Some people switch to the OSX platform because it is "better"...period.

Depends on your perception of "better". I don't see why I have to spend 70 bucks buying a CD burner application when Fireburner does it much better on Windows.

Oh, nevermind the fact you can't buy extra burners without having to patch OSX, or how I can't watch DVDs without the damned OS locking out my DVD reader either due to region coding.

At least on Windows all these issues do not exist, and once you get a decent AV installed (like AVG) and take some prudent steps it is all bliss.

New theory here.... 10/24 for new MBPs.

Why? Adobe's MAX Convention in Vegas is 10/23 thru 10/26.... Besides, I just had an Adobe rep tell me that Apple and Adobe will be demonstrating the universal versions of their apps at the show, including pre-release versions of Photoshop CS3 (and other creative suite apps).

Don't know if it means anything, but this could be a possibility for Apple to gain a little more publicity for a new product offering.

Ever wondered why these events always conveniently fall on a Tuesday?

Dell is shipping Core 2 Duo laptops. The College of Education recieved and XPS System with Core 2 Duo T2700.

Tick Tock Apple. Tick Tock.

You can't keep charging people for your Macbook Pro, with your insane profit margins while all the other PC manufacturers have newer technology, and lower prices.

Even though i've ordered my MB (and therefore a mean part of me never wants C2D updates to come out!!!!) i'm still as anxious as before for them to happen (bizzarely  ). Anyway, i found a 'dummies guide' to C2D, Yonah and Santa Rosa that may benefit newbies and could hopefully be an easy referral for some of those endlessly recurring questions:

Uh, you don't need Nero to burn a CD... XP has all the same disc burning capabilities (CD and DVD) that OSX has. Nero is good for some things, just as apps like Toast are good for some things on the Mac, but my advice would be to uninstall the crap software. :D

I'm a firm believer that 90% of PC problems come from the crappy bloated junkware that system vendors include with their systems. When buying a new PC, the very first thing you should do is wipe the hard drive and install a clean copy of Windows without all the third-party BS. Anti-virus software is a good idea - I recommend AVG from Grisoft. I wouldn't use Norton or Macafee or any of the typical ones. They cost too much money and use too many system resources. Not to mention they typically cause more trouble than they're worth. Ad-Aware from lavasoft is great for managing cookies and spyware. I wisth there was a good app like this for OSX. Not that we really have a spyware problem on the Max, but some better management of tracking cookies and security would be welcome.

Valid point but i find the in built tools tend to give alot of excuses, "this cant be done because......" So i use nero which while i still used windows gave me no issues but has apparently become more bloated.

I also use AVG and it seems to work flawlessly thus far.

Sure Apple can. Several people here at proof positive that the benefits of having Apple's current package (at its current price) outweigh the cost of waiting for C2D.

A cynic might also wonder whether any speedy new C2D PC is worth buying without a hefty rebate on Vista.

If merom is just an inter-step to santa rosa i might aswell wait until "spring" . . . could santa rosa be sprung on us in January? They brought the Quad core processor ahead by a quarter (announced in that keynote presentation Multimedia kinda gave us).

Unlikely. Intel's press release says "first half 2007." Most likely March or April, otherwise (I'm just parsing words here) they would have said "first quarter 2007."

Perhaps what we're talking about here are two different platforms? I'm not sure what the difference is...all I know is that I burn CDs all the time. With no patch. No 3rd party app. Data CDs straight from OS Xs Finder (flawlessly) and music CDs from iTunes (flawlessly). Never a problem...ever.

Wow, that businessweek report makes me want to wait further till MWSF!

Windows does that straight from Explorer (which even many OSX users will attest to being the superior file navigator) and Media player too, so what's your point?

Likewise is there an app that burns to multiple burners simultaneously on OSX? Hmmmm! You seem to have an answer to everything, answer that! I am genuinely curious because that is a need that I can't find resolved on mac. Like it or hate it, you can't deny Windows is important for a lot of things. OSX is nice, but it is important for nothing. Hell, it is expendable with its small installed base and small pool of developers.

And as far as the OS locking out a DVD due to region coding I'm clueless. I have never had a problem with it...but I have only used it in the US. But if this is a persistent problem for you...and Windows is better...then perhaps Windows is a better choice for you.

For me...I have to endure it at work. It is unpredictable, unintuitive, and the steps necessary to prevent viruses and spyware are too cumbersome to be worth the time/trouble. I (for me), *hands down*, prefer OS X.

Apple Ads Are Produced and Broadcast In High Definition Too

Also are on Letterman and the CSI shows every day. Apple is providing all the HD broadcast shows with High Definition versions of each ad so they look like part of the show. Love that High Def. ;)

Business week article

That Business Week article says Merom is not capable of 64 bit computing with the current chipset:

"The Merom processor is a new design that can swallow instructions and data in 64-bit bites—helping the computer handle bigger tasks more quickly than earlier chip iterations. But because of limitations in supporting chips, which were designed for older processors, it is limited to 32-bit operation."

If this is truly the case I am FAR less interested in Merom.

Can anyone address/refute this?

That's because it is a corporate machine. The ones we have in our labs are nasty as well... reason being? Celeron with 512mb of memory. For the price a Mac Mini costs you can probably buy two of those crap boxes with change left over!

Well good for you on the DVD situation, here down under where we get our shows a lot later than you guys we actually have to *gasp* buy DVDs from other regions. Thanks to the anal choice of drives used in Macs it has been a source of never ending pain.

Don't get me wrong, for limited tasks I prefer OSX too, but that's the trouble. OSX is only good for limited tasks, I can't play a video game, I can't watch my DVDs without restrictions, I can't run a whole lot of applications. For what it is worth it looks pretty, and spotlight's cool, and there are a couple Mac applications that I came to like, but saying that Windows is irrelevant just because of those reasons is... dumb.

Let's look at it this way, OSX is the reason why we are waiting for this god damned MBP update here on this thread.

If this is true then it sucks too. Someone should get a C2D laptop and install a true 64 bit OS like that 64 bit build of Windows and let us know.

Merom 64-Bitness Not As Important As Other Features

Well the 64-bitness is about the least important reason to want Merom so you have been focusing on the wrong part. AppliedVisual has written some pretty amazing posts about the other reasons that I am far to ignorant to explain. But you should not care about the 64-bitness that much. What about the 4MB L2 Shared Cache? That's what get's me excited. :D

Berylium. Oh, wait... That's heavy and toxic... Hmmmm.

Actually, I'd like to see a titanium or aluminum frame/chassis/skeleton with a carbon fiber shell.. Carbon fiber can be made in or enameled with all sorts of pretty colors. It's still prefer it in black or silver though. OTOH, a nice lime green or burnt-orange would be cool just so others would look at it and gag. :D

Beryllium is very light. Magnesium is heavier than Beryllium iirc. You right about it being nasty toxic.

The businessweek article gives me the impression that SR is coming out in time for MWSF, and Apple will bundle these machines with leopard too.

That gets me more excited than some lousy cache :D

Didn't Steve say Leopard in Spring 07? Or did he say that just to make it seem cool when it is unleashed at MWSF?

MWSF:
*All new MB/MBP with SR
*Leopard
*iTV demonstrated with Leopard integration

That would be pretty awesome.. even without SR.

From the state of the current developer seed of Leopard, I'd say it's very unlikely it will be ready as a finished product at MWSF. I expect all we'll see at MWSF is another MAJOR developer release of Leopard.

If you take a look at the improvements that happened between RC1 and RC2 for Windows Vista, I'd say it is very possible Leopard will ship in January!

I was thinking the same thing, but businessweek thinks otherwise. Do you think their reporters have inside information? (HINT: answer is no.)

4 MB L2 cache does sound cool. But I want a machine that's future-compatible with 64 bit releases of the Mac OS X. Even if I keep waiting I still won't have a machine that can run Leopard at 64 bits, right? That's a serious bummer.

I think Tuesday may be my last Tuesday of waiting, especially given these theories about LATE NOVEMBER. I'll go crazy waiting for my laptop until late November!

I'm kinda stunned no one has mentioned that yeah, Merom is a 64 bit chip, but it can't run at 64 bits until the new chipset (Santa Rosa?)!
