Why is everyone so worked up over the seams? ... at least it adds a little design character. While everyone will sport the phone nude for the first couple of months, after the hype is over, the seams will inevitably be covered with an overpriced case for nothing more than the utilitarian purpose of keeping the phone in one piece after it hits the pavement.

I doubt that the seam would really improve shock resistance. The most plausible explanation that I've read is that the seam is a vent and allows some of the heat to dissipate.

The iPad has some heavily discussed issues concerning heat-related shutdowns.

Based on the Gizmodo breakdown, the seams are a solid integration in the outer bezel, which eliminates the possibility for dust/water penetration.

I think there's more leaks this time round because the amount of time between announcement and actual release is going to be much smaller...

When the other iPhones were announced they hadn't even started manufacturing in bulk had they?

I also understood the other reason there typically has been a long time between announcement and release was because the FCC approval process was public, and they wanted to keep the iPhone under wraps...

To those who say the phone will be released on the day of WWDC then surely we would see something from the FCC... So maybe not at WWDC, but quite soon after?

I don't know, I'm kind of thinking out loud here... does anyone else have any thoughts on this...

hahaha how come I have a feeling that:

Steve: Since you guys took our prototypes, I'm not going to announce any new iPhone this conference.

That's a huge twist lol
not going to happen though, coz Android is catching up....

but still.... Steve must be mad...

That will never happen. Sales are already slowing down as people anticipate the new release. Very few people need a new iPhone now (as in, it's a dire situation and they have to race out and buy one right away). So if they delayed the phone out of pure spite, people will just continue waiting. That's several more months of slow sales, and Apple's not going to do that just to prove a point to Gizmodo and these other people leaking information. Steve Jobs may be petty and vindictive at times, but he's not stupid.

EVT = Engineering Validation Test
DVT = Design Validation Test
PRO = something related to production, I assume

These prototypes have popped up in what seems to be an appropriate order. It's my understanding that EVT comes after DVT, but it's possible they are tested simultaneously. PRO is something I haven't run across before, but I would assume it's a pre-production version as opposed to a full-on prototype. They're probably ramping up production now to meet demand and one of these slipped out.

Like I've said all along. These aren't examples of a new casing for the final product, these are test-bed platforms, designed so that they don't have to produce individual cases for each iteration of the internal hardware. Instead, these test-bed cases are designed to allow easy access, installation, and removal of prototype hardware. It's a common enough practice in every other industry in the world, why does everyone here seem to think that Apple wouldn't do it, too?

WHATS THE SCREEN RESOLUTION!?!?!?

still no ****in word on this...

Wow, rather angry, eh?

To those who think this is a marketing ploy: that would be awesome, but wouldn't Apple be more subtle than this? Like, the one iPhone being 'lost' would be intriguing but now people are thinking "OMG WTF" and probably not believing it.

The seams can't be fixed. It's the easiest way to remove the battery.

I think the reason they keep coming up is that it's very non-Apple-esque. If they are really there to help with battery replacement, why are they so big and visible. This is not typical of Apple, which leads many to believe that they are either going away on the final product, or they are there for some unknown reason at this time. But it's hard to believe (if you follow Apple) that they are 'just there'.

I'm going to be scared to buy this thing. It's got to be the most stolen phone ever and it's not even out yet. Somebody is going to loose a finger over this!

"The above comment is sarcasm"

I can't wait to see what Steve says about these leaks at WWDC

iAryeh Approved

Interesting. I did not scrutinize the Gizmodo teardown photos.

Who knows, it could be a simple design element to delineate engineering samples from the actual production units. Yes, you could put a sticker on the back, and the firmware information (once you dig through the menus) would tell you if it was a production unit or not, but this would be a very simple way in a lab to identify prototype/demo units vs. production units.

With all this coverage and details of the leaked iPhone, the only thing left that would surprise me is that it'll be a World iPhone, GSM and CDMA, and though you'll probably get it subsidized through AT&T, you can finally unlock it through Apple/AT&T and activate it on Sprint or Verizon.

Would be even nicer if it was a 5-band (pentaband?) GSM/UMTS radio to support T-Mobile USA's awkward 1700MHz band...

That's a nice thought, but I don't believe there's a multi-mode, multi-band chip in production (i.e., shipping in quantity right now) that would support all those standards. There have been multi-mode worldphones in the past, but that functionality is limited to voice.

To my knowledge, there is no shipping chip that does multi-mode data. Maybe in a couple of years, and who knows how power efficient the first chips would be.

If I recall correctly, Qualcomm was supposed to ship samples in "mid-2010" of a chip with such capabilities, but I don't know if they are still on schedule to do so. Even then, it would probably be 9-12 months before we saw consumer devices with those parts shipping in quantity.

With more images and phones popping up, this is starting to look staged. I don't know. Maybe the Gizmodo phone was real and then Apple wanted to take the attention off the one case so they leaked stuff on purpose. Maybe Apple is allowing more leaks of this phone because it is in fact the wrong phone. Maybe Apple is introducing more than one new model of phone and this is only one of them. The fact that none of the images have never been asked to be taken down is what confuses me. Usually the smallest picture of a upcoming products is instantly demanded to be taken down, but now all of a sudden Apple just doesn't care. If this is the next iPhone, just tell us when it will be released, how much it will cost and get on with it.

Possible Names:
iPhone 3GV (video, for video chat)
iPhone Sleek
iPhone 4
Possibly just going back to standard with iPhone.

I've never owned an iPhone but am planning on jumping off Tmobile as soon as this bad boy comes out. I'm not a fan of the design, too boxy for me and the seams have to go. I wish they would find a happy medium between the curves of the 3GS and the 4G. But it's going to be a sick phone either way.

Thoughts...

They will probably follow the same business model regarding storage as the iPad...

16GB $199
32GB $299
64GB $399

I also see an increase to 16GB for the minimum RAM of the iPod Touch with the same pricing referenced above.

Another thought, "if/when" the iPhone is introduced to new carriers, demand for the iPod Touch may decline since many iPod Touch owners may have purchased due to their inability or willingness to use AT&T.

Misdirect

As much as I doubt it...

Could Apple be enjoying all this iPhone 4G hype as top cover for something else?

I don't know what, and like I said, I doubt it, but it is a possibility.

These leaks are all very bizarre (prototypes on the black market now?!), but I'm going with you on this one. I'd add to this that if this is, in fact, the new case for the final phone, it's quite possible there are other prototype cases out there that differ.

The iPhone 3Gs is a beautiful design, but with the endless stream of cheap looking, me too iPhone case knock offs, I think this design - whatever it is - is a refreshing improvement. Apple simply needed to come back and reclaim their design.

The 4G phone has a wonderful retro-futurist/industrial edge to it, with a nice dollop of Dieter Rams design on top.

Whatever the final design is, I hope they do away with the 3 year old chrome bezel. Looks lovely in profile, but head on, it's looking a bit dated.

I see you're still in denial.

sim size?

i see the small sim and it's something that tmobile doesn't offer (i just called to make sure) will this new iphone only take a mini sim? if so that leaves a lot of us SOL!
