Can anyone tell me what good alternativeslaptops are to get? I'm afraid I can't wait it out too much longer...

If you run out of time and you would still prefer a Mac, then get a refurbished MB or MBP. Some of us already had to go this route....

If you want PC suggestions, I can help there too, but it's a little off topic for this thread. In general, IBM/Lenovo are good, but lack the ultimate in performance and graphics capabilities. HP and Toshiba are nice, but somewhat bulky compared to others and sometimes have QC issues with build quality. Sony - nice but overpriced. Dell - good overall value and support. Alienware - these days it's a Dell XPS in a different shell and overpriced - not real good support. VoodooPC - a Sager with a fancy paint job and overpriced - just get a Sager. Sager is a good choice as are the Asus notebooks. Any questions? ;)

No need for an alternative if you desire the Mac interface/OS. The current line is strong enough for whatever you can throw at it (unless you are a cutting edge gamer). Just opt for a refurb model if you don't want to pay full price. To me, the beauty of a Mac is the quality of build and the operating system. I couldn't wait (didn't want to wait) any longer so I opted for a refurbed Macbook Pro. I'd rather go that route than buy a Windows laptop simply because it had the Core 2 Duo. The magic lies in the software not the hardware. The hardware helps the software do its thing....

Oh yeah! My Macbook Pro refurb shipped the same day I bought it! I ordered it today with 2 day shipping. It is scheduled to be delivered this Friday! Fedex has it enroute already. I can't wait!

I think i'll get the basic MB with student discount by the end of this month if C2D ain't released. If i do get a basic one, will it run Leopard when it comes out next year? I just don't want my machine to not be able to run a new OS when it comes out. Thanks for the advice!

For sure it will. My wife has the Macbook and loves it big time. I believe you will be very happy with it. It performs snappier with an extra gig of RAM though. (1GB + 256MB stock RAM). I installed Bootcamp with Windows XP Pro on my wife's Macbook and it runs smooth as silk. I also run MS Office in Windows mode. No probs.

No need to pair matching RAM modules in the Macbook? 1 GIG in one bank and 256 in the other is cool?

i don't see a mbp update happening this year at all. It will be at mwsf for sure though. We'll just have to wait and see. (Maybe I'm wrong.)

Let's hope the final product justifies the delay

And why would we want to do that?

Because tons of people here are saying that C2D does not support 64 bit code?

The ubuntu would be the perfect test to prove or disprove this.

Sure Apple can. Several people here at proof positive that the benefits of having Apple's current package (at its current price) outweigh the cost of waiting for C2D.

A cynic might also wonder whether any speedy new C2D PC is worth buying without a hefty rebate on Vista.

Wow! You really have been caught up in Jobs' "Reality Distortion Field®", haven't you???

Are you saying that it's "OK" for Apple to screw their consumers by selling previous generation products, while maintaining top-of-the-line prices, simply because their monopoly of the Mac OS allows them to?

And Apple does this without offering their own rebate for their upcoming Leopard OS 10.5, while the "Darth Vader" of the computer world, Micro$oft, offers this bone to their buyers of WinXP on new units now?

I swear, sometimes the things posted by Mac Fanboys in forums makes us Mac users look like such suckers ..........

If Apple waits much longer to release the C2D MBP, I might just buy an Asus A8Js or Sony FE790 instead. I'll pocket $500, wait until Leopard hits in Spring '07, and then buy a C2D Mac Mini built on Santa Rosa. I'd be paying $129 anyway for the Leopard upgrade, so it's basically even $$$... and I'd have a nice notebook AND a Mac to play around with! Hmm...

so you want a centrino mini. Not gonna happen. Apple will adopt parts of santa rosa but will not take the full product. Apple will not use the centrino name. Santa rosa is the fourth generation centrino.

Argh! This is unbearable! Everyday, I almost buy a Macbook Pro with Core Duo, but everytime I end up convincing myself to wait for C2D. What I want right now is a statement from Apple not telling us when the new chips are going to be introduced, but rather what they are doing so this wait is justified.

I also want my iMac G5 Rev. A to break so Apple can give me an intel iMac as a replacement for my lemon ASS computer. :(

Apple may not (and probably won't) call it Centrino, but unless they switch to another chipset manufacturer, it will be the Santa Rosa platform for new designs released after the "Santa Rosa" platform is available.

This will only happen if the public demands it via all the magazines and websites like this one & Macworld, Macaddict, etc...
But, it will never happen. You'd think Steve Jobs was guarding the location of the Holy Grail or something. It is maddening that he won't say...

Also, regarding the Centrino, I believe that is for laptop designation only... Has to do with including wireless and other mobility things I think.

Why do that and kill sales from the ignorant suckers?

Bill Gates didn't get rich educating users to use UNIX, he got to where he is by dumbing down computers to the point where everyone is an "admin". Here's something for you to sleep over.

How so? By saying that people have bought MacBook Pros recently rather than wait indefinitely for a processor upgrade? Believe it or not, some computer users don't need to be on the leading-edge. And Apple (and its shareholders) are making a fortune off of them.

Are you saying that it's "OK" for Apple to screw their consumers by selling previous generation products, while maintaining top-of-the-line prices, simply because their monopoly of the Mac OS allows them to?
How is Apple screwing their customers? Customers always have the option of buying a C2D iMac, not buying a Mac at all, or waiting for price cuts or new releases. It's fallacious to suggest, even with just a single supplier of OSX, that computer buyers don't have plenty of alternatives.

And Apple does this without offering their own rebate for their upcoming Leopard OS 10.5, while the "Darth Vader" of the computer world, Micro$oft, offers this bone to their buyers of WinXP on new units now?
Sarcasm escapes you, clearly.

You know, there IS something to that I believe.
The Core Duo is not all that old for Apple, who is used to running a product for a good long time before changing CPU's and what not.... They are probably making a decent bit of money and feel there is no need to rush on a product this strong. It could be there are no technical difficulties or shortages at all. They are making good money as-is, so why spend lots of money rushing to release the C2D. Just take their time and release in a cost effective manner. One thing is certain, Steve Jobs is a shrewd business man...

Not that they have that many to start with...

Have you ever powered an iMac on portable power?

Oh sure... piss away on prospective buyers.
