Going with the NEXT plan, paying full price up front or Apples subsidized plan does not change your unlimited grandfather plan. But I believe in actual fact you will be paying a lot more in the long run. Your ATT plan already has a built in charge if you will. When we all sign up for the 2 year contract and we pay $199/299/399 I'm sure the remaining balance is built in to our normal ATT billing.

So it was confirmed you lose unlimited data if you do 2 year contract? I'm switching to T-Mobile because I don't want to be forced into pre-ordering with AT&T from now on due to only their site having the 2 year contracts.

However, I just tested it out. I pretended I was going to upgrade my eligible line to the 6 Plus. The Express checkout doesn't ask you anything about changing your plan, they only try to sell accessories and insurance.

Why would you lose your data plan? The order form I just tried has nothing about changing your voice or data plan.

ATT can't forcefully refuse to continue your UDP. That would be illegal. You will renew a 2 year agreement and choose to stick with your current data plan. That's it.

Is unlimited data even worth it anymore? Did they stop throttling after 5gb's? I finally gave it up because 15 gb unthrottled plus the hotspot feature was way better than "unlimited" which became unusable when I hit 5gb.

So, If one with Unlimited data switches to NEXT and keeps their Unlimited data, they pay full price for the phone over a number of months and then they still get to pay the higher monthly fees. I don't see why anyone would decide to go that route. I still have 1 year left so I'm skipping this cycle and will hope they continue the 2 year plans next year. Might just decide to switch to T-mobile as well.

Actually I've hit the 5gb threshold before and still got LTE no problem.

I surpass 5gb every month. I always get a message that says I will experience reduced speeds in areas with high usage. I can tell but it's not a deal breaker.

I hear you, its just a personal choice :D Of Course every year the newer version will be the better version from last years release.
For me I rather have the complete redesign than the slightly better version of the same phone.

I think what you're not getting here is that it's not a "slightly better" iPhone.

The new iPhone 6S feature an A9 chip and M9 motion coprocessor, 3D Touch, 12-megapixel rear-facing camera, 5-megapixel front-facing camera, stronger glass and Series 7000 aluminum, faster Touch ID, Live Photos and a new Rose Gold color option.

iPhone 6S is powered by an Apple A9 chip and embedded M9 motion coprocessor that deliver up to 70% faster CPU performance and up to 90% faster graphics compared to the A8 chip inside the iPhone 6

So you get all this AND the 'complete redesign' of the non-S version. Make no mistake, this is a major upgrade.

This has been true of all the S versions. I'm not saying you're wrong, but you're prioritizing newness of form over function. So long as you understand what you're getting and not getting. :)

Just got more clarification from ATT. The option will be the NEXT program. 2 year contracts will be gotten rid of in the "future". You keep your unlimited data plan. With the NEXT program you do not put down the $199/299/399. So you're not paying anymore for than you are today. The full cost is spread out over 12,20,24 months whichever u choose.

Exactly what I'm doing.

Recently they increased the throttling limit. Some people even get as high as 15GB without getting throttled. I've gone as high as 8 and still haven't been throttled. Never got the chance to go higher than 8 so far.

My understanding is that existing AT&T customers can still get a 2-yr contract/subsidized iPhone by buying it directly from AT&T. Your post tells a different story. Can you please clarify or let us know what entity told you this? (AT&T customer service pn the phone, AT&T rep in the store, or just a friend, etc.)

Thanks!

I just picked up the phone and spoke with AT&T Customer Service. The 2-yr contract/subsidized price is still available for existing and new AT&T customers when getting your iPhone through the AT&T website or AT&T Store. And yes, you can still use your unlimited data plan with the subsidized pricing.

Just trying to clear this up since ray737's post tells a different story.

I spoke to the agent by dialing 611. She said in the future the 2 Year contract deal like what you're seeing online will be gone. Whether or not the "future" means this year or next she didn't specify.

They're probably good for the remainder of this cycle, I'm guessing this is the last year. But they're available now for those wanting a new phone this time around.

You're probably right. I will get to experience it next year when my upgrade is due.

Sorry Ray, I wasn't trying to knock you or say you didn't speak to anyone. I was just trying to clarify the facts and what is available now.

Since the FCC came out with their $100M fine and AT&T changed their policy to "reducing speeds in congested areas", I haven't been throttled when going over 5GB (before that, I was throttled to almost unusable speeds). I decided to switch off wifi all of last month to see if my service would be slowed, and I hit 20GB with no throttling, so it seems that it's going to be worthwhile to keep the unlimited data. Of course, the situation could change, but for the time being, I'm sticking with my unlimited data plan. I've gone back to more conservatively using wifi when it's available, but especially now that I'm streaming Apple Music, it's nice to have the ULD.

These AT&T fools will need to rip my grandfathered unlimited plan from my cold dead hands. If possible, once I have kids and grandkids I'll pass it to them as well. Giving the true definition of "grandfathered"

I HATE the idea of NEXT or whatever.....basically "renting" the phone for 12 months and then trading it in is so idiotic to me.

If I have 500.00 cash for a new phone every year, then why do they need to spread my payments out? I'll pay you right now!

This will be my first year ordering through AT&T so I can keep my regular plan AND keep/sell my phone and then do the same next year.

Even if I have to pay 749.99 for a unlocked iPhone 6S 64gb is fine with me. My iPhone 6 is easily worth 400-450 on eBay. I'll use those proceeds to help offset the 749.99.

See you in hell AT&T.....see you in hell

My wifi is off 99% off the time since AT&T changed their throttling policy. Battery efficiency has been great for me with it off. Currently at 27gb with 2 weeks to go in this cycle... no hard throttle.:)

I have the UDP and have never been throttled anywhere in the country, ever. use between 1G and 12GB a month.
I'm eligible for a 2-yr subsidized 6s and will probably just go that route one more time. I'm paying 62$ a month for 1000 Min, UDP and 1000 texts with my FAN discount. I couldn't get near that with a mobile share plan.

I am sure this has been discussed before, but humour me here considering I have always kept my grandfathered ULD so I never really looked into smaller price differences between other plans because I regard the uld above all other plan variances...

Where is this remaining subsidy balance that you are estimating exists within our plan costs? For instance, I have nation wide 450 and unlimited. What kind of discount would I theoretically receive for these services if I was not on a two year subsidized contract?

Unless you are on a mobile share plan, you won't receive any discount. The old plans all had subsidy built in so it makes no sense to not sign a 2 year agreement.

For me, this exact scenario.
450:unlimited text/unlimited data contract price is 75-77month with 25% discount I use like 5-15gb

A paid off iPhone on next plan or whatever with talk text and 5gb is 75 bucks, not sure how much discount would drop it though.

Showed me at store yesterday trying to convince me to switch over

So with my discount I pay same as someone with 5gb with no iPhone payments on next.

This makes me appreciate my plan tbh.
