Although Intel has not yet shipped the next-generation Centrino platform, Santa Rosa, it is already working on its successor, codenamed 'Montevina'.

The new platform is due to ship in 2008, and will support the new 'Penryn' 45nm processors, which are die shrinks of the current Core 2 Duo CPUs. Penryn will appear in late 2007, and initialize the changeover to 45nm. In 2008, Intel will follow with the 'Nehalem' 45nm processors, the next major architecture revision.

Penryn is supposed to consume 29W of power, compared to the Merom's 35W. It will also introduce SSE 4, which adds 50 new instructions.

The Montevina platform as a whole will include the 'Cantiga' chipset, along with a new wireless module, 'Shiloh'. The new chipset supports a 1,067MHz FSB and probably 800MHz DDR3 RAM. The platform's integrated graphics chip will have 10 pixel shaders and a 475MHz core clock.

Perhaps The Company Astrologer Told Them Wait Until November Because Mercury's Retro

Or we could be dreaming and the delays are due to some marketer waiting to press the trigger...

Then the new MBPs will ship off with more of the same old issues which could have been ironed out in the waited time instead of generating more "snazz"

I dont blame him one bit, my sister just offered to get me a Sony Vaio SZ series featuring a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce Go 7400, express card slot, 120GB HDD, memory reader..the whole shebang for just 2009 and it includes free shipping....amazing deal but i have yet to say yes. I was and still am very tempted to get and maybe install osx x86 on it. My family are looking at me like im crazy for not snapping it up but hey......
Are you daft? It doesn't run OS X. What's up with you all who are willing - heck even considering - to buy a computer that will not run OS X? I don't get it. There is no comparison to the OS X experience if you have to run Windows XP on that hardware.

Are you people going out of your minds or have we been invaded by an Armyh of Windoze Trolls big enough to persuade anyone here that because the processor inside a Mac does not have an Arabac "2" between the words "Core" and "Duo" it must be crap?

You can pick up a perfectly lovely like-new refurbished 1.83GHz Core Duo MacBook for $949 anytime to tide you over if you can't wait a few more weeks or even until January if we must. It will retain a resale value of over $800 after the C2D models come out. But could we please get off the "I could have had a Sony Vaio" routine please? Some of you are reading like you have completely lost your minds over this wait.

I would like to think that we are really here for OS X more than we are here for newer hardware that can't run it. Is that fair?

Is it our fault that Apple choose to bundle their system with inferior hardware?

Besides as switchers we won't care about how superior OSX is, we do not care. What matters is "How will my experience be affected?"

I think there are more trade offs with OSX than I would take with Windows.

I think we should all come to terms with the fact that the C2D Macbook Pro will be released in January along with Leopard. If they made us wait till the middle of October, then they don't mind having us wait 2 1/2 more months.

damn straight homeboy - tell it like it is !

as i get more pessimistic, i wonder why Apple would bother rolling out c2d - why not make a killling in the lead up to xmas with the old model? any loss in sales will be made up for in keeping the old box. why risk the negitive reports re c2d? what if it is even hotter than the last chip?

Inferior GPU's are just that and not having any options to get away from them im sure has ran off many a customer. I wonder how many GMA950s Foxconn still has to throw into the new Macbook? Apple has a love affair with the cheapist graphics it can buy and even Powermac a $2500 machine comes with what is a $75 card(retail). I still would like to hear just what a GMA950 costs Apple? $1, maybe $5 I wouldnt go much higher.:(

That's a joke...right?

Obsolete hardware priced at today's top of the range prices
Limited software compatibility
No games
Ridiculous GPUs even in the top of the end Mac Pro
Spastic desktops like the iMacs

Need I say more?

Mind you, I know more than enough to run my Windows boxes *muah* perfectly, OSX gives me absolutely ZERO in that regard.

It is bloody FREE. It comes free with the chipset. GMA950 comes with PC mainboards that costs around $20. That is HOW cheap it is.

I'm starting to consider buying a mini for now and just get a Macbook Pro in January (after MacWorld).

Or just wait and not buy anything now (but that's a lot harder to do :)).

It seems to me you don't even need the Macbook Pro, at all.

One of the main things that puts me off getting a Mac is paying premium prices and getting bargain-basement GPUs. It's an utter joke. I'm hoping the new MacBook Pros get decent GPUs and then I'll get one when Leopard's released. If not I'll get a VAIO or something.

Sure I don't need one.

But I planned to buy a new laptop in September (I buy a new one every two years). Since the company I work for is starting to make OSX software, it would be nice to have one that can run OSX and Windows (as opposed to just Windows now). And I prefer the 15" screen over the 13" of the Macbook.

Not needing one makes the wait a little bit easier, wanting one makes it a lot more difficult :)

As much as I hate Apple's GPU offerings I hate Sony more for their anti-consumer tactics. Just get a refurb MBP, you'd be better off for it.

The big irony is even my Chinese friends (who are Chinese nationals) comment on how shoddily built Vaios are amongst laptops, and even prefer a 9000RMB laptop (with "Merom 2Ghz Core 2 Duo" no less!), 120GB hard drive, and DL DVD burner over the Vaios.

They relented that the manufacturer offering that price is a real cheap brand even in China, but hey, next time you shell out USD$2000 on a MBP, think about how much it really costs.

Seems like you got nothing to say either eh? Why, if your heart is so overflowing with OSX love and you are so happily posting on here with a recently released MBP why not share some of your wisdom with us?

Oh right, I was joking there, there is no updated MBP. It is still selling at the same price and same specifications as 5 months ago... a good portion of an epoch in computer terms.

i went to local not-apple apple store, they havent had Macbook Pro stock for 3 weeks, they think / know it will be will be within 2 weeks

hi all quick question and cause i dun think that it is worth making a thread about it...and seeing that u guys discuss other stuff around here too i would like to know whether the macbook(not pro) can input multiple keys(letters in keyboard)....

for example, my friend's hp laptop cant read 3 keys at once, say 'a', 's' and 'd', and thus as some games require the pressing of these 3 buttons and there will be an error when pressing all 3, thus making that game unplayable....so my question is will the macbook be like this??

thx

My current PB G4 will accept many multiple simultaneous key presses (I tested up to 8) at once, I just tested that out in the terminal. I don't see any reason why the newer MBs wouldn't do the same.
