Thanks MTR/soulstorm, got it working now. It seems that OSX prior to 10.4 does NOT include the openAL framework.

I'm still having a few problems though-
The voices are messed up during mission briefings/debriefings and cutscenes. It plays the voice files and chatter from the mission not the briefing. Also it's hit or miss whether it will even play the cutscenes. Any way to fix this? should I install any of the VPs again?
Also, seeing as my mac is a tad slow (G4 imac with 512mb ram) I can't have all the graphical options maxed and still get decent framerate, I would like to turn the 3d hardware textures down, but as the background starfield is part of hardware accelarated in the SCP version it goes horribly blurry way before having any noticeable effect on ships etc... Is there a commandline config to turn off the 'enhanced' starry background and revert to the retail one that doesn't resize?

ALSO ALSO the hardlight wiki appears to be down. Anyone else having probs?

I am now horribly addicted to this game :) I didn't go to work today...

I'd still be interested in knowing what .vp files to download.

I downloaded and installed:
zpack (mv_core, mv_textures, mv_models, mv_music)
mv_effects
mv_befix (older beam animations...my mac couldn't handle the animated ones!)

I also went to http://www.penguinbomb.com/lightspeed/ZMW02download.html
And downloaded the new nebula effects (WOW stunning!) These go in your Freespace2/data/maps folder.
I also got the thruster effects.

Cool thanks iffy80. I had downloaded the zpack yesterday but didn't know how to activate them as noted on page 4. I'll give those maps a try too.
My G4 should be able to take most anything I install since I got a new ATI 9800 128MB graphics card a few months ago.

I posted a link to this thread on my blog. :D

Hey, so was anyone able to reproduce the multiplayer issue while playing OS X to OS X, the one where the ships don't move on the client computer?

Multiplayer problems

Im having the same problems as colocolo, on a osx to osx game the client will always face motionless ships, while the host has no trouble at all.

Does someone here have a link to the whole source code, ready to be compiled in Xcode? I would love to take a look at this code.

Oh, and BTW, I already posted the multiplayer bug through mantis. I can't wait to get some feedback on that!

I may have a link... It's a link to the official tarball of the newest FS2_Open release.

go to http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/releases where the newest version of FS2_Open is located, and the tarball. I haven't downloaded the tarball, so I don't know for sure if that is what you are looking for, but it's worth a try.

which app to get

seems like icculus.org is down
anybody got the newest fsopen binary? I'm using tigital's beta6 right now, but fsopen is supposed to be better, right?

btw: does anybody know how well networking with mixed osx / windows lan works?

tigital's beta is supposed to perform exactly as the original FS2 was intended to perform, with the same graphics and sound.

FS2_Open is meant to add new graphics to the game, new AI and sound . As such, it's a lot better in all terms. I have the latest release.

Icculus.org is down because according to Ryan, they perform an ISP tranfer. Ryan wrote that the downtime should be no more than 24 hours, but that limit has been far exceeded, so all we have to do is wait! :)

 ok please help, ive dowloaded the torrent and the 3 other images. i copied the contents of the torrent disk image to an empty folder in my app folder. when i open the FS2_open nothing happens. is there anything else i should have done? pls help

Saitek X52 Flight Control System

So I was attempting to play this with a mouse and I would rather be listening to crazy frog than play it. Now if someone suggests playing both at the same time I don't know what I will do.

Here is the link http://www.saitekusa.com/usa/prod/x52.htm

The problem is like with vast majority of accessories they don't say if its mac compatible has anyone used this? or know of a good 2 handed system?

Help with the SCP .VP files

Hi I'm new to this board, and I'm thrilled to death about how great it is to have Freespace on my new PowerBook (15"). My question is how I activate the command line entries in order to use the new special effects. I am only barely familiar with Terminal in particular and UNIX in general. Any help with this would be most appreciated.

firstly, download the latest FS2_Open release. You would find the link in my first post in this thread. It contains a list of available command line options, and a short description of what they do. These descriptions are new additions to the FS2_Open readme file, and if you downloaded the file which contains the old readme, do it again to get the new one.

As for those command line options... Just because they are named "command line options" doesn't mean that they should involve use of the terminal...

What you must do is to change the file in the location ~/Library/FS2_Open/data/cmdline_fso.cfg. If there isn't any such file in there, create one with this name (must have the plain text format!!). And in there you will enter the command line options leaving 1 space between each one. here is an example of my file contents:
Code:
-rlm -pcx32 -3dwarp -orbradar -no_fps_capping -glow -spec -rlm -ambient_factor 80 -jpgtga -targetinfo -allslev -d3dmipmap -env -alpha_env -decals -2d_poof -ballistic_gauge -dualscanlines
Save the file and run the game. This will enable the .vp files functions, according to what parameters you have set in this file. More information exists at the SCP wikki (which is down atm) and in the FS2_Open for OS X readme file.

Also note that in the ~/Library/FS2_Open/ location there is fs2_open.ini which will allow you to set custom resolutions for the game, which you can't do anywhere else.

Hope I helped.
