I really don't understand why everyone is getting on Apple about this stuff...

First off, Apple is a customer of Foxconn. People blaming this stuff on Apple should also be blaming themselves and everyone they know who bought an Apple product because they are customers of Apple, so the blood of those committing suicide is also on their hands... right?? right??

Secondly, it really isn't THAT BAD of a deal! Getting paid $2/hour for 60 hours weeks = $520/month... That means that their $17.50 rent and $64 in meals each month ($0.70 each times 3 meals a day) is only $81.50 each month, or 16% of their income!!! Up until several month ago my rent and food was like 50% of my income! haha

Finally, they are employed! No explanation needed here!

I'd rather see people at that age full-time in a classroom so that their future has a chance to be better. They have the rest of their lives to be a cog in the machine if they so choose.
Oh I do not think we should return to the days of working in the coal mines. My job did not impact my schooling. The same can be said of my department IT job in college. I just stayed on campus from sun up till sundown. I would either be at work or in class.

Traveling just south of the CONUS border you get kids skipping out on school and going to work. We are pretty lucky here in the United States. I guess this might be a culture shock for some.

I am supporting a friend of mine become an electrician since he is the only citizen in his immediate family. The previous generation often places a lot of hope into their children.

Yeah sadly US labor laws limit the amount of work a child under 18 can work the time they are a changin'
I wonder of the number if employees would matter in that case.

I dont mind one bit, because they are passing the savings onto me, the consumer

They were probably off site pulling double shifts making sneakers or something else we need in the West.

Only Apple has the type of fans that would defend child labor for them.

Imagine if this was a story about Google for just a second.

Why would Foxconn hire underage workers if there's such a high demand for jobs there?

A factory in communist China hiring underage workers? OH HEAVENS NO.

...Seriously. It's freakin' China. What do you expect?

Chan's organization also focuses on issues of student labor, alleging that local Chinese governments have in some cases forced schools to sent (send) their students to Foxconn for internships even when the work is completely outside of their field of study.

The issues are of course not unique to the two companies, although Apple's public statements and attempts (attempted or attempts at) transparency have also contributed to the focused attention.

The grammar in this article is driving me crazy... Obviously this was not proof read.

My eyes are bleeding trying to read the last few paragraphs. Spell/grammar check before publishing please or I will laugh at your 'attempts transparency' and 'sent' my readership elsewhere.

macrumors stories are now outsourced to chinese editors

Does macrumors need an editor? Really appalled by some of the grammatical mistakes lately... Those are for gizmodo and idb not macrumors!

And the story continues.... seriously people should stop attacking apple and focus on gm food or something else.

So, at this point we officially have an international organization fighting tooth and nail against the wishes of the private employer and a willing employee for work that both parties agreed to do at a price that they agreed to do it.

At what point do the bleeding heart liberals pull back and allow for people in underdeveloped countries to pull themselves out of poverty by working hard?

some of you saying that you worked at 15/16/whatever

go back and think how many hours you actually worked.

Assuming the place you worked for was up to date local labor laws there are maximum number of hours per week you are allowed to work during the school year and another number during the summer. There also limit the times during the day you can work.

They can also vary between agricultural work and non agricultural work

the numbers generally increase as you get older.

The issue here is likely using children full time not necessarily employing them.

Although does China even have child labor laws?

Holla!

Chinese women rule. They're usually straight-forward, great cooks and a lot of them prefer to use logic in a relationship instead of hysterical emotions.

they should find the section of kids responsible for thermal paste squirting and give em a lesson in how it should be done.

:D

How about sorting out our own backyard first... All the Botox'ed 8 years olds and bulimic teenage models. It's all forms of work!
