fancy retail box. If my phone comes bad out of the box, I want another new one, but I'm probably in the very tiny minority on that.

And I absolutely get your point in regards to forcing us towards mobile share eplans and NEXT installment plans. That makes sense, and the "out" is for them to still offer the 2 year upgrades themselves, tucked away on their own website.

For me personally it doesn't matter what kind of box it comes out off or if the serial won't match my original box once I get it replaced.
All it matters is if it functions correct.
I'm not ocd picky with yellow screens, blue screens or other nonsense some people stress about;)

The problem with all these finance options are that not everyone is financially responsible. So if they make it easy for everyone to jump on a 24 month finance cycle for a phone is all the additional resources used by carriers and now apple to setup those plans and dealing with payments, the accounting part and with many people that will just stop paying or pay late and many many other issues that will come up worth it? Who's going to eat the loss once all these people get the phone and a month later stop paying on it?
Unless they make it strict and depend on a customers credit history and let those with bad credit not able to get a device that they might default on paying on.

I believe this is why they want to activate the phone on a major carrier. We haven't seen the finance agreement, but I bet there's a clause so they can always brick the phone, then the only option for the deadbeats is to sell the phone used to some unsuspecting fool.

so....grandfathered plans can't pre-order through apple basically?

cause i can't upgrade until december through att

Sure you can pre order. You just can't get the 2 year AT&T contract with subsidized pricing through Apple.

Depends on the location.
Most places around here att stores only got 7-8 phones per location and those where gone within minutes. And then they didn't get any for weeks.
Either way I'm not that impatient. A week later won't kill me:)

Yeah
Looks like Apple is really stingy when it comes to supplying retailers with new iPhones when they are released.

How does this sound to y'all:
I am trying to keep my unlimited data plan, but even though I am eligible for an upgrade, I am planning on purchasing a full retail 6S and selling my current 5S. I will take the upgrade and two year contract in 2016 in order to return to the non-S cycle when the 7 comes out (assuming they are still offering the 2 year deal and subsidy). So can I just buy my own full retail 6s and keep my unlimited data without a two year commitment for now? Also, some were saying that the apple app is the most efficient method of securing a phone come launch day... Any truth?

All contributions welcome...

That may could work, IF they're still offering 2 year subsidized contracts at all for unlimited data grandfathered plans. But here's a question:

Why would you want to get off the S cycle of upgrades and go for the non-S cycle? The S cycle phones are always the best version of whichever new phone they switch to. If you switch to the iPhone 7 you won't be eligible for the iPhone 7S. Something to consider.

I see where you're coming from, but to be honest I have typically felt more of an urge to upgrade when more comprehensive changes are introduced. I agree that being on the S cycle might be a smart and stable move, but personally, I can easily forgo a change from 5 to 5S for instance, but am much more motivated to upgrade when an entirely new phone is offered and while on the current cycle I would reluctantly choose to wait a year until upgrade time.

I am probably a good candidate for the two year subsidy upgrades as I don't have a need to upgrade to the best and newest device every year I can wait the two years, but am more excited when the new model number is introduced, even if it requires polishing. Make any sense?

I sort of do, because some people prefer to get the first year of a new style phone.. I'm okay waiting for the more polished and better featured version I guess.. I'm on the S cycle, and yeah I wait a year, but I think it's worth it.. I guess it's just personal preference. I don't mind the wait, I like the upgrades and enhancements.

Hi all. I've been reading several articles and looking at the Apple site, the Apple Store app, and the AT&T site. I also called Apple and AT&T tonight - but I have no clear answer to this question:

How can I buy a 6S, pay full price, and keep my unlimited data plan? I am eligible for an upgrade.

I don't think I can do it through Apple, as on the Apple Store app I am forced to choose a "Next" plan and F that. I don't think I can do it through AT&T, because I presume my only option will be to purchase a subsidized phone WITH a 2-year contract and I'm not interested in the 2-year contract anymore.

Is anyone else in this situation? Can anyone provide me with some insight?

Yeah

Yes, and of course they want to stock up and supply their own stores first.
And then 2nd fate comes their carrier locations, best buys, walmart and other retailers that get very small amounts till supply rises and demand lowers.

I like the non-s release cycle upgrades actually.
I want the new complete redesign phone and upgrades.
The S cycles are very minor mostly hardware related changes.
With the 4S it was siri, 5S was touch id and 6S now is force touch and better camera.
Not really much difference to worth an update from my i6 to a 6S.

It's only relevant to people upgrading every other year. I don't see any point in getting a new phone every year, the changes aren't substantial enough to justify the added expense for me. With that said, there are two versions of each iPhone; the S and the non-S. The S version is ALWAYS the better version, it's just a year later. iPhone 4 had antenna gate and lacked Siri, iPhone 5 lacked sensor touch, iPhone 6 lacks the upgraded camera and force touch. And yeah, I'm sure the iPhone 7 will have some sort of stunning redesign, but it won't be as good as the iPhone 7S.

It's just a matter of which you prefer, the less capable first year or the more capable second year. I'm happy with the S cycle.

Did you go to Models and Pricing in the iPhone 6S page and click on the Get ready for pre-order link? It *should* show you what options you'll have when pre-orders open. It shows me that my only option is to pay full price and I won't be eligible for Next until next year. Whether that's what I see when pre-orders actually start, who knows.

I hear you, its just a personal choice :D Of Course every year the newer version will be the better version from last years release.
For me I rather have the complete redesign than the slightly better version of the same phone.

I did, and I get the option to "Pay in full", but I am doubtful the Apple site is going to really let me do that tomorrow night without throwing me another page that will ask me about selecting a new plan. Why doesn't the Apple Store app give me / all of us this same option (to pay in full)? I am skeptical.

If it won't let you pay in full, just select the next program and then walk into a store in a month and pay off the phone in full? Then you are off of contract

Yes you can

So if that's the case, then I guess my next step is to figure out if I should:

A) send my 6 to Gazelle for $370 and buy a 6S pay in full/no contract
Or
B) give my 6 to my mom (one of my 4 lines) and pay $299 subsidized and go back on a 2 year contract

I think those are the only two options that make sense for me. Thanks for your help. :)

i guess the real question is, why doesn't the apple pre-order have a "keep existing plan" option? I don't want to pay in full or use att next.

If you buy a new phone and pay full price, it will not affect your current plan. You just get a sim and if your contract is over, you pay month to month. They cannot change your plan unless you do an upgrade on the plan.

I am interested in getting a 6S Plus on Apple's subsidized plan (includes AppleCare Plus - $129), but it looks like you can only do that in the store. I cannot tell if I will be able to do the pick up in store option.

I have a business account, so going through the "getting ready" option tells me I am not eligible. I don't want to do an ATT upgrade. I just want to pay outright, hopefully using Apples subsidy plan.

Anyone know anything different?

I have had biz reps that were great in the past and would order me a phone at midnight, but my current guy doesn't seem too interested in doing that.

Going with the NEXT plan, paying full price up front or Apples subsidized plan does not change your unlimited grandfather plan. But I believe in actual fact you will be paying a lot more in the long run. Your ATT plan already has a built in charge if you will. When we all sign up for the 2 year contract and we pay $199/299/399 I'm sure the remaining balance is built in to our normal ATT billing.
