fair labor

If Foxconn and Apple agreed to pay these people even one more dollar per hour than the $1.75 they average now-ten thousand workers- it would add up to just under $3 million a year. NO Big deal to Apple which has BILLIONS in cash-but a huge deal to these slaves. What is the problem with corporate people being unable to provide a fair wage? I will pay 20-30 dollars more for big ticket Apple products if I know the workers will get it and not the greedy corporate execs. and Wall St. They live in a communist country and should take the plant into employee owned and profits distributed to them all-and insist on more from Apple!

Only Apple has the type of fans that would defend child labor for them.

Imagine if this was a story about Google for just a second.

No one cares about google, the only reason people care about Apple is because of all their success in recent years. And in terms of defending child labour, who is defending it here? Google doesn't need defending cause of their universal OPEN, DO NO EVIL AND FREE BS excuse

Look, we all know anything made in China is made under conditions that most Americans would find deplorable. We know that every factory there is probably employing some kind of slave labor to produce the products at the prices Americans want to pay, and we also know that they are likely using children to do it. The fact of the matter, however, is that Apple is not the only company making its devices in China, they are all made there! Unless we as a nation want to make it illegal to manufacture in China until Chinese law makes such workplace atrocities illegal and actively prevents them from happening, then all this story and others like it do is tarnish the Apple brand or make it harder for Apple to compete with the companies that don't even try to make the conditions better. Any Chinese worker will tell you working in an Apple product factory is a much better life than their friends at Motorola and Samsung factories have.

You have no ideas how businesses work and the realities of the market place, do you?

Thank you.

Ok, the shows over. Put your slippers back on and have a Green Tea. :apple:

I was surprised to learn that every iPhone and iPad is hand assembled. That is insane considering how many are sold.

No, the insanity may be on your part. Human hand labor provides the best quality for the buck. Machines and robots are expensive to build and maintain. A robot will produce tons of scrap before anyone even notices, and then high paid technicians and engineers are called in to fix the problem - far more expensive than hand labor.

I really don't understand why everyone is getting on Apple about this stuff...

Secondly, it really isn't THAT BAD of a deal! Getting paid $2/hour for 60 hours weeks = $520/month... That means that their $17.50 rent and $64 in meals each month ($0.70 each times 3 meals a day) is only $81.50 each month, or 16% of their income!!! Up until several month ago my rent and food was like 50% of my income!

i dont understand why people are raising hell about this. you can not compare the standard of living in america and in china. the salary of these workers are more than double the minimum wage of other asian countries. china in fact is becoming uncompetitive already.
you are right Joe. taking in consideration the standard of living in china, these chinese workers are better paid than their american counterparts.
i remember my brothers and i helping out my mom in her store since we were in grade school. we all graduated with honors-grade school/high school/college/postgrad. it is really very character building. you get to understand the value of money at a young age.
keep on complaining, and you wonder why the unemployment rate in america is getting higher. every one wants higher pay with lesser work.

First off, your numbers are WAYYYY off.. Foxconn has over 1million employees. That means a $1 increase is $1million per hour at, lets say, 50 hours per week. That is $50million per week!!! Multiply that by 50 weeks a year that they work (time off not paid lets say), which is $2.5billion a year! That doesn't include additional taxes that have to be paid with that. :p

$2/hour there IS a fair wage in China, btw.

I worked a couple of the "Apple Demo Days" events at Best Buy when I was 16, giving demos of the then-new iMac computer in 1998. I was very proud to be a part of Apple and promoting products that were a passion of mine. Yes, I was only 16, but Apple paid me $100 a day for about a 5 hour shift. I think that's the big difference. $1.78 a day and 12+ hour shifts are inhumane for any form of work.

Nothing to see here - move on people

I doubt China has more restrictive labor laws than the US gov't does.

Here's what the Department of Labor has to say on the matter:

"16 (years of age) - Basic minimum age for employment. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds may be employed for unlimited hours in any occupation other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor."

From this site: http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs43.htm

So, unless Apple (or China) has tighter rules than we do - this is a non-issue.

Let's read up on our laws before you publish!

They are not slaves!

Paying $ 1 more doesn't solve the problem all of China or for that matter other developing countries have. (Too many people)

Why is it Apple's job to fix what is wrong in a country.

China copies everything else, why not pay scales and other structures.

And lastly: Why would anybody anyplace pay more than they have to?

16 year olds aren't children.

labor

Wikipedia says between 250,000 and 300,000 workers at Foxconn in China-not one million so YOU have your numbers way off- and to say compared to US workers they are doing fine is ridiculous-they live like ants in cramped rooms-work like slaves at menial jobs and do not have all the benefits we have. To say I do not know how capitalism works is wrong-it's that Capitalism works wrong in my opinion. The workers should own that factory and split to money!

Wow. Cry me a river.
When I was 16-17 I often worked in Apple orchards 14 hrs. a day.

Here in Amerika.

Do you still do that? Everyday of your work week? Probably not.

It's one thing to do it when you're young or for short bursts (during crunch time)... I sure wouldn't do that 5 days a week all the time.

reality

You have no ideas how businesses work and the realities of the market place, do you?

Yea the reality is it sucks and people who need to rape others to make too much on the backs of others do too.

Yeah, not even a communist country. What a tragedy! :D

----------

Ummm... I got my first 40 hour per week job at the age of 14. Right here. In America.

Yup, 15 I was It was encouraged by my high school. I earned work experience credit for it. Most sub 30 people in the US have a poor work ethic. Me me me, what can I get. You can get your butt a job son.

its not only a fair wage, in fact, its fairly high in china. in other parts of china, many factories are lacking in workers since most workers now flock to factories like foxconn because of their high wages, free board and lodging. the minimum wage in china is more or less 1000 rmb/usd155/month. when you spend 50usd in america, you spend 50rmb for the same thing in china. ultimately, chinese workers are better paid :D
