How much better does the iPhone 4G look without seams? Actually looks complete (and amazing), right?

Nope. I don't think it looks any better. The seams are there for a reason. Now will they be there in a final unit???? I think they will be but what do I know. IF they are, they have a reason to be there. I bet the guys that designed it know a heck of a lot more about it than you so maybe you should just trust them.

Geez, what kind of sausage do you have stuck up your ass? Particularly for a newbie.

If you look at teardowns, you can see that the seams don't have a user-function. It is for this reason that I can almost guarantee that they won't be there in the final version.

If they are there, you can be assured it's because of a failing somewhere along the production line, either in design or in engineering, because that is not Apple's style and goes against the grain of their own design philosophy.

This philosophy is the balance of form and function. The seams may be user-functional or system-functional, but either way, the seams aren't integrated well. This is a quantifiable fact and there are no current (Aluminium & Glass) Apple products that exhibit this kind of seam, whilst at the same time, the iPhone 4G borrows many design elements of other Apple products.

The fact you don't think the seamless version looks better clearly shows you have a severe lack of taste and poor sense of clean, defined aesthetics.

It's for this reason that Apple probably don't regard someone such as yourself as a highly-desirable customer, and would no doubt equate your kind as more in line with the common riff-raff.

Edit: Or maybe you're their ideal customer. Totally loyal servitude with an unwavering lack of opinion. Drone.

Wow mate, chill. I actually thought the user you replied to's post was pretty well done and not aggressive at all. Why did you jump at him all of the sudden?

Apple has been known for terrific design. Ive has won tons of awards. And one of the most fundamental laws of design is to have a purpose for everything. If something does not have a purpose, do not put it.

The seams will be in the final product if they do have a purpose. We can only speculate what that purpose might be (there are some pretty ridiculous theories around there). But I highly doubt Ive, such award-winning designer, would put the seams in there "just because". And just because we haven't figured out the hypothetical purpose, that does not mean the purpose is not there.

Bottom-line is, trust Apple. If we were talking about specs, I can see why they'd be greedy and keep some goodies for them (like the 256 MB of RAM). But the seams are a different matter. I don't think it'd be of any difference to THEM to have them or not. It might, however, be of a difference to the user. I'm sure that, if the seams come out in the final product, there'll be a reason.

Well said, and I think you are right. I'm a design engineer. They do serve a purpose and we'll learn that soon enough.

Hey, iChan- if you don't like the way it looks, than don't buy the phone. Nor do you need to bring such an attitude to this forum. Go find a hole in the wall, putz.

I wonder why the new iPad has a curved back, like the current iPhone, but the new iPhone has a sharped edge backing? Personally, I wish my iPad had a more square back. It would make it easier to hold.

It's there to facilitate grabbing with one hand. If it was flush with the table, getting a grip would be harder. The iPhone is small enough to reach around.

Note how the MacBooks also have a slight curve. Things like this and the thick bevel are easy to critisize on a purely visual level, but this about function. Imagine the loss of available display pixels, if you'd need to recreate
the bevel margin in software, as in printed books? Expensive choice.

And I'm a practicing architect/product designer. Your point? I'm not saying there's no chance that the seams serve a purpose. It's a definite possibility. However, if any of the majority of speculation of their function came into being, their visibility can be seen as nothing less than a tradeoff.

I also never did say I didn't "trust" Apple. Hell, I've been using them since 1990 and owned their stock since '97. I would just rather newbs (or anyone for that matter) stop telling me to "trust" Apple when clearly I love Apple and have much more invested in them emotionally, professionally and economically than probably the majority of this board.

Neither did I mention I didn't like the design. It's actually very nice. But, is it not distinctly possible that one of Apple's products could be improved upon? Are all Apple's products really that perfect and have zero scope for improvement?

Seams vs. no seams is a valid discussion and even Arn tweeted my post. http://twitter.com/arnoldkim/status/13960785482

All you people calling for me to "trust" Apple are basically asking for an end to the discussion. So I ask, what the hell are you doing here in the first place?

WAH! WAH!- If you hate the iPad, then you shouldn't have bought it!

However, you said:

Fine. Then why the big deal about the seams, if apparently you trust Apple? To "discuss", like you said in the end? I'll be replyin to that too, fret not.

Without questioning the possibility of improvement (that's pretty obvious), I do counter what I bolded with something you once again wrote.

The fact you don't think the seamless version looks better clearly shows you have a severe lack of taste and poor sense of clean, defined aesthetics.

Sure, you could counter by telling me that right now, you were referring to the design in general. But that was never the question here, was it?

Grats.

We are discussing. You, on the other hand, were insulting people who never attacked you in the first place:
