To stop the moaning, they should offer the iphone at cost with an ipad data plan as an option.

I bought my iPhone 4 at "cost", £499 for the 16GB SIM free.

That left me to choose my contract or PAYG options carefully and not be tied to anything. As it turns out I went with the 12 month O2 Simplicity plan with 600mins, Unlimited texts, 500mb 3G data (unlimited until end of October 2010), and Unlimited WiFi (cloud) access. £20 a month.

When I bought my iPhone 3G on PAYG from Apple it was £342 for the 8GB and was tied to O2 out the box.

No luck here. Apple site says:

Can I buy an iPhone without an AT&T contract?

No. iPhone requires a two-year AT&T wireless service contract.

I was hoping to get one and put in an ipad sim (and change the apn to broadband).

It really is odd that a product made by an American company is offered to foreign markets in better more attractive packages than it's "home" nation.

Apple offer iPhone 4 for £499 (16GB) and £599 (32GB) SIM free (or Unlocked as you guys in the US refer to it).

We also have our pick of all the carriers here: O2, Orange, Vodafone, T-Mobile, 3, Tesco (who use O2's infrastructure).

How long until we start to the new Touch available in the "factory refurbished" section of the Apple store?

that will take a while (if it is a new design, in this case facetime iPod touch), even apple has refurbhised items they will wait then release it later (so that the value of the product does not go down immediately) - i guess you would not see until on or after holidays

It's primarly because the US is different but hey at least most of the providers here still have unlimited data. I know alot of the carriers in the UK have that pesky "Fair Usage Poilcy".

I'm very angry about this. Apple have promoted FaceTime as a means of communication for deaf people using sign language. Without vibrate alert how are deaf users supposed to know they are receiving a FaceTime call request? Not all deaf people can afford an iPhone, espcially children. Get your act together Apple!

Well damn. I had specifically looked into this as both of my wife's parents are deaf and they were asking me about getting iPhone 4's for themselves. Where they live AT&T is pretty crappy, so I looked into it and saw that statement about it having a vibration sensor. Seeing how FaceTime only works over Wifi anyway, and with the vibration now added, I recommended that they order an iPod Touch instead. This can't be good. Currently they have flashers for their landline, but if they have these in their pocket, or even on the table, they're screwed. Flashers and a small screen turning on across the room are a big difference. I hope they didn't order yet. I'll have to text her now...crap.

Please explain your logic or else we will all assume its just ignorance. The iPod is not only for music. Also, those who have trouble hearing but are not completely deaf may not want to disturb everyone around them with a blaring alarm. Vibration would be very useful for gaming, alerts and facetime calls.

The main point of the iPod is music. Anyway, I'd put money on betting that the vast majority of deaf people do not own an iPod (of course some will but no where near most). There are better things for the other features of an iPod such as an iPad. But your ignorance refuses to let you see common sense. Wait, maybe it's your arrogance.

The main point of the iPod Touch is the App Store, and now, possibly FaceTime. Go to Apple's iPod Touch page. On that first main page, they don't even mention that the thing is capable of playing music.

An iPad doesn't fit in your pocket. Deaf people have pockets too.

On the Fence

I am unsure whether I should get iPod touch 4G or keep the one that I recently got during the Back to School promotion. I played with the new iPod touch today and obviously there is no vibration. I didn't see it in settings or anywhere else. The camera was not anything spectacular. I didn't see any difference between the iPod touch camera and old phone camera besides pixel density. I'm guessing a non-tech savvy person won't really any difference in the screen estate or anything else except the addition of the camera. Persuade me to change my view about the new device.
