Re: Command Line entries

Thanks, Soulstorm. I appreciate the assistance, and I look forward to playing this game I never got around to getting when it was actually out.

Download Stats

I thought it might be interesting to make some stats known. The game has become very popular.

I made the Torrent available for download 27 days ago today.

It's since been downloaded 1,374 times. (!!!)

That works out to over 50 downloads per day.

(This only counts full downloads; not those who start & never finish.)

At 1.43GB a piece, that's over 72GB per day.

:)

So, will all these downloads, are you saying no one here has actually tried multiplayer OS X to OS X?

Can anyone confirm that the bug of ships not moving on the client I reported earlier actually exists and its not just me?

One of the first things i try with any game is its multiplayer capacities, I am astounded no one else cares...

I only have Windows friends around me. One of them couldn't install it but he needs to reformat and reinstall Windows anyways. No multiplayer games yet.

I was glad to upload 3.5 GB to the torrent. :D

Some little facts of my own... This thread has been viewed 12588 times as of this writing. And it currently has 208 replies. That makes it the most popular thread in the gaming section. See for yourself if you don't believe me.

Wow, that sure shows that freespace 2 is becoming popular... again. :)

Anyone know whats wrong?

I've been extremely sick the past couple of weeks so I appologize for not being very responsive to anyone. I know I'm behind on getting back to some people through e-mail so just know that your aren't forgotten and I'll get responses out as soon as I can. Also stopped getting notification of new posts about a week ago (probably about the time icculus.org went down) so I didn't realize new stuff was here. ;)

Sooo, a few updates:

Installer should be out this week. No real ETA since it's the holidays, I'm still sick (and overly medicated), and I'm flooded with work. It will get uploaded as soon as I get the chance to do so.

CVS builds will start getting posted at least once a week starting tomorrow. These will basically be nightly builds, prone to bugs, and not well tested. They will be required for the new MediaVPs though which is why I'm rushing the things out. Plus I'm going to need the extra testers soon so it's time to get people ready. These CVS builds will be for 10.4+ only! I don't have the time to build nor the space to store the more compatible builds. Universal Binaries will start up in a couple of weeks. Builds will be available in source form if you wish to build yourselves, and OS X (PPC) 10.4+ comaptible binaries. The builds and CVS snapshots will be made available on at least one day every week or more often if major bugs are fixed or new features introduced.

The multiplayer problem should be fixed now. At least I'm hoping it is since I don't have the time to properly test it. The fix will be in the CVS build released tomorrow so anyone intrerested in multiplayer please test it for the previous, and any new, problems.

IO control code updates will hit late next month in the CVS builds so look out for that. This will include new pilot file code to work better with mods and the new ini file format for storing options and getting rid of most of the cmdline options. A new cross-platform GUI launcher will be made available as well which you can use to easily set the various options, video settings, and switch mods. And as long as there aren't any serious code issues, there will be full support for the X52 joystick as well (it's on my Christmas wish list and is supposed to be OS X compatible :D).

@Patmian212: Make sure to install SDL. You can get the needed dmg from libsdl.org (can't remember the direct link). I thought that I updated the previous build to include SDL since I had orginally forgotten to do it but you got the original version, or I forgot to upload the stupid update.

Hey, thanks a lot!
I will be sure to test it the moment the build is released, and I'll let you know if it works and if there are any issues.

Thanks everyone for being so helpfull, I will install SDL and nget back to yah
Well it worked fine and now I can finally play, thanks MTR and soulstorm for your patience. Hopefully this game will be as good or better then freelancer.

Please Help!!?

Hello people, I wonder if you could help me out?

I've downloaded and installed Freespace 2 as per the instructions given by mtr. The game plays fine (aside from a few sound glitches) throughout the first three training missions, but then crashes. Everytime, whether I skip training or play through it, it will crash straight after, just as it begins loading the breifing screen for the next mission.

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!

I really want to play this game, please please help.

I am running 10.4.3 on a Titanium G4 Powerbook, 1GHz.

I had heard that there was a movie glitch in the original Freespace 2 (by volition) that made it into OS X and Linux ports of FS2_Open. I'm not really sure but...

Go to preferences and disable the talking heads icon, just to pass the mission that you encounter problems to.

Maybe that will fix your problem.

Thanks Soulstorm, I'll try that this evening... fingers crossed!

I'll get back to you on the results tomorrow, god I hope it works!!

Stay Groovy.

If that doesn't work, please post a crash log so that we know for sure what we are talking about... :)

Download Mirror

Hi all,

I've posted a download mirror of JXSelf's 1.46 Gb .dmg OS X distro of Freespace ( with his permission ) at Macologist. (This is the one that he posted originally as a bittorrent at http://freespace2.bluehome.net/ .)

The URL is here:
http://www.macologist.org/dload.php?action=file&file_id=414

Free registration is required for download, but it's pretty easy. Also we have only a limited number of download slots, so for the near future, it might be full (you'll receive an FTP error). Hopefully our scripts to mirror the file at Filefront will kick in, and you'll see an option to click on this mirror instead, and the DL speed will be much faster.

MTR: I'd be happy to host any distros you come up with as well.

Note: we may have some server disruptions after the new year, so please be patient.

Regards,
SD

Just a quick update on the CVS builds since they are a little late: ...

Moved back to using GCC 4 and had some issues so that has delayed things a little bit more than I wanted. The project and FS2_Open code is updated properly, just need proper versions of the OGG libs now and everything will get uploaded.

Also the past multiplayer issues should be resolved now. Beams were broken but appear to work properly now. Still needs a bit of testing so if anyone finds a beam bug then please file it in Mantis. Orient and position data is now properly handled as far as endianess goes so ships and other objects should once again update properly. I found a couple of other minor issues as well during testing and going over the code so hopefully everything will be more workable now. There are still byte-swap issues that are known but those will get solved in the next week or two.

CVS builds are an entirely different beast than release builds so for those who decide to use the CVS builds know that there are quite a few changes compared to the 3.6.7 release version. I'll make a quick FAQ about the changes when the CVS build goes live. Just know that if you should be prepared to get your hands a little dirty if you get into the CVS versions. :)

Hey, I'm having some trouble with the game. It installed fine and all is well in the program-running sense of the word, but my mouse movement just won't cut it. I have a Mighty Mouse - I know, I know, but I don't have enough money to afford another one right now, christmas, what can I say - and its sensitivity is simply TOO LOW. I've played FS for the PC and the mouse movement was fine, so this is definitely something to do with my Mighty Mouse/Mac/FS. I know most people might scold me for trying to game with a MM, but I really don't care, its useful for what I do and goes with the Mac. Anyway, is there anyway of tweaking the sensitivity settings beyond the maximum allowed limit? I live in Brazil, so mac-compatible mouses with good functionality are hard (and expensive) to find, and joysticks and joypads are downright impossible to find for the mac. Is there some file I can tweak? I have the sensitivity settings on maximum both in-game and in the mouse settings, so I have no other way of tweaking the mouse. Using the keyboard isn't all that good and nice in my experience, so what can I do? Is there some program that will allow me to über-tweak my mouse? Or some way of setting the maximum sensitivity threshold to another level in-game, so that I don't have to physically lift the mouse and re-place it to get some good moving action going?

Thanks,
Guy with Mighty Mouse in Brazil.

I had some luck with the mouse in the original Freespace. Freespace 2 isn't forgiving at all. I had to go out an buy a joystick. Which was a good thing in the end.

The thing that still has me confused about this whole business is whether I can use any of the custom MVs at the SCP with the Mac port of FS2_Open.
Yes, you can use all of them without any change in quality than the PC version. Read the first post and the thread, to find information about activating the Media VP's features using the command line file.

so if i don't have a multi-button mouse, i can't play this game?

is there any installer for this game? sorry guys, it's christmas and i don't have time (no matter how easy it is) to install files etc. (i'm serious. i got little time BUT i would love to try this game out).

If I can fall asleep right now I'll have about 2 and a half hours of sleep before I have to hit the road again... but I wanted to get the CVS builds out to everyone. :)

This is going to be very short on details since I'm not able to update the webpage for everything and only had time to do the binaries and not the source, but grab it from here: http://icculus.org/~taylor/fso/nightly

I'll update late tomorrow or Monday with a webpage which will be maintained and give a rundown on the changes, known bugs, new features, and things fixed for each build that comes out. For now just know that quite a few cmdline options have been changed. They are renamed, removed, or added so check the wiki for the updated list if you have problems. The main one will probably be -rlm since it has been removed and is enabled by default. A new one is -img2dds which will compress images to save memory (big help you are short on system and/or video RAM). Let me know if you have problems, or just wait for the webpage to list them for you. ;)

@Pastorius & redAPPLE:
It can use a mouse but was designed to be used with a joystick. You can get away with just a keyboard if you need to. Mouse control is crappy at best so use a joystick/keyboard or wait a couple of months for the new input code which will greatly improve mouse support.

The only public installer right now are those things attached to the ends of your arms (hands, in case anyone couldn't guess :D). An installer will be released when ever I get off my butt and upload the thing. I'm not even going to bother giving a time frame on that since I've pushed it back numerous times already. When it hits the net I'm sure we'll both be relieved.
