a lot of games on ios/mac are made on resources provided by epic for free to developers that apple doesn't pay epic for. same with unity

this not only includes the game engine but also assets

stop slowing the rabid at the mouth pile on with facts, dude

yes it is. it is free to a certain threshold which most unreal engine users fall under

Thanks @topdrawer and @Grohowiak for the knowledge drop, it does indeed appear to be free up to a million in gross sales.

On to the heart of the matter....

1) So Epic wants to post their games to Apple's marketplace, free of charge, then doesn't want to allow Apple commissions on IAPs?

Meaning: they don't want to pay anyone anything.

2) Epic wants to open their own marketplace where they will then collect commissions from devs at an assumed discount from Apple's 30%?

Meaning: All your commissions are belong to us! It is somehow ok for Epic to have a store and charge commissions but not Apple.

Epic: don’t pick on unreal engine - it has nothing to do with this!
Also Epic: no macos fortnite for you, even though it has nothing to do with this!
Even though I'm with Epic on this one - you're right.
Epic's losing credibility by doing this. This won't play well in the next chapters of the battle.

The fact that Epic provides developer resources free to other developers is immaterial. The judge considers the economic harm if all the other apps were banned to the respective developers and whether those are arms-length relationships - which he rightfully considered.

A monopoly is not illegal but there are laws against using predatory, monopoly powers. Epics charges of anti-competitive actions by Apple will not be sustained though as long as Apple acts consistently with other developers. Basically, Epic wants to all the revenues from in app sales on iOS devices and only pay Apple $99/year to host their app.

So Epic couldn't take Apple to court over in-app fees without violating AppStore's TOS??? Confused......

People are going to use Google regardless if Apple switches to DuckDuckGo. Apple realized this and figured, may as well make billions and reinvest some of that into making Safari technologies better to improve privacy.

Apple is playing it smart.
That would imply Google is much dumber than I think is possible, even if you don't like Google. They wouldn't pay Apple that much for something that people would use regardless of the default.

Sounds like you've never really developed mobile apps that has a high number of users across the globe.

I work for a large company, I'm a developer for an app with over 1m monthly active users. I'm aware of limitations. We use the app store for app distribution since we're not allowed to self-host our own app, and things that Apple forces developers to use the app store/dev center for.

I hope that will finally lead Apple to stop limiting us to their stupid Apple Arcade. I want to play real games on a couple of my iOS devices.

I totally understand that Apple wants a controllable place to make $$$$ on it. I'm OK with it unless it's hurting customers. Current business model hurts customers a lot, hopefully they will understand it.

But I'm afraid they won't. In that case Apple's gaming platform will die a painful death. Games is something Apple never understood. They think games are casual **** that targets mass market. But it's a mistake - look at what happened to Facebook casual games market. Same will soon happen to Apple Arcade.

They could release on the Epic Store on macOS if they weren’t being stubborn puppets for the CCP. Apple or Microsoft don’t make anything from that desktop app.

But the quicker people give up Fortnite the better anyway. I worry that all this online role play has spilled over violently into the real world. That’s worth thinking about and investigating no matter what our opinions of games are. Some people can be affected by spending too much time in a fantasy.
Yea and it's way worse now with the endless IAPs. At least back in the day when I played Everquest, it was $9.89 a month period. Worst I started to see eventually in the beginning were max level characters on eBay for hundreds. Was awhile before the IAPs appeared there.

Well to be honest Fortnite run great on my iPhone. But is uncomfortable but epic good job. About to loose millions of players/money but that’s great. I deleted it right now stupid game was taking 10GB from my iPhone. Thanks god.

I don't think Apple will really lose many customers. Gamers will generally want to play on their gaming rigs, and not a phone. I don't think anyone will choose their phone based on the availability of an app, especially if the app is a game.
Yes even if I did play Fortnite, I would play on a computer like I used to in FPS so I could strafe and spin and shoot all at the same time. Even when I watch my daughter play on Switch, it looks much easier than using a phone or tablet.

Again. 10 year olds across the country are in tears. “Thanks Epic...I’ll have to play one of the trillion other games now.”

I'm confused about one thing... and I feel like it must be right under my nose, yet I don't get it.

I only recently started playing Fortnite on my Mac Pro. It's been a nice distraction during some difficult work days, and gives me something current to talk with my kids about. I did not download it from the AppStore. I'm using the Epic Games launcher, from which Fortnite is launched. So why isn't the MacOS version getting the update? Other than the fact that Apple manufactured my computer - what role do they play in the use of Fortnite like this, and thus why would Epic punish MacOS players except to be controlling and exert maximum pain?

Again, I apologize if I missed something important here. I 100% get and understand why they CANNOT update the app on iOS devices... but considering this MacOS version didn't come from Apple... I'm lost as to what the issue is.

Consumers are cost conscious and there should be different cost options like there are for shopping at Target, Walmart, Costco, Amazon, etc.

This is where the whole anti-competitive argument comes in. Apple views iOS-based devices as "singular", no separation between hardware and software, and the App Store is part of that. If a consumer wants choice, they can choose a different device — a different ecosystem.

Consumers have choice. Epic just wants more choice *within* the Apple ecosystem, in Apple's house.

It's like walking into Walmart and demanding to pay with Bitcoin. Walmart requires that you to pay using their terminals.

I wasn't suggesting that people should invest in other phone companies, was I?
No, it seemed you were suggesting that iPhone sales were declining compared to Android and this Fortnite situation would add to it. I was just pointing out that that doesn't seem to be the situation at all.

I am not comfortable with your use of the word choice. Epic doesn't want customers to have a choice. They want control.

I think you answered it.

Yeah, as I've read back some more... I guess they really are doing it just to be a bunch of d***cks. I'm guessing they hope that by doing that, MacOS users will also pile on pressure to Apple. Except I'm not a pawn, and I see the aggressor for what they are. That's disappointing. I'll let the courts do their job on the broader issues here... but these kind of tactics are shameful and I'm losing respect for Epic quickly because of them.
