I think a re-designed Mac mini sounds very interesting!
Feel it's to move on from my Mac Pro from 2010 which runs Big Sur pretty well (I know only up until Mojave is officially supported) albeit with some caveats.
Yeah, my 2 x quad 3.0 GHz MacPro 1,1 flashed to 2,1 is becoming more and more problematic. Yesterday something happened that killed my RAM, the same day I was troubleshooting why so many of my websites weren't loading. Well it turns out the website issue is due to an expired SSL certificate, on old OSes that are stuck on SSL 1.0.2 or earlier... like my Mac Pro with OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan. It's working now though after I
forced Keychain Access to trust the certificate.
Regarding the memory, my FB-DIMM memory with the great big heat sinks has become unstable. Maybe it was problematic for a while now (since I haven't been pushing the Mac Pro hard so I may not have noticed) or maybe I zapped it when I was checking out the machine's internals trying to troubleshoot the website issue.
I'm now running third party server RAM with small heatsinks and that really gets the fan going. I was considering buying more RAM, but new good quality FB-DIMMs are bloody expensive, and used RAM is iffy. I may be better off just waiting to see if Apple releases a new Mac mini next month.
I don’t expect that Mac mini will come cheap…not to mention the added cost of a display, speakers etc.
If you’re looking for a powerful desktop, you may be better off waiting for the larger iMac in the spring of 2022.
A Mac mini... with more ports... would be perfect to replace my Mac Pro.
Well, not quite perfect. The one major issue is that
Apple has killed subpixel anti-aliasing, which means that later OSes don't look so nice on my Apple 30" Cinema HD Display.
A new Mac mini with 6 TB4 ports would be smashing. Or even a MacBook Pro with 6 TB4 ports which would be a big upgrade over the current one where I am needing to daisy chain or just swap TB3 devices as and when I need them.
I was considering using my 12" MacBook to replace my Mac Pro, since I don't use the MacBook much (as my primary machine is a 27" iMac) and speed is not of the utmost importance here. However, I personally find using a laptop as a desktop replacement kinda annoying. It's even worse with the MacBook compared to other laptops, since it has only a single USB-C port (plus headphone jack), meaning to do anything with it requires third party dongles. I just want a true desktop with lots of ports.
I'm curious how much more a Mac mini with more ports (and faster SoC) would cost compared to the current M1 Mac mini, since truthfully the M1's speed is enough for my needs, as is 16 GB. The problem with just 4 USB ports is that I'd need one for the 30" Cinema Display leaving me with 3 left, which would be fully populated. 6 USB ports would be good and would mean I wouldn't have to resort to complicating matters with a hub. Even better though would be to get a DisplayPort 2.0 port alongside that HDMI port.
