just the beginning

Apple has gone and joined a liberal organization that is interested in dictating how companies should conduct their business in the name of 'worker rights'.

Worker safety and compensation are noble goals, but there are areas of interference from an unknowing outside organization that end up being unwanted and potentially detrimental, as evidenced by the overtime discussion.

We will have to see how this actually plays out, but I'm betting this doesn't end well.

Good job western society. We think we know what's best for these people and now you are taking hours away from them, which is money out of their pocket. If they want to work, let em work.

Or apple could spare 1% extra of the gigantic profit margin to pay the workers enough that they don't need to work all that overtime and can actually enjoy life a bit.

Are you an Apple stockholder? If not, your comment looks biased pro-Apple and for free.

I'm just so sick of everyone spinning / exploiting everything to suit their own personal agenda. It's intellectually dishonest and making me very cynical and depressed about the world I live in.

Whether it's the FLA taking credit here, folks jumping on the Trayvon / Zimmerman thing, that Mike Daisey guy, or whatever - no one really cares about the underlying issue or people. They only care about "what can I get out of this?"

I don't know....maybe I'm the last boy scout. I need to get off the internet and turn off the TV and radio. I think it will all still be there but at least I won't hear it.

Excuse me, but do any of you run Apple? No. Apple is housed in a Capitilist economy, let them do what they wish. Even if it means forcing human rights onto people who resent them. 60 hours a week, that's 12 hours of work each weekday. They also have to eat, drink, go to the bathroom & etc. 60 hours is not healthy. It's not because of the "Western World" that I say this, it's because of my human morals. And science. People need to be healthy.

My human morals disagree. You don't think this happens right now in the US?

I work in the oilfield, pipeline construction to be more precise. Currently we are working 14 to 15 hours a day 7 days a week. I'm more than tickled pink to do it. Not everyone wants to work a 9 to 5. And it sure is nice when that two week paycheck rolls in with a comma and a couple of digits in the front of that comma.

They can all blame the almighty righteous Americans.. Chinese standards doesn't live up to their standards.

Couldn't agreed more. We American thinks we know what's best for everyone on this planet. Our values, our standards... so full of ourselves. Look at how well we are doing do.

Let us force our value on you. Smile.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. This is clearly imposing someone else's values on a different society. In the U.S., a fair number of people depend on overtime to augment their salaries, since it's often paid at a higher rate. In fact, employers sometimes have to restrict overtime to keep costs down.

And talk to anyone who's been through medical residency about how 15 hours of overtime a week is a lot. My worst week during my training was 129 hours, and I routinely had over 100 hours. Even now, 50 hours seems about the norm.

I've worked 60 hours or more a week many times, even 60 hours in 4 days (10 Mon, 10 Tues, 17 Wed, 24 Thurs). There are many people here in the US that do the same. Where is your righteous indignation for these people?

I'm sure this comma is never reached by Foxconn workers no matter how much they work.

Wow, so they make $634 a month when working 60 hours of OT a month. If their normal work hours are 40 hours a week. That equals 220 hours a month of actual time worked. So they make less than $3 an hour? :(
Yet another naive opinion from somebody who thinks living expenses are a global constant from country to country. (sigh)

Whats to say they wouldn't work the same hours anyway but? Offering them more money may not lead to the workers wanting to work less. If they are accustomed to those hours not only because they do them but because its the norm in their region, then they might want to keep working and just earn more.

Not that the employees earning more is a bad thing, but if the issue being addressed is work load then that may not in itself resolve it. Restricting the hours as they are doing could lead to them looking for ways to cheat the system or the taking up of a second job (if they can get one), irrespective of what the pay level is.

I work 35h a week as a programmer. Overtime? No, thanks.

According to your profile you are from Brazil. You have the highest government mandated paid vacation days of any nation at 41 days and you have to take at least 20 consecutive days to qualify with the law. You also (by law) have a maximum number of working hours per week at 44 not to exceed 8 hours per day. That work week is laughable to most people in the US. Your attitude is expected knowing what country you live in.

You are 100% correct. Congratulations Foxconn, you're now completely American in every way, shape, and form. Every time you misstep, NPR is going to do a 15 minute, incorrect, politically spun segment on you.

It's no wonder countries like China hate us. They want our business, and we want to make it as difficult as possible for them to work with us.

Citations needed proving they voluntarily work and don't suffer any pressure for working overtime.

All forms of work comes with stress, more so with long and overtime hours. These people, just as I have, have been afforded an opportunity to make money beyond anything they could ever do elsewhere.

Yeah my job is hard, long, rough, tiring, and currently 1500 miles away from my wife, two kids, and the one that is comming soon. But, I'm fixing to build them a new home, without a mortgage. That is what makes it worth it to some people, and they take advantage of that when they can.
